Amazing kit-bash! I love the compacted design based on the Connie. Lower profile both on the side and front/back helps in battle. Also has a better center of gravity I would imagine. Looks made for battle more then the Connie. Great job again!

This ship needs two changes: (a) attach the nacelle struts to the secondary hull slightly down from the middle, making the struts a bit shorter but long enough for line of sight, and (b) give it a bit of a neck. The degree of squatness isn't the problem but the fact that the back of the saucer section is much, much too busy.

This is actually not too bad of a design. With a small modification to the secondary hull, it could totally serve as a tug or container hauler. "Liked" :)

A big thing that helped me start to enjoy them was taking an explanation from the books about why the TOS era has a retro look. They made their technology more analog to help counter Romulan hacking during the Romulan wars. Pretty good way to find an IC reason for RL aethestic influence.

I think seeing it on TV years ago before they remastered the whole thing for HD gives the impression it was just simplistic and bland, but when you see just how many subtle details are in those models it's truly staggering. Matt Jeffries really did an outstanding job for what essentially looks like a couple of toilet roll tubes stuck on a frisbee at first glance. Seeing physical models too with all this detail really makes you appreciate it too. I'm still more a fan of the refit though but the original Connie is still a gorgeous ship.

Can I say that I like this better than the Ares? This matches the lines from the TOS era. Lower the secondary hull JUST enough for the deflector the clear the sensor dome and it'd be great. Awesome job!

I don't remember where I read it (it was one of the manuals or blueprints) but the 3 disks on the front of the saucer were referenced as the "SINS" or Space Inertial Navigation Systems array and is used to both locate the ships position in space and orient the ship to the plane of the galaxy. It's the reason all Federation ships meet up with the same orientation to each other.

One thing that strikes me is that these could easily be either Tugs, Light-Cruisers (smaller secondary hull), Strike Carriers (mod-2nd hull) or made as fully heavy cruisers. Radiation from the warp nacelles might be a concern? Center-of-gravity is also a maybe-issue? The engineering section, regardless, is going to have central Warp-Coil fit issues, with some interior space not being, um, safe to bunk/work in. Overall, a possible ship, but maybe not the fleet workhorse that the builder had hoped for?
@onetruekeeper5055

The lower part of the saucer section is obstructing part of the navigational deflector dish. Perhaps that's the reason for the neck.

Very nice ship. The only thing I dislike is the visual tension of having the saucer and secondary hull so close together, as well as having the sensor dome so close to deflector. It just feel crowded. I understand this is sort of the inherent limitation of kitbashing... But, if this were ever developed in CG you could have one or two deck transition area between the two hulls to smooth it out and make it flow visually. As for the sensor dome, maybe this ship has two smaller domes, one on each side of the saucer. The bottom of the saucer could just be flat. But that might just straight up look unnatural on a TOS style saucer.
@Redshirt214
@Redshirt214 7 жыл бұрын
I actually think that she looks slower than the Connie, being visually less long and lean looking. Baltimore looks more like a squat, practical ship. I like where the nacelles are, I think it make sense as a way to jettison the engines if needs be in a emergency. She looks like a good serviceable ship, and I think her captain is a lucky man to command her!
@JarOfRats
@JarOfRats 7 жыл бұрын
Interesting, but the biggest issue is the fact the Connie was designed the way it was for saucer separation. Impulse drive in the saucer, warp drive in the secondary hull. This design eliminates that huge benefit. So, you're stuck with something like the Intrepid class. In that case, I'd have used shorter, wider struts, placed at 3 and 9 o'clock on the secondary hull. I'd have the struts swept back about 30°. It still needs a neck. I'd use a much thicker one that's a lot shorter than the Connie. The more I think of it, I'd end up with something a LOT like the Intrepid class, but done in a TOS theme.

Yo CapN' Foley, At first glance I thought this was Ptolemy Class, (have you guys done a mission thingie on that one already?). Because of that, in general this works for me as 'kitbash' goes. The Ptolemy and Saladin Classes were always a fascination for me because of that damn book that came out, (Starship Recognition or something, came out in the early 70s) I thought (at the time) they were peeks of what was to come on the show but it never had anything at all to do with that. Though some of the drawings did find their way into the TOS movies for the ship monitors. ~Mark~

I'm not a fan of the TOS era ships, that much, but I do like how it is easy to kit bash the Connie like that. You can see how other ships have fared the same, like the Hermes class is just the saucer and an engine nacelle, and the Miranda is a saucer with two nacelles smashed on, Federation dreadnought is an extra nacelle thrown on and so on. I also assumed the saucer and nacelles were the same size on most, if not all of the classes. Makes production easier and "cheaper" since the parts are produced anyway. Like giving the ships separate intentions as well (had a better word for that). Since the Miranda was supposed to be a lighter and cheaper/simpler version of the Constellation.

I thing what you need to do is cut away the entire dome on the underside of the saucer , slide the sauce aft so that it doesn't over hang the deflector dish a whole lot of at all, put the sensor dome light on the underside of the secondary hull and the have a horizontal element coming out of the secondary close to if not on the red pinstripe that connects with the struts and that would be your power transfer and service conduit to the nacelles

Kitbashing works for starships. Engineers are not going to reinvent the wheel for every ship they build and there should be a lot of similarities between designs. In a wartime economy you might do stuff like cut out the neck of a ship or move engine around for the next build to speed up the construction process as you need to field them quickly and lower the cost.

All the way through this episode I kept thinking that this version would have been perfect for setting down on planets. As the majority of heavy mechanical would be mid structure no need for tricycle nose strut. What or how it would have been powered in landing and takeoff I have no clue.

This falls into the same justification that I have for the Nebula Class. I would say that the Nebula, or this would be justified that it's slightly less capable; but, it could be birthed in smaller shipyards and ports for construction, repair, and maintenance. Sort of like how there's a lot of airports in the world that a 747 simply can't land or take off from, or how a Nimitz class carrier can't go through the Panama Canal.

As money doesn't mean anything the cheaper part could mean man hours, faster to build, smaller quicker to construct using the same machinery, less time if they need extra ships in a pinch, could also be built in a hurry if there were spare parts readily available or in a production line situation in time of a large conflict.

I like the design well enough; it's very TOS (for lack of a better word, seeing how we only have the Constitution and it's pre-Refit variations for that time period). However i have the same kind of question i have with many, many other ship classes. Don't get me wrong, i LOVE new ship classes to dissect but half the time i truly wonder "why does this exist in-universe". Like, unless this class is significantly smaller than the Constitution - what good would it do to rearrange the parts? My gut feeling is, initially, "different Warp Geometrie", and that's probably the answer in-universe, but... there's presumably a reason why the Constitution looks the way it does so i'd argue that, for this rough ship size, it's likely the optimal configuration, or close to it. Normally i internally justify different classes with vastly different roles, like cargo vessels, survey vessels, explorers etc, but even that doesn't seem to work with true kitbashes... i don't wanna bash the ship, it looks lovely (though i personally would'd change the Secondary Hull), but i think it's a little tooooo close to the Constitution. Frankly i think it begs for a Nebula-style pod-tower. Oh, and for the question of whether it looks faster? I'd argue it doesn't. Sticking the Secondary right on the Saucer and having the Nacelles hang down makes it look kinda squat. It takes the elegance out of the design, that elongated, back-swepped aspect of the Connie. I'd say it looks more like a cargo freighter or battleship. Edit: (Yes, i know, commenting before the video is over is a TERRIBLE habit...) See, i don't buy the "less crew"-thing. If every thing else is literally the same part (Saucer, Nacelles, Secondary) then what have you actually saved in space? The Neck. Nothing but the Neck. You can't even argue that there's less room in the Saucer like on the Miranda Class because the Secondary Hull is still entirely intact, and presumably the same size. Where does that crew reduction come from? Maybe there's less Blueshirts on board but you likely aren't saving on maintenance with that size.

maybe the boltimore class was was an emerance stepping stone between the aries heavy cruiser and the constituion class flag battle cruiser about the time of the anxanar war. maybe the constitutions neck were too hard to build in a short time to meet the klingon d7 in battle at axanar 2245 on the first 4 years axanar war but the boltimore class was in a pinched designed after the more compack aries class look but had the skills level of the full sized constitution cruiser class without the problematic technical problems in the neck. in between the 2 4 years wars ther 2 was a 2 year seizece fire then by the time of the second 4 years war the constitution class focused on the d7 while the boltimore clasd and aries class focused on the d6 and smaller klingon ships. 2255. besides in 2245 the uss constitution and uss enterprise constitution class and the fleet of aries would of been out matched and out gunned by the klingons if the bolitmore class did not fill the role of heavy battle cruiser maybe the the bolimore class fill the role of fleet defence and partrol more the the flag ship duties
