As you may recall, I'm now living in the country of Panama. I'm a permanent resident here, and still a US citizen. I'm visiting the US soon for about 8 days. I got a travel insurance company that is costing me $150 for 2 of us for up to $250K of emergency coverage.

Great video! I've heard good things about safetywing. I'm thinking about going that route as well when we slow travel. We found that credit cards are best for other insurance options like rental insurance or cancellations due to unforeseen issues.

Credit cards are definitely good for that type of coverage, and we are happy so far with our decision to get additional coverage with safety wing!

Can't underscore the need for travel medical insurance. Used it in Costa Rica for an 11-day hospital stay and avoided a monstrous bill. My neighbor was in hospital for a similar time and condition - without insurance. His bill was +$120k USD and you have to pay before you leave. Fortunately for him, he has very good means and was able to suck it up. When I saw him down there shortly afterwards, I learned he still had no medical coverage. He said it was too expensive. Trip over the dollars to pick up the nickels I suppose.

Wow!!! Thank goodness you had the coverage, I can't even imagine that sort of hospital bill! ....also can't believe your neighbour still has no coverage after going through that once before!

Thank you!! We are feeling better all the time! For now, we will stick with this insurance. If we end up in Brazil longterm we may look.for private coverage there!

Your credit card links show cards I thought only available in US. Are all of these easily available to Canadians?

I wouldn't say easily available, but it is possible to get these cards. We have the ones listed and do recommend them. Unfortunately, for Canadians, we are quite limited for credit card options. We keep only two. You can find more here: www.firewego.com/resources

That's true. Even IHG, if you don't have the credit card, you could buy points (once they have a promotion where you get a 100% bonus). It ends up being a good option. Unfortunately, in order to have the benefits of a platinum member, the easiest way would be holding the credit card.
