Tickets are validated to cancel them in a machine on each platform allowing flexibility. If you have a unvalidated ticket there are costy fines issued by staff on the trains. If you choose the freccarosa express which are less frequent these are for that train only and dont need validation

A friend did this journey, the train broke down and was severely delayed. She would certainly have missed the ship by 90 minutes but very luckily didn’t because there was an accident/fire on the motorway that held up the ship excursion coaches which had to divert. She got back with minutes to spare. Doing a distance like this, I would rather book a shop excursion and have the security of knowing the ship will wait rather than the massive additional cost of getting to the next port. Basically the train tickets it is only valid on board the train and you do not need it to get out of the station. The subway ticket you need to insert into the machine to open the gate when you go in and out of the metro station.

How long would you recommend planning for total trip time from Rome to Civitavecchia? I am trying to plan backwards so we can make sure we are back at the port on time. If we want to arrive back at the ship between 6:30pm and 7pm (7:30 all aboard time), what time would we need to be leaving the colosseum to get to Roma Termini get the train, (I know exact travel time depends on which train) and then catch the shuttle and get back to the ship? (Is there always a shuttle waiting or would we possibly have to wait for one?) Our plan is to do the colosseum tour last (if we can get tickets) so that we finish there and head straight back to the train, so I need to play what time entry I want to try for.

Hello Nancy, to be safe we would recommend 2 hours just in case the train has a delay. Usually those local trains are pretty punctual but you never know.

Hello there, the shuttle is very easy to find it is just outside the station. The train from the airport arrives at Termini station. Buying the tickets on line is the same price, it is just more convenient to buy them online

Hi again! I was able to purchase tickets to the Colosseo for our port day at Civitavecchia. My concern is we dock at 6:45am and our arrival time for the Colosseo is 10:30am. Do we exit Roma Termini as well from the train station? Also, because we are arriving June 26th, I thought I'd purchase train tickets on the Treinitalia App you recommended but it asks for specific times to board (and we don't know what time we'll actually be able to make it to the train station). Hello there, you are right if you try to do a search for 9am it will give you only afternoon trains. It might be a weird bug on their website. I was able to see morning train if I enter the time for 00:30 (12:30 am) all the morning trains become visible. Very strange

My question is are the trains from the airport to Civitavecchia easy to board with luggage? Do you just walk on or do you have to climb stairs to board? The trains from the airport to Termini and from Termini to Civitavecchia have a few steps to climb each. If you buy a ticket to a destination but you get off sooner it is perfectly fine

Hello Rachel thank you for your message. We were not able to find a timetable for the shuttle but when we were there last November there was a few of them waiting at the port. You can find some more information on this page: civitavecchia.portmobility.it/en/shuttles Regarding the train you can change the ticket before the train departure. In fact we did change our as well. Usually strikes are planned a few days in advance, at the moment we haven't heard of any strikes anytime soon.

Hi, if you buy a train ticket using the app, do you need to have it printed and validated before boarding just like if you have physical tickets, or you can just show the ticket in the app?

The trenitalia app is regionally resticted for foreign download. Tickets by pdf or paer are also a option. They dont need to be printed but rely on your phone data and battery of course

Hello there, last time we went they did not accept credit cards but you can use credit card to buy the ticket on line. You can change your ticket prior departure on line or at the station.
