Thanks Boyd for everything that you do here on youtube! I watch always every week...great modeling tips! I'm going to embark on building the refit 1:350 enterprise...any ideas people?

Awesome build Boyd. If I may offer a suggestion, take some fine grit sandpaper to the backside of the Officers lounge so that the light will be more diffused which will offer more of a glowing monitor effect. It was really killing the effect when you had the flashlight shining through, I know the LEDs will be dimmer but they may still transfer more of a source light look than a subtle glow.

Now that I've finished my rec deck, I see your video with those neat decals for doing the whole thing. AARRGGHH! Sigh. Oh, well.

Don't feel bad Darrell. It happens to me all the time. Just think you did get to experience doing the painting :)

I find your instruction to be extremely helpful! It would be a beneficial addition if you were to get yourself a separate video monitor hooked to your camera so you could see when your demonstrated example is out of frame. Either that or an assistant. Thanks again for the great instruction.

I like the Rec.Deck design but if I may give a tip. Wrapping it with Scotch [Invisible/Clear] tape tends to lose it's viscosity over time & will come off eventually. I recommend something like Avery adhesive clear sheets for the job. The reason I mentioned this is I used to laminate my art projects with Avery clear and they have held up over 20 years now like my drawing of TMP 1701 Enterprise. BTW: if your method works then don't change a thing, still looks great.

The sad part is a lot of us would love to have seen how you do the detail paintwork in the lounge. Just a brush? Liquid Mask>? Foil?

I know you love this putty but the formula changed in 2019 - I bought that putty based on your recommendation and after I found it to be not as reliable as you said, I ordered Tamiya white putty.

hey boyd, have you ever thought of doing books on all these beautiful builds? i mean a how to kinda thing, for the people like me who have little lighting experience, and little sci fi modeling experience. ive always built automotive modeling subjects, but now ive taken in interest in sci fi, especially the enterprise so you could have one book on the enterprise, with an assembly section, lighting section, ect ect..... just another random thought. it would be cool tho. keep up the killer work! cheers bryan
@TrekWorks10 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have considered it and am working on a guide to Sci Fi modeling which will cover the subjects you mentioned and more. Books take time to write though so it will be awhile.

Hi Boyd, Did you use the original glass for the Officers Lounge and Arboretum? if so how did you do that cause the photo etched window panes are in the way...or did you make your own glass?

how did you put in the clear plastic for the officers lounge? I used the paragrafix photo etch part and then tried to put in the clear but could not get it in to perfectly hug the inside curve of the officer lounge windows. I removed the clear to start over again. How can I do this correctly and make it look good? Thanks! by the way love the channel you have been a great inspiration and help to my model building!
@TrekWorks8 жыл бұрын
I use clear thin sheet polystyrene for the officers lounge and the arboretum windows. It's only .015 thickness so it will bend and conform to curved shapes really well. It's also very clear like real glass with no blurring effect.
@Dobinj778 жыл бұрын
+TrekWorks that is what i used but there is a large gap between the window frame and the clear plastic part. what technique did you use to secure the clear plastic?
@TrekWorks8 жыл бұрын
I recall that I kept trimming the clear plastic until I got it to fit flush to the window frames. I used canopy glue to secure it place.
@Dobinj778 жыл бұрын
+TrekWorks did you use one strip across all 4 window frames or cut out 4 individual windows to glue in?
@rottiehood387210 жыл бұрын
Hey Boyd, You use automotive products thru out your builds, but you use hobby putty for filling seams! Why don't you use 3M or Dupont automotive putty? Keep up the great builds!
@TrekWorks10 жыл бұрын
I'm fond of the Squadron putty as it dries fast and dries fairly hard. It's also a simple one part putty. The automotive fillers that dry hard require a second part activator. I do use 3m spot putty where it's appropriate. It's not intended for any structural work. Only for filling minor pits and imperfections. It's too soft for anything else and will crack. I also use Evercoat automotive fillers for areas that I need to have really strong or might need to be sculpted a bit.

I'm not sure why you puttied the side of the upper half of the saucer section. I can understand adding putty to the seam once the two halves are joined but what are you concealing on the upper half?
@TrekWorks10 жыл бұрын
Robert there is a seam on the top edge of the saucer once you put the side wall pieces on there.Then another seam has to be filled on the bottom edge when you attach the lower half of the saucer.They both have to be filled in to be smooth and to stop light from leaking out from the gaps.
