I have a question for you. I have had tinnitus for over 30 years. Since having stapedectomy? On both ears (done individually one year apart). It is a constant, high pitched hum, it only changes in intensity or how loud it is. I have recently discovered that the prosthetic in my ears are good for 20? Years. Seems to me from my experience that they should reassess that. Is there anything that could help with my situation? 😊

I had depression/anxiety 3years ago. I developed tinnitus from the first day onwards. The wonder drug is Amitriptyline Hydrochloride 25 mg. HS alongwith Melatonin 3g HS. The depression is gone but the monolateral tinnitus of 1KHz. frequency at 35dB HL. FM tone low volume static. The problem arose in working condition where I thought I would lose my job. I was very disoriented then with fear complex. My ENT surgeon kept on telling me that it's due to the blood thinner I was consuming Tab Atorvastatin 10 mg OD. I didn't agree. I have mild hyperacusis.

I suffered chronic sinusitis & Tinnitus since age 5. Given antibiotics, which never helped, for years. At age 50, I tried Olive Leaf nasal spray twice a day for 30 days. My sinuses opened completely & Tinnitus disappeared & has never returned. All that grief over a fungal condition that doctors treated as a bacterial condition. Olive Leaf is a God send. I highly recommend it.

I wish I had heard all of this over a decade ago back when everyone from multiple ENTs, audiologists and neurologists told me I would just have to "live with it". They knew I had no hearing loss and that I had severe head and neck pain and stiffness but never looked into any of it. I owe youtube channels and doctors like these everything because I went directly to my ENT and neurologist and said "test me for this". While they didn't offer much support afterward they at least acknowledged that my tinnitus is a combo of stress-induced, sinus congestion and craniocervical. I am now receiving treatment for all of these and can finally find a sense of control. Thank you.

Firstly, I did learn some things watching this THANK YOU and happy there are Dr. Golenhofen’s in the world. Imagine going to multiple docs, specialists, over decades, spending thousands of dollars, only to have no answers, no treatments. And the same diagnosis- you have Tinnitus and there’s no treatment so “come back in 6 mos for a follow up.” It would be fantastic to finally see a doc that actually understands T and the impact it has on the patient both mentally and physically. A quiet room is torture for me. I must have noise 24/7 to drown out the crickets. I just gave up and came to terms that I will die with stereo crickets singing in my head. I’m almost in tears as I write this. It’s just so horrible.

I've listened to this 12 times. I can't hear this enough because I know for a fact that in my case it started with anxiety and depression. I went to sleep crying about an extremely stressful situation I was in and woke up to this. It sickens me to say the word. I lived with it for 30+ years it was undetectable. I've also suffered from severe anxiety for 30 + years but never focused on the noise. Anxiety has gotten worse over the years. I have had some extra stressful issues overv past year, so the anxiety is ramped up with hyperstimulation. I decided to listen for the sound 3 weeks ago, and it got louder 😢. Now I'm trying to calm down defocus and put this genie back in the bottle. I am proof that if you defocus even when stressed it will become undetectable. I wish I had never listened or read some peoples comments. ENT, audiologist completely overlook anxiety and stress as an attributing factor. Most just want money!

Just tell yourself the sound is the refrigerator or a/c. Do not focus on the sound or even think on it. Each day say out loud “By Christ Jesus’ stripes I am healed.” Say it until you believe it down in your spirit. That is how I got healed supernaturally of some kind of seizures. Went on for several mos. Each time I declared “By Christ’s stripes I am healed!” The last time was the worst. My brain felt like it was partially cut off. I exclaimed I was healed by Christ’s stripes, heard a pop & felt an electricity like feeling flow from one side of my brain to the other. I was free. Before that I listened to Scriptures on healing for 6 wks or more. My faith exploded! I knew Jesus was going to heal me of this large possibly cancerous growing mole. I ran to the bathroom mirror & saw that mole SHRINK before my eyes. I need healing in other areas & now I must renew my mind thru his healing word again. “Faith comes by hearing the Word of God.”

Thank you for this very informative video. I have suffered with tinnitus for more than 20 years. All of my primary care physicians and dentists have blown me off and the several ENTs tested my hearing and told me that my hearing loss is not that bad and I just need to live with it. I only have one side. I can tell you stress, anxiety, and tight neck muscles make it worse. I am 71 now and no one will help me.... I have worked on meditation, and neck stretching. And I have just try to ignore it. I believe it's my brain distraction trying to protect me. Please keep working on it and educate US doctors. Very sad how many of us suffer from this.

As you all know lack of vitamin D3 can contribute to weak bones which can also lead to added thickening. Osteoporosis can affect many parts of your skeletal system, including your skull. Osteoporosis of your skull can cause pressure on certain nerves causing tinnitus. I’m not certain but that’s what I heard can be one of the causes.

I have had tinnitus since the age of four, am now 77 & it is constant. I have had balance problems for over six decades,often severe,with anxiety, nausea ,the room spinning & falling to the floor unable to get up. When shopping,if I look up at shelves,I immediately feel dizzy , I cope by looking up well away from where I need to focus. It started at age four when I felt severe pain in my left ear,the pain lasted a long time, afterwards,I was left with tinnitus that was intense, loud,but would change suddenly from one octave to another & it is active 24 hours a day. Shortly after it began I started having repeated ear infections to the left ear,these became chronic, I would have a nurse visit everyday, giving me oral liquid pennicillin , I was also losing my hearing,having to sit in the front of class at all times & my balance was affected from that time as well. I was fitted with a body hearing aid in the 1950's. The chronic infections were as regular as a woman's menstrual cycle,right up to the age of 38 when I had a tympanoplasty operation, was told that I couldn't have any further ear operations. After the operation, a nurse came to my room,she asked me to dress, she left the room,I got off the bed & immediately fell to the floor on my left side - the balance was obviously affected by the operation. On one follow-up visit to my consultant, I reported feeling quite unwell, I was found to have high blood pressure, he prescribed blood thinning medication(Praxiline)for the ear. I also suffered depression attempting to take my life,not realising that all my life I had really been stressed out with my ear problems,a period of personal introspection gave me the insight to cope better & change my outlook. I cannot communicate in a social situation, any unwanted sound stops me hearing what I need to hear & I cannot discern the direction of any sound. I wasn't told anything on what to do on leaving hospital, I couldn't pluck up the courage to touch the ear,after a week I touched it, felt something, began to pull on it, kept pulling,a dressing about an inch wide appeared until my arm was outstretched,I felt weirdly imbalanced. Following that both the hearing in the other ear deteriated & so too with the balance, diagnosed with Meniere's disease, took medication to no effect,then undertook vestibular therapy, which helped a bit. Since my ear operation I have had constant tinnitus,with pain in the ear, the balance disorder & I am hearing aid dependent. I have been told I have sensorineural deafness,but also it must be conductive too, because when I last had a tuning fork test, I couldn't detect any sound & my choclear is afected from the inner ear disorder. I can only have one aid,cannot wear one in the left ear, the ossicles are long gone after collapsing from further perforations, the mastoid cavity is open to the wind- cold & are a contributory cause of imbalance. You have,as they say, to learn to live with it & that is a cop out for the medics,as they don't need to do anything at all then. They also say not to drink coffee etc, I have had tinnitus 73 years & had it so long before I started drinking coffee. The N.H.s treats deaf people condescendingly, as though they don't posess any insight to their own problems, I had to wait over 5 years to go from an analogue to digital aid & have been promised a blue-tooth aid when available. Perhaps I might pass on well before I get offered an appointment to get one fitted.

This video has helped me enormously to prepare for my 1st upcoming appt with an audiogist followed by the ENT. My unilateral high pitch tinnitus followed and ear and throat infection with middle ear fluid per the PCP doctor. It took 5 months to get an appt with an ENT for my 1st screening! I have always been sensitive to everyday sounds and sound really sets my nerves on edge. I never used to have the TV always going or any of that. I loved silence as it calmed me. Now my world is never quiet. I always have to have music on or even the TV to mask the tinnitus. Bedtime is terrible. Thank you for this excellent empowering channel.

Great information! Just wanted to add a couple of things that are not mentioned in this video as it may be helpful to someone reading the comments. Somatic causes were mentioned- TMJ and neck muscles- but I wanted to expand on this a bit. I have had a few patients for whom a hypertoned sternocleidomastoid (SCM) was the root of their issue; after treating this muscle to release tension, their tinnitus was reduced or gone. I had one patient who had suffered for a couple of years and now he no longer has it. Secondly, there has been a connection shown between magnesium levels and tinnitus- supplementation with a good bioavailable form can help. Note that Mg levels may show as normal in a blood test, but may be deficient at the intracellular level. This is because magnesium is extremely vital in so many metabolic functions- when your plasma levels fall, magnesium is taken out of your red blood cells to maintain the needed level in the blood- in the same way that low calcium levels causes calcium release from the skeleton. The last thing is certain medications- notably ibuprofen, which can cause tinnitus if overused.

@WhatWouldHouseDo I think I have somatic tinnitus possibly caused by the SCM muscle on my right side. Is it difficult to massage the SCM muscle given it's proximity to large blood vessels? Do most massage therapists have this training (SCM massage)? I have pain deep in the soft spot just under the ear lobe, behind the jaw. Could this be the SCM or some other muscle? Thank you for your comment!
@whatwouldhousedo5136
@whatwouldhousedo5136 2 жыл бұрын
@@aeanderson8491 Hi- SCM is not difficult to massage, and most therapists should be able to perform it. Yes, it is close to some vessels (which is why working on both sides of the anterior neck is not done) but it should not cause problems to work there. Something that can be a challenge is maintaining a grip on SCM while you work- it tends to slip down out of your fingers. The pain behind your jaw could be related to SCM due to its attachment points on the mastoid process (the bony part behind that soft spot) but there are other structures that could be involved such as the styloid process of the temporal bone, to which several things attach.

I believe the modalities are pretty well defined in this video. There is no cure. The best approach any tinnitus patient can take is to embrace the noise in their head as 'normal' and accept it as part of who they are. When you fight tinnitus, it wins. My tinnitus which can be acute at times is most variable waking up from sleep. I can wake up to very mild tinnitus or raging tinnitus. I find in fact a correlation between the intensity of my dreams, if I remember my dreams and I sometimes do and wake up in a disturbed state. Pretty clear different brain centers are engaged based upon my changing dreams...may even correlate on some level to cortisol levels. There is nothing any of these doctors can do to address the variable nature of my dreams which promote more or less tinnitus. Doctors cannot control the dreams of their patients. My condition is not uncommon. Its good to know some of the cause and effect but very frustrating there is no cure. Very, very few grow out of tinnitus. I had no tinnitus throughout my life. I contracted it late in life.

A lot of very interesting information here. The problem I'm having is that my tinnitus started out of nowhere a few days after taking the covid vaccine. It built up from nothing over the course of 5 days after it. Having seen an ENT and psychologist I've experienced a brick wall in terms of any conversation about it's effects. I certainly wasn't stressed out before the symptoms started, but having been working in professional audio field for decades (not in loud music situations I might add) I have not been able to hear well enough to do my job and consequently have lost my business. On top of that, living in Germany myself, having not had the second vaccine dose, I am now banned from most recreational places, from cafes, restaurants, cinemas, gymns and so forth. Given all these losses, I most certainly am stressed out now and becoming very depressed. Not even having a doctor take notes or ask anything about my experience with the vaccine seems incredibly closed minded to me, not to mention dangerous. I don't expect a video discussion on the topic because it'll most likely end up censored (yes, big part of the problem). I am in total state of despair with it all.

@@MrMelancobar Decompression Treatment has reduced tinnitus by more than 80%: from constant to rarely noticing it. The sessions at the chiropractor were twice a week for two months, now reduced to once a week. The time on the computerized decompression table has reduced from 30 minutes to ten. There is no discomfort; it ramps up gradually. New x-ray showed amazing improvement of intervertebral disc space at C4-5, C5-6, and C6-7. I still need work on C3-4 for neural foraminal narrowing(nerves from spinal chord are squeezed)and osteophytosis(bone spurs). At Monday's Dr. appointment I learned that I had regained half an inch in height. I think it is important when the Dr. and chiropractor show you the x-rays , CT scans, and MRIs, so that you can see for yourself.

For me it started after chemo for cancer. I have talked to a large number of people who developed tinnitus during or after chemo therapy. It is always there but I have gotten reasonably good at just ignoring it. I am a musician and had some tinnitus before the chemo but it is much worse after chemo. Chemo also did major damage to my once hyper healthy heart. Still beats dying of cancer.

I went to an ENT a few months after my tinnitus started in 2020. My hearing test showed no hearing loss. The doctor spent less than 5 minutes with me. Took a half second to look in each ear and then basically said that this is my new life and sent me on my way. utterly useless even after explaining that I thought it was related to neck strain and that I could change the noise by manipulating my neck, jaw, and massaging the muscles in my the back and sides of my head. Thank you so much for this discussion! I look forward to you doing a 2nd video in the future. I have fortunately not had a big problem with typical tinnitus, namely ringing in the ears. I have experienced pulsatile tinnitus on and off during the past 8 or 10 years. At first it was very loud and kept me awake in the middle of the night. Around the same time I was experiencing vertigo, but only when I was lying in bed at night and the vertigo would occur when I changed position from one side to the other. Looking back on it, I believe that both conditions started after having a root canal and then experiencing a lot of TMJ problems because of the stress on my jaw during multiple sessions with the endodontist, followed by misalignment of my jaws after the crown was installed. But at that time I didn't understand what had caused the problem. Accupuncture and cranial-sacral bodywork helped some, but it took years - and a lot of work on my part to unlearn my habit of clenching my teeth to check on whether my teeth and jaws were in or out of alignment. But the pulsing in my ear, which I only noticed in the middle of the night, was much more worrying to me. I had read a story online about a teenager describing this to a doctor and getting rushed into surgery because it indicated some type of leaking or faulty blood vessel in the base of the brain or perhaps the precursor to a stroke. But when I went back to look for the article to read it again, I could never find anything like it. My doctors and dentist and bodyworkers didn't have any explanations or solutions for what I was describing. So for quite a few years I was worried there was something seriously wrong! Just a couple years ago I discovered some KZbin videos that talked about pulsatile tinnitus as mainly a nutritional deficiency, so I focused on balancing my intake of calcium, magnesium and potassium. But all along I have also continued to work on better neck and head alignment, especially at night sleeping on my side. The pulsatile tinnitus now is much less annoying and doesn't even happen on a regular basis. When it does occur for a few days or even a few weeks, I don't worry about it and it is mild enough that it doesn't keep my awake. But your video is the first I've seen that describes how jaw clenching, TMJ problems, and neck alignment problems can all lead to tinnitus. I am so thrilled to hear these explanations and they definitely fit with my experience as I look back on it all now, over the years! I am going to continue to use subtle bodywork techniques I've learned to do for myself and continue to watch out for my habit of jaw clenching when I am under stress. Thank you and I look forward to learning more from your future videos!

Thank you for this podcast. I’m always searching for new answers. My bilateral tinnitus began suddenly after a total hysterectomy in 1993. I was given very high doses of estrogen in the hospital which caused a host of problems- migraines, tinnitus and other devastating side effects. My tinnitus became permanent. The pitch varies only when I have congestion in my sinuses. Sometimes it pulses in one ear. Sleep deprivation was devastating to my life. My anxiety went through the roof. I never experienced any hearing loss in fact my hearing became more acute. Loud noises bother me. Almost 30 years has gone by and my life has suffered greatly with this condition. I now have advanced degenerative osteoarthritis in my neck, jaw hands and feet. I tried the TMJ route with no success. No pain in my jaw. Used a night guard for several years with no change. I’m left with depending on sleeping pills and anti anxiety medications as well as anti depressants to cope. Any suggestions on which direction to go would be much appreciated. I'm rapidly approaching my 8th decade and have had tinnitus since I was about 6 years old - initially intermittently but continuously since I was in my 20s. It now resembles the hissing of a cistern that is just about to shut off. Both my parents had tinnitus in later life. My mother coped with it easily but my father never did come to terms with it. I'm quite happy with it as I can completely ignore it for most of the day and am not in any way distressed by it when it impinges on my consciousness. I guess I am lucky that I had it from an early age as it was natural to learn to live with it in a way that would perhaps be more difficult for those with later onset.

@@garyfarm well, I do have something to report. I hope this isn't too much information, but here's the story: I've had HSV for a long time, and as I've aged it rears its ugly head more often presumably because my body is winding down. For example, 10 years ago I had an outbreak maybe a few times a year, all during high stress times. I started to get blisters in my right ear, and my rheumatologist put me on acyclovir as both a treatment and prophylaxis for HSV (he thought the breakouts were all the same even though they would be in different areas of my body like my ear, finger, genitals, toes, etc.. ). Since I had been taking acyclovir for about 7 years, I thought it wise to take a break, and see what happened. It took a month or so after I weaned myself off and I finally got a severe outbreak. Then I got covid, and was very ill. That lasted about 2 weeks, and lo and behold, the severe outbreak disappeared as I recovered. I decided not to go back on acyclovir, thinking my immune system being ramped up for covid also beat HSV. About 6 weeks post covid an outbreak happened, but very mild. Then 4 weeks later, another outbreak, this time worse. For the first time I made the connection: the outbreaks were timed perfectly with menstruation. And to boot, the tinnitus I suffer with gets severe along with the outbreaks. Both the outbreaks and tinnitus gets better 7 days after day one of my cycle. Well, I started taking l-lysine 2 weeks ago and with this month's cycle I have no outbreak, and the tinnitus isn't as severe as it usually is. I'll keep taking lysine and laying off arginine during this time of the month to see if this pattern will continue. BTW, I haven't taken acyclovir in about 5 weeks! Pretty cool.

Good luck to you and never give up looking for relief.

@@nrcmoreira He is 100% deaf in one ear from sudden hearing loss and I am sure anxiety plays a big part in his tinnitus too. He is convinced there is no help because he can't use a hearing aid. He doesn't want the cochlear surgery because he doesn't think it will work, no one in our area does it and our insurance won't cover it. I am trying to find ways to help him and eventually I hope something will be helpful.

Just discovered your channel & subscribed 😀 My daughter went through cancer treatments close to 8 years ago when she was 9, without mastectomy though due to tumor in her naso-pharyngeal, so the onset of her tinnitus has been another complication in the long list of long term effects. Grateful she is with us today ... & Thank-you for providing this valuable content!! Will be awaiting your next content share to keep learning. 🤓

Great discussion between doctors who care about patient outcome. The striving for better understanding to develop better treatment protocols, without reliance on medications, is so refreshingly old fashioned. I have all 3 of tinnitus described, quite an orchestra at times. Really appreciate the admitting how important the patient perspective is when better informed, ultimately together able to diagnose type and tailor treatment with ownership, empowering just what we tinnitus patients need. cheers

@mannyk6077mine is better when I move my jaw to the left. Which pushes the entire neck muscles out that way. I have issues with c0-c1 and c5-c6. This is the cause of my issues and ice been doing everything to avoid any surgery in the area. Working on neck exercises every day hoping for improvement, but my neck ligaments are damaged and won't hold these structures in place so it's definitely an uphill better. Never stop looking for answers and don't let any Dr's gaslight you.

Incredibly informational and immediately explains my symptoms although I have followed many recommendations on how to deal with it, they rarely do anything. I had dental work and had 1/4 of my teeth removed from the upper left jaw which obviously causes an imbalance, and I only have one set of upper/lower molars to grind my food on one side of my mouth so this is clearly another imbalance. When I complained about this to my dentist office, they simply told me it’s part of the aging. OMG are they under informed!! Thank you thank you for this wonderful interview. I have the 3rd . Damaged from swimming and diving. Had surgery on my ear. Now the first and second conditions. This is the problem. What are you thinking from ? Are you giving attention to the sound . Which is a loop. That is the issue. When you think from silence. Triggers are as said. Dr.Joseph Murphy and Dr.Joe Despenza point out how your subconscious is working. Things you can try to heal yourself while you see the doctor to deal with your issues. I say this because it is all happening within you and how you preserves your world/life style. I am just suggesting to investigate this information and when you realize healing . So we can help many to find there healing . Have a peaceful life !

I have had increasing tinnitus since an 1980 bronchitis with earaches in both ears. It’s getting worse and my oncologist and ENT specialist believe my chemo treatments have exasperated it. Have also had reduction of hearing on both sides of the spectrum. I’m being fitted for ear aids next week. My abdominal wall was seeded after a 2018 hysterectomy. No lymph node or other organ involvement and slow growing cancer. 🙏🏼❤️Manageable.

This was extremely helpful to me as someone who has experienced tinnitus for many years. I assumed it had started due to working jobs that caused hearing loss but your explanations regarding a somatic basis makes a lot of sense. I have developed some degradation in a couple of vertebrae in my neck, presumably from high impact jobs, and have also developed a habit of clenching and grinding my teeth due to stress, anxiety and exhaustion, going to a dentist to correct my teeth as I have begun to damage them. During lockdown in 2020, I began drinking a magnesium powder in order to sleep well, and extended that to during the day because it helped with a sense of well being and relaxation while progressing a high stress job. I don’t think it reduced the tinnitus, however i continue to drink it and it does help with remaining more calm and relaxed while I progress with this high stress job. Thank you so much for generously sharing your knowledge. I would be interested to learn more from you both.

Having worked from an early age in various very constant noisy factories, I found it becomes noisy in silence. ie, new in one noisy place, found a person who was not using ear protection, cold hear me , but I couldn’t hear him. He was accustomed to it and auto cancelled the background sounds. My life has been in that situation, so, my tinnitus is , in old age , very noisy. So my only way is to absorb my mind in music and without respite it is a big problem. I have to undo my mindset. No so easy to get to grips with. Like wipe the recording, scrub my memory. I am a logic thinker, therefore it is easy, no, it’s too much recall of events when searching for long habitual recorded noise. Auto function of our brain is not easy to cut back on, in age we try to remember most things. The tinnitus is not getting better. Even tho ‘. I am occupied and always in thought or work of some type.

Thank you, this has been very helpful to me. About a year ago, I had a crown put on one of my molars and given meds that afternoon, I went home as usual, went to bed. At the very moment of consciousness the next morning I had horrible tinnitus on the same side as the procedure. I went straight back to that dentist, another dentist, an ENT doctor who ALL denied that the procedure had anything to do with the tinnitus. They just shook their heads and looked at me with a blank stare when I asked them point blank if the procedure could possibly have been a factor. It was like being a Twilight Zone movie to have each of them boldly tell me there was no relation. I felt like I was being lied to. Then I saw an Endodontist to for CT imaging, which they said found nothing, again, they shrugged and I left the office, angered, disappointed and had a few tearful days to follow. Although still disappointed and angry, I've learned to ignore it, but this is a topic in need of discussing.

My tinnitus started the day after I found blood in my spittle. The blood turned out to be a cancer tumor in the left side of my throat that was subsequently dealt with, but the tinnitus remained. What’s useful to know about the cancer episode is that it came two years after a marital breakup that literally caused me a lot of distress. I did have ringing in both ears until recently, now it is mostly just in my left ear. Last week, I had a tooth removed on the upper right side that was abscessed. The ringing in the right ear diminished considerably right after that. My tinnitus doesn’t change with head movement or jaw clenching. It is just a singular, high pitched sound that does not really bother me. I do have hearing loss above 14KHz, but I do distinctly hear every note on a piano.

So if you have Hypothyroidism you might need a change in medication such as adding a T3 medication such as Cytomel also called Liothyronine.
