There is a quote, "you are reading this, that means you are alive, be thankful for that."

I'm so happy your relationship with your wife got closer.. you married the right woman. I was a professional bicycle mechanic for half a decade and we always said that if you want to test your relationship, ride a tandem bicycle together. Because wherever your relationship is going, on a tandem, it'll go there faster. It turns out you can say the same thing with severe traffic injuries. My now ex-boyfriend (spoilers) Reacted terribly to my hospitalization and injuries. He showed up the first couple days, being caring, bringing me stuff... or so he thought, because i don't know if you know but sitting in a chair silently on your phone with your broken girlfriend in the hospital isn't particularly the epitome of providing comfort in company. Then in the following days he just disappeared. I asked him to bring me stuff from the house and to come over and give me company and he had started complaining about how it was too much to ask. He didn't come to see me all that often, and when he did he just sat in silence. No flowers, no company aside from physical presence. He was slacking off on his college prior to my accident and then immediately used my accident as an excuse to drop out without even trying to make it work. I even invited him to come do his schoolwork at the hospital and i would help him. Of course he didn't, and goodness k ows he didn't do any schoolwork while he was at home. But every other day it seems he was on the phone with his friends his family his school saying "my girlfriend got hit so i can't _____" making it sound like he was dedicating his every minute to my care. Like i was just such a noble burden on him. It was bullshit, he didn't even bring me flowers. He told me he cleaned the house in preparation for me to come home, turns out my brother came over and did it, while he was playing video games. I was stuck inside for months. Incapable of going out on my own. I pleaded with this man to take me outside. Take me to do something. Play a fucking card game with me for the love of god anything other than being stuck on the couch doom scrolling netflix. He only took me outside ONCE. And bitched the whole time about how outside 'just wasn't his thing' I thought i was gonna marry that man. And it turns out i thought wrong. Very very very wrong. I slept in the hospital day in and day out for two weeks for my best friend when she was hit. I took care of communicating in her stead, started a gofundme, got her hospital bills paid and called her every other day to keep her company once she was out. I would do it again for anyone that deserves me. I don't expect the exact same in return, because i know that sleeping day in and day out in a hospital isn't financially feasible for most people. But visiting is. And i sure as hell shouldn't ever hear anyone complaining about having to be there for me in crisis. Fuck. That. So i guess i have a lot to be grateful for. I may have lost a boyfriend, but i dodged a bullet and gained some self respect. Know who you surround yourself with. Choose wisely. Ride a tandem bike with them.

Almost dying made him value more the the things that really didn't. Trauma I feel can do the reverse as well. He could have started to hate cars as a result of the incident. Understand.
