This is a fantastic start to this series. I struggle with trying to do too much or convince myself that something is worth it when it really probably isn’t. So seeing someone who’s a former professional, who also loves to go above and beyond unintentionally; create a series about how to find a potential subject, flip it, use the money to buy another one? I love this. Also the long videos? Love those too. I’m probably one in a few hundred thousand who watch KZbin on their tv. But I love the long videos for this.

Hey Jared!! I know you will probably not see this comment, but I wanted to say love this content. Also, do not sell yourself short on flips like this. I personally would pay a little MORE if I knew all the stuff you replaced mechanically as the 'right thing to do' while having it look not quite a pretty. I might be in the minority but the mechanical side of things is MUCH more important to me than how it looks. Especially if you not only detailed all the stuff you fixed and found wrong along the way, but also informed me you had a mini series on YT working on and fixing the vehicle I was about to purchase. As I mentioned, I could be in the minority here and its likely your everyday person may not care as much, but as a car guy, this info and your integrity would defiantly warrant more money on the sale rather than less because cosmetic things couldn't be squeezed into the budge. You are the man! Keep it up! (also Dwayne, you rock as well!!!)

I cross reference parts off Rockauto to Amazon to get the best prices. The key is being able to have the time to wait on parts and knowing when to stop is the key to a decent flip.

I always check for deals with Amazon Warehouse... The "used" condition is most often brand new, but returned by someone, and can save you a lot of money!

I’ll never use rockauto I’m sorry they put cheap parts in the box and still charged me to ship back parts they sent me incorrectly then they charged me to ship it back. I will Never use them. Amazon is way easier.

I just bought an old 4runner like this one last month, just last thursday I heard a clunk, the rear trailing arm mount on the passenger side ripped off from the frame due to the "previous owners fix". My guess is that it somehow got cracked at one point, so they welded it back on, but all their welds snapped and left me with a big hole in my frame now. But at least its not too rusty!

I bought a 1997 Celica Gt Convertible from an estate sale for $1200. Had 230,000 miles but runs great. Carried out a bunch of work on it and amazed at how much the parts spend adds up. Done as much as was necessary to make it safe and pass inspection, including new struts, battery, suspension parts, one axle, timing belt/water pump, parking brake cables, oil pump cam and crank seals, valve cover gasket, transmission gasket and filter, spark plugs and wires, auxiliary belts, fuel pump, minor body work and a few other bits. Probably spent around $2000 on parts but I now have car that runs and drives great.

In the last year, plus a little, I've bought and sold two Toyota pickups (88 & 99) and one 88 Isuzu Trooper. I now have a 2002 Sequoia that has been heavily modified and I am close to through with it. I'm a retired IT guy that has never been a mechanic and hasn't worked on cars since I was young and broke. The older Toyota and the Trooper were about break-even projects, but the 1st gen Tacoma did real well. The Sequoia was worse than I thought it was, but the seller seemed like a good guy that was real knowledgeable and it turned out he was full of bull. I'll get my money back when I sell it, but all of these have been about learning and keeping this old guy busy. I don't count my labor since I'm retired and enjoying myself. Great series, I've enjoyed it a lot.

Installing the rear axle seal is not as simple as you think in these 3rd gens. You must make sure the seal is riding right in the center of the retainer sleeve on the ABS tone ring. Watch Timmy the tool mans rear axle job, where he explain the sharpie test. I failed once and then did it again while following his video. Also, don't forget the front lower ball joints (BUY OEM lasts 200+ K miles, aftermarket just 20K miles)

If you want to maximize resale value on a 3rd Gen 4 Runner, you should add an aftermarket welded bumper and roof rack-double the asking/selling price!

Nice job! Looking forward to this series. A great upgrade for this truck is the "Tundra Brake Upgrade". You buy the calipers and rotors for a 2005 Tundra and it eliminates the rotor warping issue that happens in these (at least in mountain regions), it also greatly increases the stopping performance. I bought one with all the service history and rotors had been replaced 4 times and needed replaced again. When purchasing it as a kit, the total cost can be as low as $300.

I was going to say the same. Once he bought both calipers and pads, with just the cost of new discs he could have put in a much better braking system that won't result in warped calipers all the time.

Man, that bleeder being on bottom got me good the first time I ran across it. Had a 2000s Ranger come into the shop I was working at. Customer and his "mechanic" neighbor put all new brakes on it. They replaced EVERYTHING front to rear including rusty lines, all except for the abs box. Couldn't get good pedal. I started pressure bleeding it, had leaks at about every connection. Tightened everything, bled them all, still no pedal. Went ahead and pulled the Master thinking maybe they didn't bench bleed it. Bench bled and reinstalled, still no pedal. Pulled the drums to find the new adjusters were all the way in. Adjusted them out to drag just a bit, still no pedal. Hooked up the scanner and ran the abs bleed, still no pedal. Getting aggravated, went to bleed them one more time and as I'm watching fluid come thru the hose on one of the calipers it just hit me. Looked over at the other caliper and sure enough both bleeders were on bottom. Swapped sides, bled the fronts real quick and it was good. Felt like an idiot. LOL

That was a good overview on the rear brakes. I have a Tacoma, and use the parking brake every time. Even so, anytime I pull the drums to check the shoes, I have to manually move the adjuster a few clicks.

Make sure you do the lower ball joints as well. Big problem with those failing and the entire front suspension falls apart.

Jared, this would be a good candidate for a scuff job on the whole body, a little bit of bodywork, and one of those Rustoleum 3x mega can paint jobs. Hit it with some clear with the same product. I bet you it would turn out pretty nice

My experience As a toyota tech and working on these since the 80s these 4runners always do better with Toyota Parts especially the engine the system is sensitive and mostly don't like aftermarket sensors good video

With those 3rd gen 4runners, you have to be sure to check those lower ball joints, they catastrophically fail with virtually no warning, almost always worth just swapping them out if you dont know mileage on them

I lost my right front wheel and all the suspension components when my 99 4runner ball joint failed , the entire assembly went past me and almost hit a car …..it did a lot of damage, it destroyed the steering rack on its way out too 🤪😳 Now I tell everyone who has these to inspect and replace ball joints if need be , on 3rd gen 4Runners and tacomas!

Jiggle valve works better at the 6pm position instead of the 12 o'clock position for some reason makes 6 to 10 degrees cooler on Temps with jiggle valve down on thermostat

I have a couple local junkyards that will install windshields if they have them in the yard. When I flipped cars I gave them a lot of business since I could have a windshield installed for 50-75 dollars. My personal cars have free glass replacement through my insurance which has more than paid for itself.

The "pink" plastidip probably used to be red... maybe. Using old factory parts is 100% a thing I try to do when I can. I'm doing blazers right now for me and my dad. We have 2 more trucks for parts. The parts trucks paid for themselves 2x already, and it was good 90,000 mile crashed truck that provided the most so far. fuel pump, wheel bearings, ball joints, power steering pump, alternator, seats, 4x4 switch, tires, factory zr2 posi rear end, miscellaneous sensors and wiring.....its been good to us. If your going to build 2 rigs, get a 3rd crashed low mileage parts car. It will save your wallet

Sometimes there are bleeder ports on each side (up/down)calipers as they produce them to work for both sides. I couldn’t tell if those had that option. Perhaps the one you bought as a jobber part has that feature and can save some money. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to see what you get for profit.

Only other thing I would check for are seized parking brake levers in the backing plates. Common to seize when pulling on the cable going across the rear axle housing. As a Lexus tech, I normally recommend replacing the levers and "rebuilding" them(we had made a "kit" in the dealer parts catalog). If you wanted to, you could pull them out, free them up, then put lubricant(I would put anti seize on the new levers when i sold the kit)to keep them from seizing.

i never ship through fedex, but i ordered rotors & pads for my wife's pathfinder off amazon. The sender sent them in two different packages, and the pads arrived 3 days later than the rotors. I looked at the rotors first, realized the pads were still on the way, and just remember thinking the seller must have lost money on that transaction.
