Aslan and I now leave our overnight mooring and head straight into King's Orchard marina. Here I get the diesel tank filled and buy some smokeless coal for the stove.
Whilst in the marina I take a quick look around the facilities and services on offer, which include a fleet of holiday hire boats.
Later and after mooring up again for the evening, I make an unexspected discovery and as a result, once again find myself visiting King's Orchard Marina.

Hi Derek. They were used to store canal stop-planks in. Now blocked off because people liked climbing inside and I believe were often used as shelters by homeless folk and so on. Shame really, if they keep someone from hypothermia, no harm done. Oh well, good old Health and Safety. :|

Great vlog. As a Military man of 40 years service, most of it on diesel submarines, I can tell you the talk around the dinner table was of family, arguing who had the biggest portion of Arctic Roll, selecting the movie (if we weren’t on patrol) and how to survive in such crap conditions. If you think a narrowboat is cramped !!!!! Thanks for sharing your time with us. AJ

"The things I thought I could never live without . . " Wise words, Kevin! What we all could live without, I dare say, are military firing ranges. Such a lovely contrast to chug along with you and Aslan as the high-speed trains move people through space, missing the view and all those things that are truly important.

Well, I don't know how many other narrowboats might have the same engine that auld Aslan has, so that thumping might just be a rare thing indeed. I follow several narrowboaters vlogs and each has a craft with a different sounding powerplant. It is rather strange that (a) I don't live in the U.K. and (b) I don't even own a watercraft of ANY description (I did once have a canoe...) but there is something ...well... comforting in watching someone going from point A to point B ... at a walking pace... and not trying to overtake the next boat...and seeing a landscape that has seen thousands of years of history. Well, half of my ancestry is North American "First Nations" , so that lineage goes back more than 20,000 years in the Americas. The Scottish side... ??? It is interesting to trace the history on the landscape and much can be seen if one knows what to look for. Keep auld Aslan thumping along.

If you want a wind turbine for low cost, you might consider building your own - if you can get to a car breakers yard, you can find the parts you need: An old alternator and a radiator fan or fan clutch assembly to use as the turbine blades. Bolt the fan blades to the alternator spindle, make a mounting bracket to hold it, with a roller bearing or ball bearing to allow it to swivel, and a triangular piece of metal or wood sticking out the back to use as the "sail", which keeps it facing into the wind when the wind direction changes. An alternator is ideal as a DIY generator for several reasons: For a start, it is designed to do the job, much better than using an old DC motor run backwards as a dynamo. It can also put out a fair amount of power - modern alternators are rated for at least a kilowatt, with some capable of making nearly 2 kilowatts. Most importantly, it has an integrated rectifier and voltage regulator, so will always put out exactly the voltage you need for charging lead-acid batteries no matter how fast it spins. Which is what it does in a car - the alternator is spun by the engine by a belt, and the engine speed changes a lot in that situation. Since you presumably have an alternator on board which is driven by the boat engine, you should be able to connect the DIY alternator wind turbine to the same charging circuit without much difficulty. If the voltage output from both alternators is the same (which it should be if the voltage regulators on both are working properly) then the charging circuit should be able to use power from both of them at the same time - if you want to be able to use the DIY wind turbine while you are chugging along, that is. There are many instructional videos on youtube which describe how to do this, if you want to give it a go.

As a recently new viewer I'm really enjoying your weekly vlogs. That massively protruding tree just after Whittington (17m 10 secs) is now sorted. Me and some fellow IWA volunteers cut it right back last month. I wish we could do something about that shallow part in Fisherwick with the encroaching reeds, but it needs a dredger and CRT will only deal with it if they get enough complaints from boaters.

I lived in a harbor in the Florida Keys for about six months a few years back. We had a Wind generator which I think was on its last legs or the battery bank was going bad because even after blowing all day and all night long we could only get one 120w light bulb to dimly light up the cabin for about 45 minutes a night! Not to mention when the wind really start kicking up they can get loud, and annoying. My advice would be to add a couple more panels if you're looking for more power!

Hi Kevin, yet another enjoyable episode. Have you ever given any thought to buying a CB radio. During our days afloat we would not be without ours ,we found it invaluable as regards info about villages and towns that we would moor up in, such things as the best curry house, take away, pubs ect, and of course local towpath gossip and canal reports. Many boaters do have CB radios aboard for just these reasons. Not expensive and you don't need a licence. Just food for thought, take care Paul & Lyn.

My family and I now dream, of at the very least, renting a narrow boat for a vacation some day, and because of you I have fantasies of leaving it all behind for the canal life 😅. The only thing I kept saying throughout the episodes on Amazon was I wish he'd show us more of his day to day goings on inside the boat, other then your cooking segments of course.. Anyways your videos are great, I'm jealous, you're so lucky to have that life 😊 Good luck and I'll surely be watching.

Cheers for watching on Amazon. 🙂 Over the years I've shown, talked about and covered pretty much every part of boat life, both on Amazon and KZbin. Besides cooking, shaving, getting dressed and laying in bed, I'm not sure what else to show - stuff that won't get me banned off KZbin that is. 🫣

Pulling into the marina with all of the boats for rent must give you a great feeling knowing you have Aslan. You can go where you want, when you want for as long as you want. That’s freedom & freedom is hard to beat. Kevin, remember to add those 4 miles to your “miles traveled log” 😂 I went through the same process of elimination when I retired to my boat. After the initial shock I found it to be a liberating experience. I won’t go back. Don’t need it. Don’t want it. Aaahhhh.

I know exactly what you mean about getting rid of stuff that you couldn’t do without. Maybe it’s just part of getting older….. Great video. Thanks Kevin! 👍👍👍👊😎

Very true, George. Keeping the pile of possessions at a minimum, is in tandem with keeping the old belly at sensible proportions, I find. :)

Perfect!! Sounds of Aslan and a tour of the canal. Poured a glass of wine, sat back and calmly listened. Love how you notice things missing, or added, from previous seasons. Like the park bench under the bridge and you show us!! Really nice. Well done Kevin great episode. Went too fast.

Noticing again, no wakes! Such an enjoyable time on the water without rocking back and forth.

Hey Kevin, nice to see Whittington feature. I met you as you passed through last year (2022). Stalked you in that Coop then got you a beer. Told you the tale of my injured wife. Was a pleasure to meet you. Trust you're well.

Ah yes I remember well Peter, especially the stalking bit. Only kidding. Hope your wife has put all that behind her now.

("Fanny Toot" ha!) -- how fortunate you were, Kevin, to locate and recover your mislaid mooring chain!!! must take a moment during these brief remarks to compliment your boat-handling skills, the way you pilot Aslan, apparently effortlessly, through and around tight spots and obstacles, driving the front end of the craft by adjustments to the rudder at the stern -- most impressive!!!
