It still disturbs me that Jim pulls two near-death stunts with the full knowledge of how dangerous they are because he really doesn't care about his life that much. Danger is the only excitement that distracts him from his insecurities. Such a great introduction to his character.

When I look back at it now, it seems like one of the most extra things that Jim has done now and I don't know why, probably because he's surfing all the way across a vast empty Valley all by himself and did it just for the thrill of it and to make the scene more dramatic aaaaaaannndd I just answered my own question, didn't i?

@@saltyfishface4618 It's been a long time since I've seen the film, but aside from what you said, I'd also say it looks like Jim just accomplished a solar surfing move that's pretty hard on its own: He nosedived as far as one could go without smashing into the ground before activating the sails on his hoverboard (his free hand looks like its literally no more than four feet off the ground right before the scream, it's not a wide margin of error he allowed himself), and seeing how he continues to push himself right after (going into a forbidden area, flying the windmill of death), it shows how much he's pushing it physically and still succeeding tremendously, despite what police or his mom might say. It's a display of adolescent exuberance, and we're all here for it.

@MelloMathTeacher
@MelloMathTeacher 3 жыл бұрын
@@awesomefan935 Well, some surmise that Disney killed it off intentionally. I remember seeing a 30-40-something minute video describing how such a spectacular movie flopped so badly at the box office. The two biggest things I remember from it were these: 1) The commercials didn't do it justice. In fact, they did just about the worst job possible: They spoil the existence of Ben (who doesn't appear until 2/3 of the way through the film), they spoil Morph's status as a hero (appears to be the cyborg's sidekick), spoil the fact that pirates were part of the crew, just about *everything.* And also paint it as a silly comedy rather than the epic it really is. 2) It was released the same weekend as, get this: **Harry Potter and the Chamber of Friggin' Secrets.** I remember my brother saw Harry Potter with a bunch of friends in theatres that day for his birthday. I wasn't interested, and was a bit young for it, so I saw Treasure Planet instead. Very, very glad I did.

Man, how can anyone hate this film. This was my childhood! I grew up idolizing Jim Hawkins, and not just because of how amazing a character he is, but for THIS moment RIGHT HERE! The simple fact that he is flying through the air on a solar surfer, being completely reckless in his actions, not caring for his own life, and just being free to define his own destiny without letting anyone tell him otherwise. That, to me, was the essence of a true human being, and it still is today. He may be a rebellious teenager, but goddamn if he isn't one of the most epic reckless teenagers in Disney history.

It’s wasn’t a matter of how great the film is and it’s fantastic it was a matter of when it was released. Not only was it a summer movie released in the winter but it was heavily spoiled in its own trailers and given the impossible task of going up against the first Harry Potter movie. Had all that not happened the movie would’ve gotten the recognition it deserved a long time ago

Such a underrated Disney animated movie. Just how the animation goes from one scene to the next. The daring stunts, twice. Why can't Disney make a sequel, but not a cheesy sequel, but something based on their original ideas of a sequel for Treasure Planet. Again such an inspiring Disney movie, and needs more appreciation I think. Not too much more, but enough to make it more appreciated than what it got by the criticisms from 2002 to now. 12 years later, and still a movie that hasn't really aged one bit.
@paulsmithson303
@paulsmithson303 9 жыл бұрын
I don't think they should ever do a sequel to this film for 2 reasons: 1. Treasure Planet is destroyed, and 2. Most Disney sequels are lame and a sequel to this film would just destroy the reputation of the first one. However, I think they should make a prequel to the film, where it can all be about John Silver's past: how he grew up to be a pirate captain, how he became a cyborg, how he found Morph, etc. I think that would be terrific!!!
@OfirBeck
@OfirBeck 9 жыл бұрын
If you want, there's a fan-fiction archive full of inspired ideas for a sequel based on other Victorian Classics. like Gulliver's travels- where an immortal spacer is lost in strange new galaxies where there are planet-sized ships or worlds with humanoid animals who rule over savage men

@theoneaspen4667 6 жыл бұрын
paul smithson this is not entirely true. There was a sequel planned where Silver was going to make a comeback and a love interest was going to help Jim and Silver fight against a pirate named Ironbeard. A television spinoff was also planned for Treasure Planet during Jims time at the acadamy. It never came to light because Treasure Planet itself was a bomb at the box office and of course if there's no money behind it, a studio isn't going to produce more content.

It was a bust because Disney made it a bust. Disney had a grudge against it's creators and how ambitious they were being with the story/animation. I love this scene so much. It’s actually a mirror scene to the one where Jim rescues the crew on Treasure Planet. A lot of movements and music here are the same as in that one. Here it gets him in trouble, in the second scene it saves everyone. Jim was never able to shine on Montressor. The story in between these two scenes shows him that his talents are actually valuable and appreciated and can get him really far, if he uses them for the right things.

In every Disney movie, they always have an iconic scene that makes the animation perfect. The Lion King had the Circle of Life, Beauty and the Beast had the ball room, Snow White had when the Prince kisses Snow White, Tarzan had when he was swinging through the trees, Peter Pan had the flying scene wth Wendy, and Treasure Planet has Jim riding his solar surfur through the clouds and in the ground.

Barely anyone notices is that Jims capacity for danger and him playing with fire is what most likely saved him and his friends in the last action scene of the movie when he saved the crew from the planets destruction. It's amazing character development shown, a beautiful analogy, from recklessness and aimless chaos involving the police and consequences into the sheer drive to save everyone, to take responsibility, thematizing the thing that used to get him in trouble before, extreme surfing. The difference between clearly enjoying the danger and his facial expressions of absolute focus and seriousness in the only other surfing scene in the movie, where his recklessness paid off, was him redeeming himself for the trouble he caused with the police. The last action scene of the movie always reminds me of Silver's speech. This was Jim's time to shine, and all of them really caught some of the light coming off of him, which was exactly what Silver was talking about. Truly a masterpiece.

You gotta think that he build his own solar surfer when he was 8 so that saved him and his mum money if there was more solar surfers which could be better his turned out great.and parents in this world dont even let their kids out their site unless they know where they going but Jim takes his surfer free Falls and almost dies but doesnt and gets caught by police many times without much of a punishment from his mom now u know that means something. I love this movie I wish they would reboot it to be better then make a second one.

This movie defined my childhood. I’m grown now, and it’s still my favorite Disney movie. Growing up I simulated everything about James Hawkins; haircut, style, attitude, characteristics, everything. I have never related and empathized with a character so deeply, that it grew to be a part of who I am. This movie and character hold a special place in my heart and always will. Disney might see this as their greatest failure, I 1000% disagree. This movie was ahead of its time just like Brother Bear and Atlantis all 3 movies have aged very well. I can’t wait to share this timeless movie with my future partner and kids. In fact I love this movie so much I’m getting it tattooed and I’m so excited for it. I hope you’re doing good and if you’re not I promise it gets better. Nothing lasts forever.
