Zuko's actor, Dallas Liu, probably has the most martial arts experience since he had been competing since he was a child (from age 5). The only other actor with experience would be Sokka's Ian Ousley (from age 9), but he doesn't get to showcase it much since Sokka is a non-bender. Hence why Zuko seems to look more natural and skilled with the fight choreography than the others (the main gang had a two month bootcamp to learn all four martial arts before filming, so Aang and Katara's actors are still fairly new at it). Hopefully going into the next season, they will have some more time to hone their skills.

Like someone said, this is basically a way to spread the IP through groups of people that either never picked up cartoons or never got to see said IP. The medium does work tho, at this point in time Live Action in terms of technology has everything to make it work, the One Piece LA was actually successful as an adaptation. The big problem is that IPs are bought left and right and given to teams that have no interest in respecting the original source material. Cause let's think about it, Death note and Bebop should have been super easy to adapt, the big problem was the writing

which is sad because it was the easiest job in the world. they already had more screen time to tell the stories of the first season than the original animated show had. and they had even more time after ignoring like 3 or 4 episodes worth of scenes and stories. they had already succeded at the hardest part which was having money and the proper CGI people. yet these ''professional'' writers and directors in charge did a far inferior show at casting actors and adapting a fucking animated series than what the fans would have been able to make had they been given the same money and resourses. just like there is far better fanmade videos on youtube of Halo and Star Wars than what we got from the Halo Show and the Star Wars Sequels. these idiots could not even have the common sense of using the original music rather thanm composing a generic and forgetable soundtrack which used the original music only here and there for a few seconds. at least Shyamalan had the excuse of having to adapt an entire season in a movie.

@587DeathKing yes no crap the legend of korra we knew it was going to be a new avatar and a new adventure but like we saw korra character wasn't that great threw out the series and the new team avatar is real bad compared to the original team avatar. Like we saw with the previous avatars like aang and roku they had teachers who helped them bend and build friendships with them korra didn't have that. Sure she was forced locked away from the world but like we saw in book 2 she was acting like a big D she was literally trusting her sus uncle over her father,mother and tenzin plus tons more I can say about her character bit I don't feel like typing all that. But one more thing korra is supposed to be the strongest avatar but she gets her butt beat alot like we saw when she faced the dark avatar she'd had no reason to lose that fight she'd had years of experience of 3 of her elements and she lost to a dark avatar only using water like why she never stayed in the avatar state and win and her kurvira fight sure she was still mentally ill but the fact she didn't land a single blow on her is beyond me.

What blood bending death is Joey talking about @13:00? Not a SINGLE person in the original series dies from blood bending....It's savage as hell what Katara does to the Southern Raiders captain, but he lived. Same with the actual soldier she was looking for. I think he got a couple wires crossed lol.

I already hate how the studio writers and the actor who played Sokka agreed to "tone down Sokka's sexism." 1. The reason why Sokka was sexist towards his sister Katara and the Kiyoshi warriors was because he wanted to protect her, just like how Sokka and Katara's father went off to fight. 2. Sexism was the whole reason that Katara and Sokka's Grandmother fled down to the southern water tribe, because they didn't want Katara to grow up in an environment where she was treated as being only good for healing and not being a seen as a true water bender. 3. The biggest part of Sokka's character development was the fact that he got his ass handed to him by the Kiyoshi warriors and through that learned to be more humble, especially when Toph then joined the group Sokka took on the role of care taker sometimes for Toph. It's this sort of blatant disregard for the source material and character motivations that makes watching live adaptations of anything hard to watch.

The reason I dont enjoy most "Live-Action adaptations" is usually because it feels unnecessary. - Like, why do we need a Live-Action version of something that is already perfect in its original form. - A Live-Action adaption would have to either improve or expand (in a good way) on the source material, but it usually falls flat for me due to the limitations and time constraints. - But that's just my personal feeling of course!

To have all air nomads die in one day, at one festival, is such a stretch. In the OG, the Fire nation knew that the next avatar was an air nomad, so they went around the world hunting and killing air nomads. Drawing parallel from the story of king Herod’s decree to kill all infant boys, to get rid of the prophecised king of the Jews.

It ruins aang setup miserably when he discovers what happened to his people, he is just told this by some women. They could have teased the intro and left the audiance on a cliff and then showed Gyatso battling the fire nation juxtaposed with aang finding his body. cutting into his battle and aangs sorrow, with his end coming when aang goes into the avatar state. Also missing the context Katara encouraging aang they are his family now and they will be with him until the end. Which never happens here. They also completely stripped zuko of his arc of resentment and anger towards everyone after being stripped of his honor and titles, and home. And sent off on an impossible mission. He is a hardened resentful person but determined to make up for it. That arc is watered down. Also him fighting his father and BEATING his father in a duel is a mess. Because he refuses to fight his father and his father attacks him anyway, showing how evil that character really is. AND the pay off when he meets his father again is now gone. Because he already beat him in the first season... The writers don't believe the original story can hold an adult audience so they are shoveling everything out at face value no setups no payoffs. Just dialog.

Zuko and Uncle Iroh are easily the best part of the new show. Action scenes look great. The acting from the main three actors seem stiff at times, with the sokka actor easily being the best among them. The costumes seem too "clean" and that appleis to the earth kingdom city they visit too. The story also seems to suffer at times because they're camming too much plot into one episode. But I guess that just what happens in adaptations.

Here’s the thing that both live action remakes miss. Good kids’ shows are targeted to kids, but have a mix of moments sprinkled in to please the adults. Avatar is an adult show, that has things sprinkled in to please the kids. Sure, they don’t have anything that makes unwatchable for kids (until we get to Korra) - but the themes, lore, writing, and most important DIALOGUE are all very mature. The writers never wanted to make a kids show. They had a story they wanted to tell. There isn’t a single major moment that was “for the kids” - so when adaptations come out of the gate saying “we’re adapting a children’s tv show” they’ve already failed on a fundamental level. Even Mark Hamill thought that the show was going to flop “because it was too smart.” So when the people making adaptations try to make it smarter, or more mature, or more dramatic, it winds up doing the opposite.
@Soy_boi

I definitely feel like your expectations are completely based on the movie. The reason people are mad isn’t because it is as bad as the movie, but because they basically marketed it as a better version for the modern age, that they got rid of all the “controversial” parts of the old show. But in doing so, they missed the heart of what the show was trying to say and who the characters are. They are not allowed to make mistakes or be real people. The show itself is fine, a solid 6/10, but to say it is an improved version of the original is just insulting, as the original is a masterpiece.

In an attempt to "remove sexism" they somehow became more sexist. The original show never made Sokka's sexism out to be a good thing. It was always presented as a flaw of his that he had to overcome. Instead, we didn't get to see him humble himself in front of the Kyoshi Warriors and /earn/ Suki's respect and admiration. Instead we get.. Suki lusting after him because he's a foreign boy? And her entire character is just taken away, and her only purpose now is to build up Sokka's character. It's remarkably sexist tbh.. Not to mention how the removal of Sokka's sexist remarks to Katara in their opening scenes means we don't get to see Katara's angry unconscious water bending crack open Aang's icecube. Which.. leads into how they neutered the fuck out of Katara and make her boring character. Where did all her emotions go? Are the writers afraid to show an emotional woman? Sigh, it had so much potential. The visuals are stunning. The costumes were great for the most part. The sets were amazing. But they really missed the mark with the character development that makes the show so beloved.
@TheeShifty

Yeah.. They made some *wild* changes. I agree they made it way more sexist than the OG. They changed another female char too and I'm wondering if its because of the OG show people had an issue with a thing that happened. I don't wanna say too much cause i don't wanna spoil it for those who haven't finished the Netflix one. While i don't "hate" the show and will probably watch it again just to see if i misses things, it's just... Not it? Smashing the Omashu, jet, and Northern air temple episodes into one? How they changed Bumi.. They took away all of kataras personality. They also didn't have some of the best quotes. "You rise with the moon, i rise with the sun" BITCH WHY WASN'T THAT ADDED?! I'll give em credit, they did sprinkle in some little.. Easter eggs? Mentioning the great divide episode and riding Elephant Koi. They had the right music. I was making jokes about it and said.. Wonder how they'll ruin Toph? Will she not be blind? Or a badass? Will they take away the blind bandit scene? But.. I'm still disappointed. I understand why the creators left. Also why the fuck does it seem like they made it so Aang could fly? And kinda weird comment from Suki about being stronger than benders.. Are they trynn set up for Korra lmao?

As far as an live action it was ok. The problem lies with every mini series currently that makes the show suffer. It tries to do to much when most of the elements of the story need time. Especially when there is a continuance of telling the audience full of exposition. It just felt like the show runners were too proud 9f the realism and changes and forgot what the audience loved with the original series. The show just felt like Dragonball Z Kai. @@skull1161 Just so you know, the whole thing of it being mismanaged by nick isn't a rumor. It's fact. The show runners were originally only given one season, so they made it somewhat self contained. But then, when that went well, nick gave them a second season, so they had to rush to put together the story of it properly, before they were then given two more. And the thing that really solidifies the mismanagement is the fact that nearing the end of season 4, nick not only changed the airing schedule, but then also pulled it from TV airing and made it only air online. Say what you want about the overall writing of the show, but the showrunners can't really do anything about an issue with their production, if the upper management just doesn't let them.

50% of the original first season was omited. and 65% of what was not omited was heavily modified for no reason. like there was no point from a time contraint nor story-telling point of view. they had far more screen time to perfectly adapt and expand the original season. almost all of the music was new and generic, with them hardly using for a few seconds the iconic songs from the animated show. they added stuff from future seasons, comics and novels that literaly had no place being there. they invented new characters while erasing the original ones. they made the earth king and other earth people dress like as if they were freking arabs or persians. half of the cast was terribly cast, specialy the girls, with Suki and the bounty hunter being the only good ones, even though the bounty hunter looked 10 to 15 older than what she looked in the animated show. they erased sokka's sexism, using woke reasons as an excuse, yet they kept Pakku the same, allowing him to actualy grow as a character, but not Sokka. all this while inventing that Sokka had an existensial crisis and believed his father was disappointed in him, when none of that happened in the show. they made Katara a Mary Sue who mastered Waterbending on her own without any difficulty nor the teachins of Pakku. they wasted Roku, made him an angry idiot and a clown rather than the reserved old wise man he was in the show. aang spent half the show monologuing about the power of friendhip or about his emotional issues, when in the animated show he easily conveyed everything he thought or felt with just a few lines of natural dialogue. this ''adaptation'' had big budget and good CGI, but no respect for the source material, its creators (who abandoned the project), and the fandom. it was almost as bad an adaptation as the Game of Thrones show. meaning that the only people who like it are either ignorant about what was taken from them, are are just not fans of the franchise. just passive consumers. casuals who are happy as long as there is action and good cgi.

I agree about all the points from the perspective of having watched the first two episodes, the music was really glaring especially, why would they use the leitmotif of the fire nation with Zuko's ship and then proceed to not use any other piece of music, it makes no sense. Katara learning waterbending so fast from like one statement Aang made was also extremely eyebrow raising, I want to watch the rest but at the same time I know I'll only continue to be disappointed.

A big part of Aang's character was that he needed to learn to balance his normal carefree kid self with his duty as the Avatar. Not in the Netflix show. Sokka was a country bumpkin who has all of his worldviews challenged and changes for the better as he matures and sees the wider world. Not in the Netflix show. Katara is the glue that holds the gang together. Through the toughest times, she's there with an unrelenting force of will and need to help others. This is how she mastered waterbending and, eventually, faced her own darker emotions. NOT IN THE NETFLIX SHOW.

It does feel rushed because of the length of the episodes, ironically. Even in places where they keep the pacing the same as in the original, it doesn't work cause it's not the same. The original episodes are 20 minutes each, each with their own tension arc and conclusion at the end. And the original episodes mostly start and end with the gaang camping or flying away on Appa, which helps in showing the passage of time. Here, we put three of those episodes into one, the plots and tension arcs are all over the place and the end of an episode sometimes just feels like returning to your quest givers collecting EXP for 3 or 4 completed quests at once. This is also why it felt very off to me that Sokka made out with Suki, was devastated he had to leave and then 2 days later fell heads over heals for Yue for no reason. It just felt like it happened way too quickly cause even if there's maybe the same amount of runtime between Suki and Yue from original to adaptation, it does feel like only a couple of days passed in the adaptation since that happened only 4 episodes ago (no matter their length) while in the original there were probably like 15+ episodes between him crushing on both girls. It doesn't help that they cut most of the gaang just going to random small villages, seeing them go to sleep and all that, cause it really just doesn't feel like more than maybe 3 days passed in this live action. They need to give the plot more room to breathe, honestly. We need more non entirely plot driven scenes, more bonding of the characters, more time passing. It's so weird but we barely saw Aang, Sokka and Katara bond at all, they seemingly barely spent any time together. Even in episodes when I thought they made certain changes to show them spend time and grow closer, they immediately just split them up again and sent each one on their own journey to backstory station.

i actually did watch the movie after i was done with the show OMG i could NOT make it past 30 minutes. there's less exposition but the Sokka actor just looks like he was in Twilight all over again and i couldn't even take Zuko seriously, and Zuko is my all time favorite actor. No hate to Dev Patel obviously, it was a writing and directing issue. but seriously seeing the movie again just made me have more appreciation for the show LOL
