A couple caught with three kilos of cocaine in their hand luggage claim they have been set up by Customs. In Manchester, bags belonging to a celebrity chef give massive readings for cocaine. The man eventually confesses that he's carrying cocaine in his pants.
In Gatwick and Bristol Airports in England customs agents check baggage and travellers to uphold allowances and prevent illicit activity and substances from entering the UK.

They are super cute. What I don't get is why that guy risked so much for bringing in such a tiny amount of cocaine? Like, okay, I don't know anything about cocaine, but it seems to me that that was just for personal use, he wasn't selling it or anything. So why take the risk?? Not that I'm saying it's okay to use it. It's not. But, like, I get why smugglers and dealers risk getting caught, it's cause they're gonna make a bunch of money. But that guy, he wasn't gonna make money, seems like it was just a bit for his personal use, so.... ....so why take that risk? He had everything to lose, and nothing to gain.

Because most of the drugs go unnoticed all the time. The customs are just guessing who to stop and who to ignore. The sniffer dogs are their main resource but not used 24/7 and all around the airports. It is easy to bring drugs or anything else in. By the way, even sniffer dogs are useless as they are wrong 75 % of the time, yet any indication from the dog gives these bullies the right to detain and strip search you.

Even in the U.S. an accused defendant who waits for months or years before bringing forth an alibi or "innocent explanation" that he knew about and could very easily have presented to investigators much earlier will have made the last-minute story seem a bit like a desperate lie to a reasonable judge or jury, thus harming the defendant's defense. Sort of agree. Wouldn’t ruin someone’s life over a first smuggling, but the amount of crime, broken families, extra hospital bills, jail from theft to support habits, etc. from drugs is huge - it is not a “victimless” crime. The smugglers don’t care if the drugs they carry cost others their lives.

To the OP: Well, not entirely true. His 'life' in Thailand is, more than likely, over. Not sure how he is going to answer the local immigration and customs questionnaire where it asks if you've ever been arrested. Of course the follow-up to a 'yes' response is, on what charge? Unlike the UK, in Thailand, the possession of any quantity (no matter how small) of a Category II drug (which includes cocaine) will earn the offender a 5 million baht fine (over GBP100k) and anywhere from 1 year to life in the Bangkok Hilton. If the smuggler is permitted back into The Kingdom he will be a 'person of interest' and will be under surveillance by the RTP (Royal Thai Police).

Nearly 22 years ago I traveld on a flight from Zurich to Genoa (Italy) and was detained at the airport for a long while. I originally had a ticket to fly Zurich to Florence but had to change it to Genoa since I was done with work in Zurich a day earlier than expected. And on that particular day the Florence flight was sold out or cancelled. So I took a flight to Genoa and planned to take a train to Pisa and then to Florence. The officers in Genoa thought is was unusual for an Indian national to land in Genoa from Zurich. They first took nearly 1.5 hours to clear my immigration. I got very restless and a bit aggressive. Then they let me go but detained me at the customs and seached my luggage thoroughly. They found nothing and the office told me I can repack my stuff. Then the officer told his boss that he let me go but came back with him. The senior officer searched again and took out all my stuff and did a micro search. Finally he said I could go. But I asked him to repack my stuff. He was shocked. He said he wouldn't do it. I told him once I repacked but then they couldn't do it as many times as they wish. The officers were very surprised but the senior asked his junior to repack. After coming out of the airport I remained just outside the customs office for nearly half an hour making phone calls from an airport phone. The guys were looking at me from inside and talking something. The junior customs officer was repacking I asked him why I was being treated like this. He said the immigration thought it was strange that I took Genoa as port of entry instead of Rome or Florence or Milan.

Well, 1,500 kilos of cocaine has a street value of about eighty million dollars straight up (almost 60 million pounds). That's just monetary value; the purpose of combating drugs like cocaine goes beyond the effects to the economy. People will die / be harmed / become addicted from use. Between that, and the eighty million a year, I'd say it's worth it. The cost to society from turning a blind eye to a ton-and-a-half of cocaine is too high. Not to mention that the ton-and-a-half would become many hundreds of tons, once the dealers knew that customs didn't care.

1. 'Did you pack the bags yourselves?' Always followed immediately by: 2.'So you're aware of the contents of the bags?' As though the two propositions are naturally, automatically equivalent. They're not, and they know they're not, and this is a trap. Packing your bags, and being aware of what's in them hours later, after they've been out of your possession for hours and handled by complete strangers, are not the same things at all. If you automatically and carelessly answer 'yes' to the second question, and then they find bad things in your bags, you have already compromised your position by acknowledging, 'for the record', that 'you knew it was there'. This is exactly the game they're playing, and exactly why. But heaven help you if you start to equivocate on the second question (as you should); get ready to be 'taught a lesson!' It's not any accident that they pair these questions so directly, so smoothly, always (even implying that they're equivalent propositions by linking them together with '...so...'), and I don't know why they're even allowed to do it. They shouldn't be. It's sheer entrapment.

About 3 years ago I arrived at Dublin from Turkey and the man next to me in the plane had some kind of fit, it was scary. I was still shaken up while going through Customs, they thought I was a smuggler. A man stopped me in the Green channel and asked me about cigarettes, I truthfully answered about 30, he was so rude, just indicated to put my luggage through the x ray machine, then when it was negative just walked away. I did not know what to do, so a lady customs officer said it was ok and I could go. It was the last straw, a long long day and I dissolved into tears outside the airport, a very nice man, in uniform, was so kind. I had an internal flight in Turkey then hours at Istanbul before the flight to Dublin and I have always been treated with kindness at Dublin, this was a real shock. And I made it to my Dads' on the other side of the country, have not been back since because of Covid, Dublin does not feel like a welcoming place any more, I am sad because I was born there, brought up in London. I will avoid Dublin and do Shannon or Knock in future. Sad when you don't want to go back to where you were born!
