A Weldbond wash can help stop grout bleed on a mosaic glass on glass piece. **IMPORTANT** If you have used Weldbond as your initial adhesive to adhere the tess the Weldbond Wash can reactivate that adhesive and it may take considerable time to dry again but the grouting can also reactivate that adhesive and will take considerable time to dry as well. To help speed up drying time keep your piece at room temperature. Also depending on your initial adhesive do a small test first to ensure the Weldbond wash doesn't react with it.

Thanks again, Peter for your expertise. A question: Do I need to clean the Weldbond out of the grout spaces? I can see there is a lot of white in between the tesserae. Will that prevent the grout from doing it's job? Will the Weldbond be white on the other side of the grout, or will it dry thoroughly after the grouting?
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Maggie. When you do the Weldbond Wash you arent filling the grout lines up with Weldbond, you are only putting in a little bit in the grout lines it will find the areas where you may have missed with the adhesive. The Weldbond Wash should only be just in the very bottom of the grout lines if the adhesive is filled to the top or even half way thats too much and I would soak it up out of the grout lines if thats the case. Make sure its dry before grouting, it will go white again but will dry, how quick it will dry that will depend on how much adhesive is missing from adhering the tess down. That piece that I made, I applied the Weldbond wash, it was dry the next day and I grouted 2 days later it went a little white again and then it was completely clear 2 days after that. I always keep everything at room temperature it helps with the drying. If you have used Weldond as your initial adhesive to adhere the tess down the Weldbond Wash may reactivate that adhesive and you will need to wait for it to dry again before grouting, that can take some time to dry but the grouting can also reactivate that adhesive again as Weldbond is moisture sensitive. :)

Hi Brenda, Thankyou so much. I can’t comment on you job specifically but what l can say is don’t use any wood outside as it interacts with the environment that’s it’s in no matter how well it’s sealed, using wood outside in a mosaic will not give it longevity. The only time that a Weldbond wash is used is really in a glass on glass piece so as the grout doesn’t seep under the semi transparent glass pieces and be seen. Even then it’s not necessary if the glass tess is adhered correctly. 😊

I used weldbond once for the adhesive on gog. It took months to dry! Maybe I slathered it on too thick, but it made me hate weldbond!! I use clear silicone as adhesive now.
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 2 жыл бұрын
A lot depends on the environment that its in but Weldbond is notorious for slow drying when used in a GOG. Silicone contains solvents and it continues to give off solvents while curing which isn't good for your health long term. You are better off using Mac Glue and avoid using large pieces of glass to adhere down because that will slow down the curing process as well.

A weldbond wash is really suitable to glass on glass, anything with a texture just exacerbates the situation further especially when its Wedi board and acrylic paint. The best way is to adhere your pieces down correctly to avoid the need for a Weldbond wash which is another step and is not 100% successful all the time. @TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 2 жыл бұрын
I have no doubt it would work in some instances however it would be quite limiting. You would need to be careful as your pieces can move and your grout lines would fill up with glue so no grouting, some may see that as a bonus, also for complex mosaics it would be a nightmare working that way. :)
@KMF3
@KMF3 2 жыл бұрын
@@TreasuryRoad once it dries nothing will move at all. Makes the whole process much easier. I'm not sure what it would not work with.
@TreasuryRoad
@TreasuryRoad 2 жыл бұрын
@@KMF3 That is correct once it dries, however if someone is wanting to grout to enhance the mosaic this wouldn't be an option. If its a mosaic that is quite complex you couldn't risk the pieces moving around while you're working on it especially if the pieces are a neat fit. If you were to drop something on it like another piece of tess then the others pieces would move which would slow things down and would be quite frustrating placing it all back together manually. Also your tess would be covered in glue which I think would take away from the look of the mosaic piece. An outdoor mosaic where glue is laid down to a depth of 3mm assuming you are using stained glass may have an issue yellowing. With a glass on glass piece you would need to get out any air bubbles and ensure the glue covers evenly across the bottom of each tessera so you don't see glue marks. No doubt I think there is a possibility in using this technique however I think it will depend on the project and the look that people are after. :)
@KMF3
@KMF3 2 жыл бұрын
@@TreasuryRoad I've used it with mod podge 50/50 water. It dries completely clear and flat. You can grout after it dries and it doesn't move the pieces around if you are careful to pour it slowly. In this project, I have very transparent gold glass and I have already grouted part of it (the sun and a sunflower in yellow grout, but I want to grout the rest with black grout. So my mistake is I didn't do the Welbond wash before I grouted the two areas. When that grout dries completely, do you think it is possible to still Welbond Wash what I haven't grouted yet? I hope this is something you might know about. I appreciate your opinion. Thank you.

HI Bev. Many use Weldbond as a sealant but never for outside especially on wood. When you dilute the Weldbond it penetrates into the wood where it will stay, if the piece is inside its not in contact with moisture unless its in a hot house and for homes to get that much moisture in there would be a greater health concern. There are better penetrating sealers around and waterproofing membranes as well its just Welbond has been used for years as a sealant because it was convenient and very accessible, if I were doing an outdoor piece it would not be my first choice. :)

@@bevturquoise4651 Im not a Wedbond fan either. Anything wood outside is always a risk for longevity, you need to weigh up if its worth it or not. You will need to research on the sealant as each country is different and what adhesive you use along with the environment will also need to be taken into account. A few phone calls to companies as well or reading the manufactures technical data sheets will be needed. I cannot say this or that is a particular sealant to use as I dont use any wood outside. :)
