Definitely not made up, this used to be how the European elite travelled before Aeroplanes became fast, comfortable and reliable. The most luxurious sleeper-wagons and trains were run by the CIWL, founded in 1876. The most famous was of course the Orient Express, (other famous lines were the Nord Express and Sud Express) but this was pretty much the way to travel internationally in Europe around the turn of the century. You could, given you had the funds, travel between Europe's larger cities on trains at close to this level of luxury (without the modern amenities like Air conditioning) and on to some exotic destinations like Constantinople, Baghdad, CIWL even ran trains to Vladivostok and Manchuria for a brief moment before the Russian revolution. Of course, some particularly ostentatious people and heads of state would own their own railcars or even their own trains. (Like having a private jet rather than flying first class with Emirates or Qatar Airways) Quite a few royal carriages have been preserved across Europe. That train is a living piece of history, it's not just the luxury you pay for but the fact that the train is a century old, the experience of travelling the way it was in the 1920s. And for those that say 20.0000 $ for 28 hours is too much for a suite, a First Class suite on Emirates starts at 7.000 $ for a 6-7 hour flight.

Had to read that twice, there's a Halifax in England as well, I knew of the tradition in the USA of having British towns and city names but didn't realise there were similar ones in Canada too. Just read and it isn't directly named after the town but from the Earl of Halifax, who was Earl of our Halifax and it is why he had the name, which it makes it even more fascinating. Halifax is a pretty small town next to my larger city, rather excited it has this.

Loved this video--I have seen Orient Express videos before, but never a room so elegant as this one and having traveled from Calais to Venice by motorcoach and visiting all the sites along the way, seeing the scenery and you and Millie sharing the luxury of your experience is wonderful. I have Eurailed thru Europe, choosing the first class option, but always traveled by day and not in a sleeper, just in a cabin. I met the most amazing people along the way--memorable was a man on my first Eurail trip in '87 from England who bought me a beer as I was traveling from Como to Luzern in the older St. Gotthard tunnel. We chatted the whole way. My favorite vista on that trip is the town of Wassen, right after the train exited the tunnel it circles the village and its iconic church so one sees the church from all sides as the train used the circle route to descend into the Reuss river valley towards Luzern. Given you crossed into Italy in Chiasso you went thru the St. Gotthard route as well, and I believe the alps along the way are the most stunning in Europe as one passes Altdorf and heads south thru the Reuss River Valley, then goes from German speaking Switzerland to Italian speaking Switzerland thru the St. Gotthard tunnel, amazing in itself that a mountain tunnel changes a culture and language. I took four tours of Europe, in '77, '82, '84 and '17, but the three Eurail trips I took were special too. I also worked in Bologna Italy for a few weeks in '95. Alas, my newlywed wife could not join me because my trip was scheduled suddenly, but my daughter right now is in Siena doing graduate study in Italian at the University there. She like you loves history, and when she returns to the US in August she will start work to complete her masters in International Studies. My career was in tourism which is what allowed me so much travel, especially business travel, and now I do it just for leisure after more than 41 years in guest service. Hope to watch more of your videos!

Thank you for fulfilling my lifelong dream❤ I have been obsessed with that journey since the first time I saw the original movie. The way you (Millie😊) filmed and narrated your trip was so interesting. You give so much detail, including walking outside the trains, that I feel like I have armchair traveled with you.❤❤Cheers to both you and Millie🎉

That was fabulous! Some years ago (I think early 1980’s) and when the English portion of the train was still called the Venice Simplon Orient Express, I purchased a ticket (I splurged!) to ride on it from London to Bournemouth with a lovely meal each way and I thought that was amazingly opulent! I remember wishing I could go for the full ride but that (and remains) far beyond my budget!

Just looked it up: The "classic" 5 nights trip on the Venice Simplon Orient Express from Paris to Istanbul in a Grand Suite like yours is GBP 55.000 per person. With all due respect: But a 9 nights transatlantic voyage from Hamburg to New York onboard Queen Mary 2 in a "Q1" Grand Duplex Apartment with 209m² is HALF that price ... As much as I would like to take a trip on the Orient Express ... but THIS is WAY too much money. But a great video nonetheless. Thanks for uploading and sharing your experience.

QM2 which takes 2,695 people vs 174 on the OE hardly comparable mate.

@@ITSaPendragon You realize that the ship is huge while the train is very small by comparison. I would happily make the trade.

rarity and scale -the train carries about 200 people, the Cunarder takes about 2500 -the QM2 runs the transatlantic line about 12 times a year the VSOE traverses the OE Paris-Istanbul route about once a year. if you want to specifically do the actual OE route thats your only one-train option since the demise of the actual OE.

A great film of a wonderful journey. I took my partner to Venice for a significant-number birthday over 20 years ago and we came back on the Orient Express (in those days via the Dolomites, Brenner Pass and Innsbruck). For the first and only time in our lives, we looked at the Brunch menu and said, "Not lobster again!" LOL

I managed to catch a glimpse of this incredible train while I was waiting mine in VE Mestre Station, Italy, district of Venice. It took a short break so I had the chance to take a look at the inside from the many windows. I could see the expensive wood finitures, the Kitchen wagon who was working on dinner, and some passengers cabins. People around me were taking pictures and then, I still wonder how, two Japanese ladies donning two lovely yukatas came out to have a brief walk and limber up their tired legs. It looked like an otherwordly experience!
