I chose what I thought was a unique but simple name for my dog - Suna (rhymes with Luna). My sons both studied Japanese and love the language and culture. So, it seemed fitting to choose the name I did since it means "sand" in Japanese (which fits her fur color) as well as being short and simple. I was surprised when I took Suna to the vet's office the first time. The receptionist actually asked how to pronounce the name.

"Just get a cat, they don't care." Funny thing is, I put more care and consideration into picking my cat's name than these parents did for their human children. I looked into what kind of names catch a cat's attention (short with a rising pitch). Then I searched for a foreign name that fits, to make sure he won't be confused by someone else with the same name. In the end I picked Sepi, a Finnish diminutive for Seppo or Sebastian. He actually listens to it! Turns out cats do care, if you think about their needs instead of your quirky dumb ideas. Just like children!

Not the name should make the child special, the child should make the name special. I don't understand why parents want to give their kids an extraordinary name thinking it will make their kid unique when their kid already IS unique. My ex-colleague has a now adult daughter named Sarah. Sarah is the most common name ever, but it sounded so special when my colleague said it. It was always "My Sarah is coming to visit me", "When my Sarah was younger, she had this as her favorite toy", "My Sarah used to love spaghetti, she always looked like a mess when eating them". Yes, the name Sarah isn't extraordinary, but this was HER Sarah, and coming from her, you would have thought the name was the rarest, most special name ever because it was attached to someone that meant so much to my colleague. Please, parents, don't be scared to give your kid a basic name. I promise it won't be basic to you because your child is wearing it, and your child will make it special for you.

This is such a sweet sentiment that makes me think more about my own experience and might help me recontextualize it. but honestly I always hated sharing my basic ass name with other kids in school. Especially when one of them was my bully and it hurts when you hear people calling your name and you turn around, but they’re actually talking to another kid. Now as a small business owner in a field where you use your name, I’ve had to change my name to be unique enough for trademark law/website/social media handle reasons. It’s so frustrating. I won’t be inventing new names for my kids, but just proper names that aren’t in the top 50 popular names that year.

Many of us who grew up in the 80's and 90's got tired of having five kids named Jennifer or Tiffany in a class of thirty students. Then, celebrities started naming their kids things like "Apple." Parents got competitive about their children being the _only one_ with a certain name. It snowballed from there. When the Trajedeighs of the world start having kids en masse, there will probably be a trend to use simply-spelled, "old fashioned" names. We'll end up with everyone knowing several children named Sarah. Or, maybe that's just my perspective because my name is a backlash against the way my father was named. 🤷🏻‍♀️😁

I have lots of problems with my parents and how they raised me, but I think they named me beautifully and perfectly. Common enough to not confuse people, but unique enough that I am usually the only one in the room with my name. Common/popular names can be quite pretty. If someone wants to give their kid a unique name, there are lots of beautiful names that fell out of fashion in past decades that deserve to be revived.

when my wife was pregnant with our first child, i had some friends that were joking that my child would probably be the anti-christ, so we should name it something like Beelzebub. So i asked, but what if it is a girl? So they came up with Elsebub, since Else is a female name in Denmark. I thought i was funny, so i started calling our unborn child Elsebub. But then we learned that it was a boy, so the name was shortened to Bob. After using Bob as the unofficial name for months, we had to ask ourselves, are we really going to name our child Bob? So we ended up naming him Robert, with Bob as a nickname only we use. So anyway, my son is actually named after Beelzebub...

Yeah, normalise taking your own name as you grow into yourself. Even the best given name is just an attempt, you parents don't know you yet, nobody knows you yet! Some cultures have your community help you pick a name, and I think getting input makes sense, but you're your own adult, and your name should be *you*. Maybe you decide to stick with what your parents gave you to keep as your adult name, but I feel like more people should take that as an actual decision.

Radien is a decent name- it’s spelled as it sounds and it’s the name of a god/godess/deity/spirit/angel; I’ve seen kids with name like Freya and Gabriel and never got teased for it. However, kids will ALWAYS find something to bully another kid about, even if it’s the most normal or mundane thing. For example, I have a basic ass American/English name: Max. But certian kids would always say things like “why did they give you a dog name?” or they’d call me “Maxi Pad” after the feminine hygiene product. Kids are just evil unfortunately.

The fact that "Periwinkle" is winning by a landslide gave me a shred of hope in humanity. It's a pretty color, the nickname "Peri" is cute, (although the "winkle" will be an issue in middle school for sure,) and most of all, it's a real word spelled correctly!

Periwinkle is also an invasive plant. Also an edible snail.

@@AnnaAnna-uc2ff I always maintain that you should never name your child after noun, it will do them no favours. There are only a few main exceptions that I can think of currently, for an important reason, but people still meow at me walking past them.

@@jamie1602 But as soon as the other kids find out that winkle is part of the name, that's what they're going to be called.
