I have the exact hitch system and I've never seen a better video. The ONLY thing that I'd like to have explained better ( and you may have another video to do this) is moving the hitch coupler up or down to make your truck ride more level. Having said this you did an excellent job of describing the pros and cons of this hitch system. Thank you!

Liked the video. The main reason for a weight distribution hitch is to shift some of the weight off the rear axle and onto the front axle of the tow vehicle. This gives you back your steering control. Every time I have set one up it was important to measure the front fender to ground and return it to within less than 1" of the unloaded measurement. Nothing more scary than seeing travel trailers going down the road nose down and the tow vehicle's nose up.
@bricknboxer
@bricknboxer 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly right Ray. To see the difference the WD system is making requires measuring the front fender well height or by weighing the front axle. That's the goal, to nearly restore the front axle to stock height / weight. The amount of squat in the rear of the tow vehicle isn't where the focus should be.
@fs_dave
@fs_dave 26 күн бұрын
Correct, Ray. I'm confused why shifting weight to the front axle was never mentioned.

A female tower here and looking to purchase her first travel trailer of a larger size. Have towed a smaller trailer and didn't need the WD/SWay hitch. Looking for something that is easy for us to use but effective. This seems easy enough. I like the video and feel confident we could do this. Thank you for this. There are so many and so many opinions.

Had an E2 hitch for our 2017 2285 Lance. Never could get it dialed in. Dealer set up with empty water tank. Switched to an Andersen WD hitch. What a difference. No more bars to deal with. Easy to make adjustments, just tighten 2 nuts while trailer is still attached. All components combined only weigh 35 lbs... Built in sway control by design. No need to remove or loosen anything when backing up & sharp turns. It's a completely different design than most others, but it really works.... One of the WDH that Lance recomends. It is critical that you have the correct brackets for your spcific frame size.

Delaney, I have the same hitch system - brand new - and as a matter of fact, after unhitching yesterday, I was awake much of the night wishing I had taken a picture of the hitch and the process. So, along comes Delaney to make it look easy. Oh, and 29 miles of interstate towing and the whole thing was smooth. Thank you and I'll sleep better tonight.

A weight distributing hitch does shift some weight to the trailer axles but the main function is to restore weight to the front steering axle/s. The idea is to get the front of the tow vehicle back to being as close to its original position as possible for safe steering and braking. As result of the weight shift the rear end will recover some of its unloaded height but is not mandatory for a safe hitch setup.

We have the Husky CenterLine TS. It works as it should in terms of towing stability but it can be difficult to hitch up, especially at campsites. We now take them off as soon as we get to the park. Makes it much easier to manoeuvre in tight spaces and to hitch or unhitch when we can’t get our tow vehicle perfectly straight in line with our tt.

I have been using the Equalizer hitch for the past 9 1/2 years. It has worked great and has been easy to use. I have no problems backing up with the Equalizer. I have used this hitch on three different travel trailers and trucks. I had to adjust (raise one hole) the hitch for my new truck this year. I do not get sucked into the passing 18 wheelers anymore with the new truck. My previous trucks were a 2012 F150 and 2015 F250 Diesel. My new truck is a 2020 Chevy 3500 SRW gasser. My travel trailer is a 2019 Rockwood 2608BS. I love the Lance travel trailers. Awesome video!

I just bought a camper. I’ve had campers in the past, but they were smaller and lighter than this one. It came with an equalizer weight distribution system. I know very little about that type of thing because my campers were always small and didn’t need anything. This camper weighs 4500 pounds dry weight. I’m going to be towing it with my 1994 Ford F150. It did come with the tow package. I took it out for a test spin around the block and up some small hills, but did not have the weight distribution system on just my old hitch. I noticed that it does porpoise. Will the equalizer help reduce the porpoising?

This is a great hitch . We made a big mistake and didn't check one side to make sure the bar was locked. When we had gotten home the bar was missing and had some damage to the system not the camper it did exactly like you said it bent the hanger. Lesson learned so buying a new bar and the hanger .

Husky Centerline TS with 4 pt sway control. No adjustments to the sway control needed and don't need to loosen anything before backing into the campsite. Works almost identical to the equalizer hitch. Love it. Just to point out a measurement even more important than the rear sag is the front lift. Measure just like you did but with the front tires. You want to gain at least half the distance back towards stock ride height after the wd system is fully hooked up compared to when the trailer is simply on the ball.

Great video on an important and sometimes confusing subject! We went with the Fastway e2 with the 1,000 pound square bars, which is similar to the Equal-i-zer. What I like best about it is that you can keep the bars on when backing up. Plus you can install and remove them even when the tow vehicle and trailer aren’t even close to being lined up which is a must for our driveway.

Truck is a 2019 Chevy Silverado 2500HD 4x4 double cab 6.5 ft bed towing 2020 Grand Design 17MKE using a Equalizer 90-00-1000 system. I have to use a 2.5 to 2 inch sleeve to use this hitch as when I bought it we had a 2 inch receiver on our 1/2 ton Silverado. There is some “slop” so we use a tightening clamp to make it more solid. The setup works great! Both vehicles it did well so I’m liking this system but it’s the only one I ever have used. I did not want a Chain setup and wanted to be able to backup with the weight bars if needed. Like you, I disconnect the transfer bars when backing up long distances or up my steep driveway. Great content it's always nice to have Hands-On video for people learning. The only thing I have to add when you do the measurement on the truck it needs to be measured at all four corners and when you are setting up your weight distribution bars the goal needs to be the front measurement needs to be within 1 in or less of unhooked measurement. And trailer needs to be a touch down in the front so I parallel measure the frame off the ground my trailer is an1 3/4" down in the front it's a 34 foot trailer and my front measurement when hooked up to trailer with weight distribution is within 1/2 inch of unhooked height and my toe experience is good. I use the Curt #17500 weight distribution hitch with active sway control no washers to adjust set it and forget it no greasy bars to handle works well 2 trailers five years no issues. I also use Helwig 2500 lb helper springs lifetime warranty adjustable from soft to firm works well . Thanks for sharing your video. I don't see why you can't pack into a campsite without loosening it up if you can drive forward through all the tight turns you should be able to back up also just my opinion and again thank you. I never have had to unhook anything on mine well back in tight places. Just sharing

I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to explain 🤔 You still are looking at similar tongue weight capacity. Yes larger truck with a smaller trailer will tow better as far as power but Sway Control is still a very important factor. My trailer has 1k dry tongue weight so even with my 1Ton truck I need weight distribution. And I'm running about 15 thousand loaded with a tall toy hauler so Sway Control is very important for Safety.

We are very new to towing a trailer and not knowing any better we requested the full hitch and 2 sway bars when we purchaced for Geo Pro 19fbs. I think many of our problems getting those sway bars on are due to our inexperience, it gets a little easer every time we hook up and I'm sure by next season we will be hooking up with no problem.

Had an Equalizer hitch for 30 ft Forest River Super Light Flagstaff. Sway was extremely scary and we lost control due to wind and went over into the next lane narrowly avoiding another vehicle. Purchased reconditioned Hensley Swift Arrow (has chain adjustment) from factory. Absolutely no sway ever. Emergency stops straight on the road. Yes it is a learning curve to hitch up with it if not straight or unlevel. Wouldn't change because it does the job. And yes it is heavy.

@@MDFRfiredriver It all depends on the Trailer Weight 😉 You can put 3 trailers same size different manufacturers side by side and they can be completely different in Weight. Hi Patrick and Patty!! I hope you two are doing really well!! Whew...we've had historical level of tourists in Ouray both last year and this year. Well....my f350 arrived in June. Our Outdoors RV travel trailer should arrive by late September-ish. I was just inquiring with the dealer with regards to their weight distributing hitches in stock; they said they carry the Equalizer E2 hitch and these Eaz-lift R6's. I told the rep that we will be almost exclusively doing boondocking here in CO and the immediate surrounding states, so I would prefer a hitch that doesn't hang low. So, they directed me to the Eaz-lifts. I wasn't familiar with them, so searched on KZbin. And what do you know, you had a video on the R3s!! Safe travels to you two plus puppies!!

We just purchased and installed a R3 for our new Jayco RL24. Heading out on our first trip tomorrow. I really like the way the R3 operates, but I would like to make a couple of suggestions for someone considering this or any hitch. First, I could not attach the bar hangers on one side of the frame due to a keeper bracket for the wiring that the manufacturer had installed dead center between the propane tanks and the battery box attachment. There was no way to work around it, so I had to remove the keeper. I don’t think this is going to be a problem, but I may relocate the keeper later. Secondly, none of the manufacturer’s videos or written instructions cover specifically how to adjust the turn screw that sets the weight distribution bars downforce. This adjustment is important to get equal height between the front and rear axles on the tow vehicle. It appears that it is done be trial and error. I noticed that you didn’t measure the front wheels in your video and said that you were transferring more weight to the trailer axels. While this may be true, the important thing is to transfer weight to the front wheels of the tow vehicle for improved steering and braking. You did a very good job in describing the sway control system and how to adjust it. Finally, it should be noted that the hitch requires proper lubrication with a grease gun and a bit of grease should be applied to the inside of the trailer tongue ball receiver to eliminate noise. This should be done prior to each trip.

I have the Equalizer system and find it very useful for my application. I wasn’t advised by my RV dealer to purchase one at delivery. They should have warned me that even with my smaller Forrest River FQ16 trailer when traveling the highways the traffic such as 18 wheelers and large trucks would really blow the trailer and cause sway very badly. One trip and my mind was made up that for $459.00 it would be cheap to feel safer and have no sway. Also the tongue weight isn’t as great as some trailers but it really sagged my Expedition EL truck and made the steering awful light. After the Equalizer that went away and leveled my truck a huge amount. Set up was explained very well and I did it myself. I recently changed vehicles to a GMC Yukon XL “suburban” and tested my setup from the Expedition. It was perfect !!! No need for adjustment at all. Although the Ford and GMC are different they are in the same class. Note also the GMC has an air ride leveling system that Ford doesn’t so it all worked out. One very nice feature I noticed on your anti sway/ leveling hitch is the adjustability and ability to loosen the sway system for maneuvering. Great idea, I’ve found especially on my Ford with the Equalizer sharp maneuvering turns would keep forces on the frame of the truck and I would see the centering of the steering wheel be off center until I either turned the opposite direction or did some left to right swaying intentionally and it would reset the weight properly. Strange but it was noticed. The system you have would eliminate that by loosening it before sharp turn maneuvering. Thanks for the great demo.

Our dealer installed the R3 Recurve that is rated for uptown 1500# tongue weight. I think they could have went with the next lower one that is rated for uptown 1200# tongue weight. Our tongue weight never exceeds 1000#. I have since switched to the Andersen Weight Distribution hitch which I absolutely love. It has built in sway and uses chains instead of bars, It saves us about 25# of hitch weight. You don't have to take if off to back up like you do with the bar systems and its quiet compared to the bars. I am going to do a video on it but it will probably be March before I get that done do to the fact that our RV is in the shop and the snow we currently have.

Great video…but I have a comment. I have the same camco WDH,my Rockford mini lite weighs 4600 lbs. my camper dealer originally installed the 1000 bars and it rode so rough and bounced up and down going down the road. I called Camco service and they were great, they advised the bars I had were too much. I needed the 600 lb bars. They called my camper dealer and educated them not to sell everyone the 1000 lb bars but to match the bars to the weight of the RV. Camco sent me the correct bars and didn’t even ask for the 1000 lbs back Wow what a difference the 600lbs bars made in ride quality. Soooo smooth. So I noticed your camper, it appears to be in the size range of my Mini light double axel, so are you happy with the 1000 lb bars? Or does your camper weigh nearly 10,000 lbs?

I do not loosen mine when backing up. If the hitch can't turn in reverse without damage, how could it make sharp turns going forward? Yes, it might wear the friction material a minuscule amount (unnecessarily) when backing up, but there's no way it's harmful to the hitch and you might wear the material out a day or two earlier over it's lifetime. I wish Camco was better in their directions on setting up the friction. "Add desired friction" with the collar screw is a pretty crappy way to direct a product. I am currently in the process of tweaking my WD using the FALR (front axle load restoration) measurement method and am currently at 1/2 a turn after snugging the collar bolt as you are doing. Once I am 100% fine tuned with my WD set up as mentioned, I will tweak the friction method. I think they could have did a chart such as: trailers from 15-20ft start with ______ truns, trailers 21-25ft with ______ turns or by weight etc. Just seems like they could have done some testing to get the consumer in the ball park a little easier.

Hi Rick! We just installed the Andersen Weight Distribution Hitch and are going to be trying it out this summer. The ReCurve R3 is a very good system and worked well for us. The reasons I wanted to. try the Andersen is that 1) its lighter weight as it uses chains instead of bars 2) it doesn't have to be removed before backing up into sights with tight turns 3) its quiet vs the normal squeaking you get with other systems. I have only towed once with it and am still getting us to it.

Hey Patrick, I purchased the Andresen sway bar assembly after reading so many good reviews about it. But after several trips with my new Tundra and 5,176 dry weight trailer I’m still getting some body roll. The truck has plenty of power but I get this rolling or movement in the back end. Since I haven’t used any other sway bar with the Tundra I’m not sure if it’s normal. I did upgrade the tires to see if that would eliminate the problem, maybe helped a little but not a lot. Some tire companies have told me to add air bags, but I don’t want to put anymore money into this unless I know it’s going to fix the problem. Do you have this problem and how do you like the Andersen sway bar compared to your previous one? Thanks, and keep the videos coming.

Next, level you're trailer front to back with trailer jack, measure the height of the trailer coupler at the top of it, when you set your ball on you're truck, you want the ball to be about 1 inch higher than the trailer coupler. you may have to mess around a few times to get the ball as close to this as you can, either the shank fits one way, or flip the shank, then try getting the ball to the 1 inch rise mark ?. PLEASE KEEP THIS IN MIND !!!. the pin with washers ( mine has this ), you must place this pin and the spacer washers to tilt the head unit toward the trailer, when you do this, it puts the spring bars down at a certain angle, WHICH IS WHAT YOU WANT !. make sure all bolts on head unit are tight !, now pop in the spring bars, put the chain links on the latch peg, snap it up, put the pin in to keep it locked in the up position. ( you may have the bar type that rest on the ledge instead of the snap up chain type ? , but either one..you still get the idea how they will work ). Before you go installing the chain links ?, measure the rear and front wheel well, write it down, now lower trailer down on ball until jack is off ground, by now you will notice the back of the truck is sunk very low ?, ok, latch the trailer on ball, raise the trailer tongue up with it hitched to ball, back end on truck will go up as well, slide the spring bars up into the hitch head, count from the end tip of spring bars up, no less that 5 links !, attach to snap up, do both sides. now lower jack until foot is off ground, now go measure the rear wheel well , and front wheel well, you want the target measurement to be within 1/2 is posb, spec on front wheel well !. ( again..if using the flat bar type on ledge system, you will need to adjust the height on the trailer frame ?, or add more spacer washer to the pin in the head ? ).your goal here is to keep the trailer level, as well as your truck level both front and back.what ever you do ?, DO NOT OVER LOAD THE REAR AXLE !!. when you do this ?, you remove all weight from the front steering axle..and this will not end well for you..or anyone around you on the road !. Now install the sway bar, instructions that came with this WDH will tell you how and where to mount it. a good few turns on the sway bar handle until it is tight, then back it off about 1/4 turn. NEVER BACK UP WITH THE SWAY BAR ATTACHED !!!. i do not mind getting out, pulling two pins, pop it off, toss it in the truck bed..takes a whole 30 sec's to do so ?..lol. other than all this ?, i love my pro reese set-up. p.s. if you're truck is lifted ?, you can get shanks with lower drops to make it easier to level the trailer and truck :-).

@@TravelswithDelaney Well I've heard that claim but I've seen a lot of people say you just have to learn to set the "attitude" of the hitch when you unhook it. From what I've seen so far, you don't want to back all the tension off your weight distribution bars if your truck sits with a decent rake. The jacks (assuming they have that model and not the chain model) control the tilt of the hitch and need to be adjusted to match your truck's hitch angle. My RAM sits with a lot of rake so I leave a decent amount of tension on the bars when I unhook. I don't have a lot of experience with it yet though.
