In this video me and my buddy Garrett ride through the trees at Mt Bachelor and stop to talk about tree safety and tree wells. It was an incredible day of exploring the mountain and finding fun ways through the trees. Tree safety is an important topic especially when riding on a new mountain.

I knew about the dangers of avalanches but never realized riding through trees could be so dangerous. I think it helps to have an avalanche pack with the shovel and transmitter, etc on you when you're riding trees as well.

Thank you so much for bringing awareness to the tree wells i had never heard of them untill now. I started snowboarding 3months ago and I've been working on riding near the trees and I'm always riding alone. I'll definitely be more cautious and I'll look for more information on how to get out of one. thank you so much.

Another tip for avoiding tree wells, never make a turn close to a tree well on the uphill side as the snow could collapse down into the well. If you have to turn close to a well, do it after on the down side.

Sweet video! When you use the pole for your camera, have you weighted the handle area? With my pole (made from an old hockey stick) the end where my gopro sits is way heavier than the handle, so it gets awkward to carry after a while. Do you know any ways to fix this or make it better? Thanks!

I'm a fairly new snowboarder (about 3 season) the first time I heard of tree well was this year after stumbling some KZbin video about tree well. I'm somewhat scared now cus I. Remember this year I had just started some tree runs everytime a good inches of snow hit the local ski resort. I usually do it by myself too. There are times that I would hit a tree and fall on a well but never up side down so I guess I'm pretty damn lucky and would always shrug it off. I'm such a newbie 😫 I'm definitely not doing tree run without a friend anymore.

Backcountry guides have told me that wells around smaller trees (8-10 ft) can actually be much more dangerous than larger trees. So watch the smaller trees too when skiing or riding in a deeper snowpack. Also try to avoid making your turns directly above a tree. If you fall, the likelihood of ending up in a well is much higher.

Hey Kevin, do you use an external microphone or the GoPro internal mic ? Your sound is super clear for a GoPro camera, chatting and even riding ! Or maybe you mount it with the Frame (no case) ?
@SnowboardProCamp
@SnowboardProCamp 8 жыл бұрын
+En Vadrouille I'll check out some external mics for sure. I've just been using the GoPro with the open door backing. It's hard to find a setup where you can get good sound and not worry about getting everything wet.
@guiguilepagna
@guiguilepagna 8 жыл бұрын
+SnowboardProCamp I know man ! Audio is terrible with full case. But then with open case, it gets risky for your GoPro (your sound is still pretty good amazingly). Here's what I've been thinking for best sound : recording the sound (when talking) separately on your iPhone with earplugs ! (From the mic of the Apple earplugs). You'll have your earplugs on the screen sure, but what's wrong with that when snowboarding ?? I'll give it a try before the end of the season. Tell me what do you think of that. Cheers from France.

+SnowboardProCamp Don't come here in Aus... I have been snowboarding here before and its pretty ordinary, the runs are short the mountains are small and there is little snow... On the other hand it is a great experience to learn how to ride in these conditions... although it is challenging and not as fun (imo) (I am doing all my comparisons here to places in Japan such as Hakuba where I go instead of Aus..)
@dreadiedude
@dreadiedude 8 жыл бұрын
+SnowboardProCamp It depends what type of riding you're after really. NZ has big open alpine expanses and ZERO trees on the resorts. Australia has abit of alpine stuff, but riding through eucalypt trees is an experience unique to Australia. Personally I would recommend Perisher in Australia over the other Aus resorts, but I can't make any recommendations on NZ resorts other than the few around Queenstown/Wanaka seem to be popular.The snow is abit hit and miss, both in NZ and Aus. Late July to early September is best in Aus. There can be periods with little to no snow, but it can also get some large dumps (20-50cm) in good storms.Some backcountry on the main range (Kosciuszko National Park in NSW) is a lot of fun too.

Hey Kevin, thanks for all the great content. Currently I live in England and i can only get to the mountains for a total of about 1 week a year. I am on a very limited budget but have spotted a board which would suit me for under 200 dollars. is it worth buying it considering that I still need to buy bindings and boots, or would I be better off just renting my kit every time?
@ELCNUmorFnaMehT
@ELCNUmorFnaMehT 8 жыл бұрын
What board is it that you saw? Definitely buy your board and other equipment if you can get the chance, it beats renting equipment by a mile. As it's coming to the end of the season the prices will have already started dropping so you may be able to find some good bindings and boots at a decent price.

+Tom Appelboam I'd say it's definitely a good first board, plus if you are leaning more to the park/jib side of snowboarding but still want something to take all over the rest of the mountain then it's a great choice. I've always found that you can find DC boards for dirt cheap if you look in which you will get A LOT for your money's worth from them (I've got two DC MLFs).

+Tom Appelboam The cheapest bindings I can find on the net are some Rome United bindings on Surfdome for £66. I don't really have any experience with them so you may have to do your research on them or if anyone on here is kind enough to give their opinions and experiences on them. You may be able to find cheaper on EBay but in terms of online shops that is the cheapest I can see so far.
