Simple tip when your cooking a roast Karen, oven bags, perfect for caravans and saves the mess, and buy a small 2 burner cooker and cook outside as much as you can, also you need those pots and pans that fit inside of each other and the handles come off for ease of storing

Recipe: fry three rashes of bacon set aside, fry one or two chicken breast (without bone and skin, beat it flat in plastic bag to a thin fillet) in the same pan for ten minutes, add back in bacon, and add in sliced mushrooms, 1 Tbsp minced onion, pepper. Add cream to cover and cook till it thickens a wee bit, be ready in probably another 5-7 minutes. Eat with a large leafy green salad. Yummy!

You say in your video that you're 'not a big cook' but your food looks delicious! The key I've found to caravan cooking, is prep, and be organised with space - (and washing up!) My other half keeps well out of my way when I'm cooking in the 'van as he know if he gets in my way there'll be trouble! Especially if its already too warm and I'm trying to ensure everything is warm at the same time ready for plating it up. PS if you haven't already got two, getting a 2nd oven shelf is a must too! I know a lot of UK 'vans only come with the one.

To maximize burner usage, I use a stainless steel colander to steam greens above whilst hard veges like carrots and potatoes cook in water in pot below. Colander also super useful for other uses around the kitchen. To save space you can even get the ones that fold up like a fan. However, be mindful of aluminum, we try to avoid it particularly in cooking products, has strong links to Alzheimer’s. Off topic, but make sure your deodorant is aluminum free too 😀
@TravellingK6 жыл бұрын
Hmmm fold up like a fan... I'll keep an eye out for it! I didn't know about the aluminum link - thank you.

Hi Karen, Just come across from another vlog. Slowly making my way through the playlist. I am not in a caravan, was in a VW in an earlier life, but for cooking on a budget I have found 'Miguel Barclay' aka 'One Pound Chef' cookbooks an inspiration. Each meal being broken down into single servings, and ingredients are what is found in most cupboards. Might be worth having a look. * insert non inducement clause here*
I really don't think I'm a good cook... but thank you!

Hi Karen , just a couple of things. one utube the narrow boat chef ,. and two in the USA they have meal kits called street kitchen all you add is chicken or beef depending on the dish and it is all one or two pot cooking the other is what used to be just hamburger helper, but now it's tuna helper and beef helper etc simple to make and if you are feeling a bit adventure's they give tips on the box to take it up a notch, like different veggies and the like. and third this is a favorite of mine from my Navy day's . ham and egg banjo . take a fresh 6inch roll lots of soft butter, 4_6 slices of honey ham or black forest ham. Two runny fried eggs, place it all in the roll. take several paper towels and wear an old t shirt. sit down at a table with a cup of tea and enjoy. WARNING WARNING. this if the eggs are done right WILL be messy. the warm yoke will find its way out but MMMMMMM. enjoy Be safe.
@TravellingK5 жыл бұрын
The ham and egg banjo sounds very messy but I imagine it's worth the mess! I do feel like we have less easy meal options in NZ than the UK and possibly less than the USA too?
@colingibson80185 жыл бұрын
Travelling K The USA is the worst or best depending on your point of view as far as fast easy meals. That's why as I said I always take it up a bit either with there sudgestion or my own. I sometimes feel that they should have more veggies in them. To me it dose two things ,one as I live with just my fur babies, it gives me a larger meal so it will stretch further. and two sometimes I don't feel I get enough veggies.. Something I didn't say about the banjo, was if you can try to eat it while it's relatively still warm. I don't know but to me it's so much better.. I hope that you are enjoying your UK tour. Would love to come to one of your meet and greets. But Oklahoma is a bit far. be safe.

Cut up bacon and mushrooms fry them make sauce from cream cheese and add some herbs or if you can get the cheese with it already in then use that it's much easier .add double cream and cook some pasta when you are melting the cream cheese by the time you are adding the mushrooms and bacon to cream cheese pasta should be nearly ready if you use a quick cook one . Only need two pans for cooking everything as you use the same pan for cooking bacon and mushrooms as making pasta sauce. You just put bacon and mushrooms in a bowl when you make the sauce.the other pan is for pasta . Not a lot to wash after. And bacon is easier to cut with scissors than a knife.

@@TravellingK Sunday roast ;) Back in the 1980s when we caravanned, we didn't have mains hook-up, microwave or bathroom ! We didn't have much in the way of hot meals - well, for one, it was summer - so salads were common. Plates, cups, dishes etc. made of Melamine - so they'd bounce if dropped. 2 burner gas stove with grill. The van didn't even come with a fridge ! We had to fit one ! Mind you, it was a good fridge - by the fourth day the milk was frozen ;) Gas fired as well! We had one gas lamp over the table - not used & fluorescent lights elsewhere. Only 1 sink. Pumped water - so tap was left on all the time and to get water out of it, just switched the pump on - and off again when we'd got enough.
