Does any of these cars work in a rough rural environment with roads that suck in spring and icy driveways in winter? I'm less worried about range and charging then I am about them being able to handle normal life for me.

Toyota advertises their bz4x as somewhat off-road as it is quite high on it’s wheels and can wade trough pretty deep water. It is available in 4 wheel drive. The European pre production test drives were offered on an off-road track with very steep hills. The suspension is pretty stiff but that is to be expected in an ev as it is heavy due to it’s batteries.

Why don't they make one of the wheels a generator constantly charging the battery in electric cars. Unless someone already thought of it. Better than plugging it in.

You mean break charging? That already exist. That's when you convert the speed and the mass of the vehicle to energy. You can't charge a car on its own energy that it is releasing while accelerating. The wheels that are doing the charging would have a generator on it and that means the wheels are not spinning freely due to the generator applying resistance while the other pair off wheels are trying to accelerate. The car would have to draw even more power just to overpower that resistance. That is like riding your bicycle while squeezing on the brake handle. The brake is the resistance (charge generator) while you feet are the acceleration.

What I don't understand is why these cars all have massive touch screens infotainment. This is a safety hazard unless your on the auto cruise features. Why don't they just make the knob things voice controlled (like windshield wipers, volume, temperature).

They simply aren’t ready for mainstream use. Charging speeds is the biggest issue for most of these. 5 minutes vs an hour on the good electric cars. Easy choice

If you're talking about long, 3-row standard SUVs, then the only option is the Rivian R1S currently selling right now. The Hummer EV SUV will come out within a few years, not sure if thats 3 row, but thats true SUV, big, chunky, offroad capable, etc

Number one EV SUV has to be BYD YangWong U8. It has range over 1000km, close to 1200 horse power, four independent motors, zero to sixty miles about 3 seconds, climb 45 degree slope, water seal and “swim” up to 30 minutes, tank turn, crab walk, run on three wheels, high speed in snow and on ice, and size about a Lincoln Navigator with Napa leather interior. NIO et5 wagon should also be in the top three.
