11:17 that Galor was firing from the top out at the peregrine fighter & the bright explosion is one being destroyed. The dull explosions on the Cardassian hull are coming from torpedo hits of the fighters. I regard Hideki class as frigates as they seem to operate in units of 1-3. They are much to large to enter a shuttle bay. I think they are roughly dominion bug ship sized. I recall one exploding on DS9's shields around the habitat of inner ring whereas a cruiser would of done much more damage in a collision.

1. Front and aft doors were troop deployment / Huge cargo doors. Cardassians exploited and subjected worlds for natural resources due to largely depleting their own. So the move in, deploy troops, create forced labour out of the natives and transported the raw goods out. 2. As with all cardassian design it's Egyptian in origin. Even the cardassian head 'spoon' was derived from the animal symbol worn to the front of the forehead of the headpieces of the Pharaohs. That's why on close analysis you see small pyramid like shapes on DS9 and other cardassian vessels. 3. Cardassians are desert like dwellers, they made numerous reference to loving the heat, etc, look at cardassia at the end of DS9 you can see the desert like planet. Therefore their ship colour came from that. Probably for the same reason earth desert military combat uniforms have a similar colour pallet. Why is starfleet grey? What colour are earth navy ships currently? Greys, why? Grey blends well between sea & sky

The warp nacelles are located at the tips of the "wings". We see it in the TNG episode " chain of command part 2" where Data is showing Jellico a sensor scan of the Galor glass, and he pointed out the nacelles. We only see it for a few seconds, just thought I'd share.

I love the Galor class. A very functional design, with a monster primary weapon. I love the loading bay on the belly of the ship, with doors at the fore and aft. I would have adored seeing this warship settled on a planet surface, offloading troops en masse. I have to say though (and I've noticed this kind of thing a lot in your episodes) if you think this ship can only fire that one weapon and it has no others, you really haven't been paying attention

@rubenloza19206 жыл бұрын
This ship always made me think: Easier to produce than other major alpha quadrant civilization's ships but uncomfortable. Really single purpose of being a warship. They seem to depend on having a few of them together in formation instead of depending on a lot of maneuver and pure individual power. Which is what a ship design needs to be when you are trying to hold together an empire by force (from your own people and those you conquered) while that empire is kind of on the declining path. That declining empire also happens to be surrounded by other civilizations with more powerful economies and slight technological advantages. So it ends up being a stripped down but well armored/armed ship, that the shipyards can build quickly and not taking a lot of personal to operate all at the same time. Trying to maximize what you have with more limited resources while still maintaining your strength on equal footing with those around you. Just my 2 cents though.

@Gigas01018 жыл бұрын
I always thought the Galor design had something between a catfish and a Gila monster or horned lizard sort of design. The latter would make sense due to the Cardassians being a scaled, possibly reptilian species from what appears to be a very hot, arid planet. Definitely a fan of the Cardassians, though that's because I watched DS9 before TNG. I didn't like how throwaway the Galor felt as a ship, just a menacing non-federation hull to carry off-color beams and threaten the heroic humans, and would've appreciated a bit more love thrown their way, but I loved the design and the thought that went into it. The Cardies felt very much like a nationalistic military state, so having their go-to ship of the line be designed to resemble their insignia, their national icon, it speaks a good deal about the Cardassians as a people.

This video almost made me not like you guys..... The Galor class is my second favorite ship in all of Star Trek (second only to the Galaxy Dreadnought Refit from All Good Things). It is a very sleek and interesting design. The color and style made it instantly recognizable. I've always been a fan of the Cardassians ever since their first appearance. All of the Cardassian ships are built off of the same skeleton structure of this ship. The Keldon is just a Galor class with some extra decks and armor built up on it. That picture of the Galor getting shot in the warp core is from the big battle when the Federation alliance was trying to break the line to retake DS9 before the minefield came down. It was a joint effort between the Federaton and their allies. That shot is likely coming from one of the allied ships.

Ok from a long time Cardassian fan some thoughts I have. Spiral wave disruptors could be phased or plasma generated. The ship looks and as is stated in early episodes, "they hunt in packs" remind me of sharks! I have a model and see the main forward array as a dual use deflector/cannon mount with two launchers below for torpedoes. I am impressed that you pointed out the what i will say is cargo holds under the wing, but yes the main shuttle bay is fore facing. The top of the main hull bubble in at least one fight scene is a dual disruptor mount. I see the warp reactor and nacelles in the foreword wings, the pincer to me is the impulse engines.
@builder3967 жыл бұрын
5:30 Regarding the main disruptor cannon being marked as a navigational deflector, I dont think thats necessarily a mistake. Federation starships can use their deflector dish to fire almost any type of particle or energy beam, in the episode Starship Down the Defiant used the Deflector as a jury-rigged phaser even. In my opinion it might just be that the Cardassians realized at some early point that a deflector dish can so easily be rigged into a powerful main weapon (as in you can easily dump a shitload of energy into it and blast something with it), so they decided to actually use their deflector AS a weapon, which eventually turned into a common feature of starship design for them the same way as a saucer section is common on federation ships. Also, I do imagine the Galor class having secondary, less powerful phaser banks (actually its really confusing, i recall most often cardassian weapons being called phasers, not disruptors) spread across the hull to give full or nearly full coverage against anything maneuverable enough to move out of the main weapons firing arc. There are even a few shots where these secondary beam weapons were shown.
@berthulf9 жыл бұрын
Always thought this was one of the more interesting designs from TNG. To my mind, it has a somewhat fish-like feel, but is fairly reminiscent in feel of the old Spanish galleons for some reason. I do get the reptilian feel, though I've always thought of that colour as a matt gold/ yellow. The whole design feels very utilitarian and 'military'. The primary weapon right at the front ( why would all races have deflector arrays that look like the federation's? I reckon the orange glowy bits are the nav deflectors) and a fairly small forward silhouette. I would reckon it has other defensive weapons about the hull, certainly the games do give it additional hardpoints all over its hull. You mentioned it firing from the wingtips: yes, I remember that too, but can't tell you when/what show that was. I can tell you that most games give it hardpoints there. Lastly, I reckon the 'Warp Core' would actually be further back in the tail, near the pincer-like 'nacelles'. Why have it the other end of the vessel? Or somewhere so vulnerable? This vessel's design aesthetics, in my opinion, are all about facing towards the enemy and mass fleet warfare.
@DaemonEX08 жыл бұрын
Loved blowing these up in ST: Bridge Commander; go in with a spin to use all phaser arcs, then unload three quantum torpedoes directly on that exposed warp-core. Fun times. :']

This was a ship I hated too... until the final episodes of DS9. I liked the cobra-like design aesthetic... but I always thought of the ship was an "adequate" enemy vessel and didn't think much of it. I liked it about as much as the Ferengi Marauder... which means I didn't really like it. It wasn't until the shot (3:43 in this video) from the DS9 finale when the Cardassians turned on the Dominion and one Galor class ship is depicted heroically firing on Jem'Hadar ships that I started to take an interest in the ship and wondered what an episode of "Star Trek: Cardassians" would be like. I could then imagine this ship playing the part of a "hero" the same way that the Klingon Bird Of Prey can work as either a heroic or villain ship.

Another fine episode from Trek yards, surprised these isn’t one of your favourites, as I would put it in my top ten Enemies/Villain ships. I do have one small annoyance, Would the Commander please cross reference his eagle-moss magazine for these shows where he has the model as he tends to ask questions that they have answered, for example, the spiral-wave disruptor locations. Why do you find it odd that the Cardassians main navigational deflector doubles as a weapon like the Romulan D’Deridex or Enterprise D in best of both worlds? Anyway keep up the good work here hoping to see the Breen or more Xindi ships in 2016.
@power5439 жыл бұрын
+James Oldfield If i looked at the magazines before then there would be no questions as we would know most of it, we like to come to these episodes with any knowledge we already knew so we can try and dissect and ask the right questions that we can then answer in full when we take a look at the details, hence a discussion show :).

Two things I noticed, while looking at the LCARS display, that you guys didn't mention. First off is that there appears to be a line of disruptors in the spine of the ship, just behind the Warp Core (they aren't labelled, but they are the same color as the disruptors in the tail section). The second is you didn't mention that the Primary Bridge section has an impulse engine sticking out of it. So yeah, there is a strong likelihood that it can separate.
@captainobvious92338 жыл бұрын
I wish the major powers had a larger diversity of ship classes. The Federation had dozens of classes. But with the Romulans, Klingons, Cardassians, all you saw were 2 or 3 different classes.

With the red and yellow glowy bits at the front it always seemed to me like the ship was originally designed to have the bulkier end be the back and the pincer end be the front. So the red deflector/beam weapon was originally its impulse engine, and for whatever reason it got flipped.

my main beef with the aesthetic of that ship is the front upper part that is literally obscuring the firing arc of the main phaser array - it hinders the ability to shoot "upwards". - other than that its quite sleek design with relatively small frontal attack profile.
