Those are the happiest and luckiest doggies! I trained service animals for the handicapped, but I knew canine officers and saw their training methods. It's fascinating, and they do it all for their reward of a few minutes of play time with their person. Yay!

Happened to me driving a motorhome from Turkey into Bulgaria, apparently a popular drugs route. The vehicle was X-rayed in a huge hangar, customs officials then asked me "you have narcotics?" I was getting worried in case something had or was about to be planted. Then the sniffer dogs came out, paid special attention to beneath a rear bench seat in which I had stored several sacks of dog food and treats! Must have looked like sacks of drugs on the X-ray images. We were travelling with our 3 mini poodles. Quite amusing now looking back but I was relieved to be waved on my way.

I thought the exact same thing. I guess it sometimes takes quite a while for the clearance to come through from Royal Mail and it doesn't make sense to have the dog wait around while that happens. They do seem to wait on confirmation when it comes to checking passangers and lorries though as they can confirm that a lot quicker.

There is no expectation they will get everything right. Second, there was another episode of this exact same show where it was explained that after they have confirmed the existence of contraband, they hide the contraband again, let the dog sniff for it, and then reward them.

I'm confused about several things, even though I watch this show often. It seems I can't travel to UK, just for traveling to other countries, and pack my USA cigarettes that are way cheaper. If I'm traveling, I dont want to pay the insane price for cigarettes outside the USA. This is one reason I haven't traveled to Europe.

It’s not that you can’t bring any into the country. Typically you can bring in a set amount that varies based on which country you’re trying to enter, and occasionally, which country you’re arriving from. The cigarettes are more expensive due to customs duties and other taxes. Not letting you circumvent the paying of taxes has and will always be the point of any country’s customs force.

The main issue is not declaring the cigarettes that are over the prescribed amount, to avoid paying the VAT. They normally don’t show it, but most of these people go through the “Nothing To Declare” lane before they’re redirected to Customs. We can buy from duty free entering Canada but have to claim coming back home, and pay the additional taxes. I can bring any amount INTO Canada though, because I'm not circumventing taxes, I just don't want to pay their high cigarette tax. What you're saying amounts to, I can't bring lots of clothes when traveling, so I am forced to buy expensive clothes from the country I'm entering. Talk about a socialist government!!
