In this video update of the Polar Lights 1:1000 scale Discovery U.S.S. Enterprise build I'm working on the warp engine nacelles installing LED lights and the Tenacontrols miniature motors for the spinning domes effect.

Glad to see you building this one. I'm definitely in love with this ship. My kit should be arriving in the mail today or tomorrow, hopefully.

I can not begin to tell you how much I enjoyed this video, this looks a lot like my Franklin on the nacelles part. I too have those motors (i got mine off ebay) looks just like those, anyway I plan on putting those on the USS Franklin to have those spin the same way the fins are supper thin and easy to break I may scratch build my mixing blade already broke two blades off. that slorarez may help on that. this kit is high on my list to build this year

The review can be seen on AST Trek Model Review channel they got the kit spot on nice molds and detail, decals are spot on plus added the other names for the other shuttle craft.

The TenaControls motors actually work between 3 to 6 volts. Boyd just misspoke about the motor voltage rating, probably because most of the motors do operate on 12 volts dc. Just a minor correction so people don't get confused on what we state about our motor rating.

@Steven Rosenthal Yes we sell the two motors for $32.00 + shipping to destination. In the United States, it's $9.00. Send an email to sales@tenacontrols.com in order to receive a Paypal invoice. Please let us know what country we are shipping to.

Have you tried using the diffuse layers from behind an LCD laptop screen, they are made up of layers of fresnel lenses and a frosted layer, they are designed to spread the light from led lights quite effectively. and you can buy broken LCD screens really cheaply

Sounds like a lot of work for what you can just as well achieve with a light spray coat of color.

Nice work. I always learn something new from watching your videos. Have you ever built a Gundam kit? I think it would be interesting to see your take on the building one given your style and method of doing things.

This build is looking awesome, Boyd! Thanks for the tips and for talking about the little things you do to step this model up. Does Ralph at TenaControls sell just the motors? If so, can you share the part number he has for it? Loving the build and the video series!

Hi Boyd hope all is well. I was wondering if you could do a short video on wiring the transistor...I have those and at 9V the transistor got really hot, I'm just a little confused how to wire one of those up. I can get e reverse action on the motor but transistor gets very hot...enough to burn your fingers if you touch it even a few minutes after you shut down power to it. lol

Hey Boyd could you do a short little showing how you wired up the Transistor to the Motors for those of us who are first timers to working with small 5 volt Transistors i've never worked with these Transistors before and i'd like to get it right without massing up the Motors ?

This is the pinout assuming it's fairly standard. components101.com/sites/default/files/component_pin/7805-Voltage-Regulator-Pinout.png I'm not 100% sure, and it depends on the current the motor needs but that regulator could get very very warm. I have an old PIC programmer lying around somewhere that had a 9v regulator with a small heatsink on it with a 12v supply and that used to get HOT.

Hi Boyd, where did you end up placing the 7805 transistor - in the engine pod or the secondary hull?

I glued it inside the secondary hull on the bottom of the port side pylon mount.

Hi my name is Terry and I was thinking about a solution for your lighting issue. I'm a licensed optician and I use prisms to help direct light in eyewear and I thought if you used prisms in your lighting designs it may solve the issue you were describing around the windows areas on the saucer section of the enterprise. You can also get a flexible material Vinal prisms called Fresnels and you can cut them and angle them and it will direct light in different areas.

Just curious, but if you're hooking up to a 9-12v power source, why can't you just use resistors to slow down the motors like you do with LEDs? Or are transistors the only option for something like that?
@TrekWorks
@TrekWorks 3 жыл бұрын
I tried using resistors and found that I could get the motors slowed down to the speed I wanted but then they wouldn't start again when I cycled the power on and off. Turns out that the motors draw more amperage when they first start and resistors limit the needed current from going through. Apparently transistors are different in that way and do allow enough current to go through on startup and also limit the voltage to control the speed.

@@TrekWorks Wow thanks, I never would have guessed that! I'm planning on using the PL motors along with my own internal lighting, but I'm guessing they'd probably have the same issue.
