personally i think crochet is timeless- saying its a trend is like saying knitwear is a trend. I think when most people think of crochet as a trend, its def the specific microtrend items like that one striped dress or the checkered totes that were big but crochet def can be made timeless!

@@kylier7126 Good point, Kylie! I reckon crochet will always have a place in fashion but compared to knitwear or denim, which are evergreen fashion items, crochet’s appeal is quite niche. So once it falls out of the main trend, you probably won’t see the general public wearing much of it. But it’s all about how you wear it-if you’re not consuming crochet pieces just because the avant-basic aesthetic is trendy (which I think will eventually be phased out) and you’re injecting your personal style when you wear it, crochet items could be timeless. 💖

THIS! 👏🏼 I completely agree-it’s so annoying when the things you’ve liked for literally your whole life get hyped by the media and influencers to a point where they become a trend. It’s problematic because the mass flocks to consume them only because they’re trendy. 🥲

This is even worse for fashion that is part of broader subcultures (especially POC ones) because they attempt to dilute much of the meaning of the original pieces when they usually have a lot of significance.

I feel like what people classify as trendy vs timeless depends on your own personal life. For example, I'm not focused on looking classic and put together. I'm dressing how I feel best expresses me and whether that's with wearing chunky loafers with a tennis skirt. Or, wearing overalls with a mushroom sweater. Granted, I'm not saying that I support people buying microtrends to only wear it once and never to touch it again. I am saying that we should stop looking at the term of having a timeless style as a monolith. Having a timeless style shouldn't be about only wearing neutrals and basics. It should be about what colors look best on you and not colors that the world says is an essential. Wearing prints and patterns that make you the individual feel happy. I feel like we also need to embrace experimenting with fashion a bit more. Yes, overconsumption is a problem. But, we shouldn't be shooing away from people who want to try something new. And, hey maybe it didn't work for them but it brought them one step closer on finding out their own unqiue style. I've rambled for a long bit here. But, overall good video and you made some interesting points even though I disagreed with a lot of them.
@vikkipedia_org

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts-lots of great points there! 👍 The key message of this video is to get people to think a bit more before they buy into a trend. My main concern is not only overconsumption, but also overproduction. Too many trends/microtrends have been created by major players of the industry and popularised by influencers to make money. But they’re often Eurocentric and not very inclusive. We’re definitely aligned on the idea of encouraging people to experiment with fashion. As I mentioned in the video, I believe fashion is a means to express and affirm one’s identity, especially for some LGBTQI+ and PoC communities. It sounds like you’ve got your personal style on lock, which is totally amazing! But there are also lots of people that haven’t developed their sense of style and are constantly looking for guidance. I was one of those people that didn’t understand what I really liked. Looking back at my late teens and throughout my 20s, I unfortunately contributed to the overconsumption/overproduction cycle. I bought what magazines told me to buy and what celebs were wearing (before the days of influencers lol). I wish I didn’t rush into getting a bunch of trendy items for the sake of fitting in. Tons of 90s low-waisted jeans, Y2K tops and platform shoes have been discarded. 😞 The advice I had in this video might be playing it too safe for some, but I feel like I need to act responsibly, especially for people that are still trying to figure out what they like. I totally agree when you said “timeless style shouldn't only be about wearing neutrals and basics”. But for a person that has just started their journey on exploring their fashion style, I reckon it’s best to take things slowly. Not saying you should never buy a bold item or a trend piece-but if you’re not sure what to get, it’s good to start building your wardrobe with basic essentials and gradually add pops of colour/statement pieces that aligns with your personal taste as you develop it. Thanks for showing me a different point of view. Even though our style might differ, I actually think our core values align-fashion is what you make of it. If it represents who you are, keep rocking what that make you feel good. Anything can be timeless if you want it to be! 🥰

@@anniexuan Love this, Amie! Thanks so much for sharing. 💖 Absolutely agree-say the fringe trend, it's at the heart of the hippie culture but it's going to be a massive trend in 2022 (which I'll be covering in the next video I just shot)! I don't have a problem with designers borrowing visual cues of an aesthetic to create a brand new piece of garment but it does feel sometimes that these 'trends' or 'microtrends', which to some, are actually their way of life and part of the culture for decades, have been overhyped on social media to drive consumerism. Do you think this is a topic that's worth doing a deep dive on? x

@@jessesotheysay Couldn’t agree more! As a society, we should think a bit more before jumping onto every trend under the sun. As a teen, I think you shouldn't feel like you have to stick to one style for the rest of your life and decide it(as a teen) but I think it is important to think about what you have and how you can reuse as your style changes. What will you likely still want when you are older and what can you repurpose? Think before you buy. Also, I agree with knee-high boots, I am currently not a fan but there is no denying that they are here to stay. Classic for sure.

For people who're uncomfortable wearing stilettos or pointy heel shoes, wedges are always a good option. Wedges are never out of fashion.
@vikkipedia_org
@vikkipedia_org 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your comment, Anuska! Fashion trends are cyclical-no doubt wedges will come back in fashion but I personally don’t think it’s a timeless shoe. The silhouette of a wedge is quite hefty and tends to date very quickly, especially when it’s paired with specific textures, say espadrille or cork. For a more timeless alternative that’s more comfortable than stilettos, I’d suggest simple block heel sandals. The shape is much sleeker and has a more neutral look-you’ll get so much wear out of them ❤️

I feel like what is trendy v timeless also depends where you live and on the culture(s) within the area. I’m a POC and recently moved to Wollongong, Australia. This beachside coastal city, (which is predominantly White) tend to favour short dresses, gym attire, leggings, crop tops, jeans, patterns and white sneakers. However when I used to live in the western suburbs of Sydney (which have large densities of POC), the main pieces of clothing you’d see were trackies, mostly black items, longer dresses, hoodies and sweats, and slides, or Nike Air Jordan’s. Living in two different areas has made me realise that I am also influenced by those around me without even realising it. It was so easy to switch styles or buy particular items when they are the only thing you see around you / compared to what you see online. Thank god I’ve developed my own sense of style since this epiphany 😂

LOVE this-thanks so much for sharing your observation, Namida! It’s fascinating to see how locations/cultures affect the way we dress, especially from a fellow PoC’s perspective! Here in Auckland, we also have ‘uniforms’ that stereotypically represent certain areas or subcultures. As a child of immigrant parents, the way I dressed in my teens, even through uni, was heavily influenced by those around me because I spent so much energy trying to fit in. It took me a looooong time to find my personal style! But we all have to go through our own unique journey to further define our identity/get comfortable with the way we look and I’m so glad you’ve found your personal sense of style that you’re not going to waver from! ❤️

Oh hey another fellow person-from-the-general-Sydney-area! Honestly I never really thought about it in depth until now, and thinking of the different Sydney areas that I frequent the most, it's so true how different the fashion can depend on geography and the people in the area. You've already gone into detail with Western Sydney so I'll skip lol. The Northern Beaches (which is predominantly white) has a lot of flowy, surfer, and vsco girl styles of fashion, and also a lot of the stuff you mentioned about Wollongong. I can't really pinpoint specific styles in the Inner West (which comparatively, is significantly more diverse to coastal suburbs), because it really depends from suburb to suburb. Like if you're closer to the CBD e.g. Newtown or Glebe, you can find more alternative styles like punk, lolita, and also preppy styles. But if you go further towards western suburbs, you start to see more of the casual, streetwear types of styles, some of which you mentioned. Honestly it's incredibly interesting, and it's also made me think how much influence my environment had on my style, because I feel that I stick out like a sore thumb whenever I visit the Northern Beaches and I find it kinda funny lmao.

I disagree partially with the low rise jeans being trendy. In the past (especially 90s- early 2000s) it was a way to make your figure the staement peice rather than introduce an inspiring outfit, but with the body positivity and body neutrality movement on the rise I believe they could become a statement peice used to make any outfit personal. Fashion trends are often created and then popularised by the major players of the industry and therefore could be problematic because some of them are Eurocentric and not very inclusive. When I did my research for this video, it occurred to me that majority of the women representing the low rise trend, both in the 90s/early 2000s and nowadays on social media, are white and thin. I can’t believe you don’t have more subscribers! This is such a well put together, entertaining, and informative video. One of my life long loves is fashion and I’ve recently been relying less on trends to navigate my sense of fashion and sticking to staples I love plus some incorporations of trends. And I’ve also been getting a lot of fashion inspo from tiktok that has been pushing my investment into statement pieces and my love of all things strange and girly lol. In the end tho my favorite thing to see in someones fashion is a honest look into who they are, it’s so magical to see how people paint themselves ✨

I think for me as a South African they remind me too much of a school uniform especially if they're plaid. Same with chunky loafers, they looked too much like school shoes we are forced to wear from like 7 to 18 years old you know. I agree with almost everything you've said but, I'm going to disagree on the cowboy boot trend. I believe that it's a timeless wardrobe staple if it's in a neutral color and has minimalist details. I also believe that the context in where and how they're worn is also important too. That's also not mentioning they're practical uses in the daily lives of farmers or other trades.

I think it's actually really good to have strong distinctive elements like zebra prints or cowboy boots in your wardrobe *but only if you're willing to commit to them.* If you like a distinctive item enough to wear it in the long term it stops being a trend thing and starts being part of what makes your wardrobe unique! This is what I've done with a lot of offbeat or distinctive items such as my leather choker and my cloak.

I love this video! It’s so true, it’s inspiration overstimulation, which leads me to retreat to a neutral palette and think I need to focus on a capsule wardrobe. Which, isn’t actually me, although I admire refined a textured, neutral look! I love maximalism in every way but I get thrifting vibes (and not in a good way!) really quickly when I try to put a creative outfit together. As style and trends are revolving at such a rapid rate, it’s a fun time to get dressed, and I’ve decided to invest more in things like classic bags and shoes, and button downs that can be worn multiple ways, so no matter what I’m wearing, at least something feels grounded in myself. Fashion is so fun but it can be all-consuming on many levels, and its an amazing feeling when you kind of find your vibe :-)

Thank you so much for your thought-provoking comment! I couldn’t agree more-fashion is supposed to be fun and ideally we should be able to regularly change up our outfits to match how we feel on the day. But lately I’m feeling the stress because of how fast trend cycles are moving. It just seem like things will become out of trend after a couple of wears. I love your idea of thrifting-I reckon it’s the way to go if you want to achieve the maximalist aesthetic without buying new pieces all the time! Speaking of maximalism, I’m actually putting together a new video to talk about the trends of 2022 and how I would style them (and spoiler alert: maximalism is going to be huge in 2022!) One thing I've found with being able to make more trendy items last well past their peak is sticking to a monochrome selection. I only wear black, grey, and a very small amount of white. I have items from all different styles of fashion and having a uniform color palette allows me to mix them together and still be "relevant".

I think whether a piece is trendy or timeless or not also depends on your own personal style. something that I might consider a trend someone else might consider a staple of their wardrobe for many years to come, or vice versa.
@vikkipedia_org

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, AJ! I absolutely agree-what's deemed to be trendy vs timeless is relative. There's always the 'mainstream' trend that whether we like it or not, sets the tone for the majority. But if something reflects you personal style, nothing should stop you from wearing it! YOU are the one that makes a piece timeless! x

also blazers - big and chunky are cute but slightly a trend. i do not like tight fitted blazers but i personally would opt for a size just in the middle - big enough to be comfy, small enough to be appropriate to wear to different occasions

Good shout! It's all about having the right balance! ❤️ My personal ideal is to have a blazer that is slightly oversized on the body so it's got a boxier, more high-fashion vibe, but with sleeves that are just right-so the boxy cutting looks like it's been done on purpose as a design cue.

Specific pieces are going viral because brand are sending them to a bunch of influencers at the same time and then all of them are posting in them but by the time regular people orders one (real or dupe) it’s not cool anymore

Thanks so much for sharing, Paige! That's so true! ❤️ The whole trend cycle is driven by brands creating these 'viral' pieces, amplified by the influencers to create demand. Don't come after my wedges! 😂 They're on break right now because it's cold, but they will be back haha. Birkenstock makes surprisingly fashionable wedges. Also, when you live in a cowtown, cow print is life, not trendy. Same with cowboy boots. Also, I really want to experiment with sheer tights and strappy heels, but it's so anathema in my family I haven't been able to yet. I have, however started **mixing colors** in an outfit, which is like a fashion revolution in my family. My grandma's outfits are literally always one or two colors head to toe (and undergarments 😆)

I personally don’t think cow print will remain popular in the long run but I totally agree anything can be timeless if you want it to be-the ultimate message I was trying to get across in the video is that everyone should take trends with a grain of salt and rock whatever that’s authentic to their identity and lifestyle. ❤️ I actually think sheet tights and scrappy heels could be an amazing outfit-you should soooo try it! I do disagree with the low rise Jean section, I think if you’re looking for the appearance of a flat tummy with low rise jeans they don’t work for A LOT of people, but I think what we should be doing as a society is to get used to seeing different silhouettes on different bodies because that’s realistic and still cute
@vikkipedia_org
@vikkipedia_org 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! I totally agree-the low rise jeans aren't the issue, it's the way they've been overhyped on social media and popularised by people of a particular body type, which actually sets a pretty unrealistic beauty standard and causes more fashion anxiety. When I was doing my research, I found it extremely difficult to find images of women with different body shapes wearing the low rise silhouette. 😭 Would love to see more representation from curvy girls, WoC rocking the low rise cut! 💖

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I should've been more specific-I don't have an issue with crochet as a handicraft. It will always have a place in fashion. What I have an issue with is the avant-basic crochet pieces that are completely overhyped by influencer marketing, which are unfortunately causing a lot of overconsumption and waste. I totally agree-if an aesthetic or a specific item of clothing represents who you are, it doesn't matter if it falls out of fashion. Because you'll be wearing it beyond the trend and you won't be part of the vicious cycle of overconsumption/overproduction. Keep rocking your crochet pieces-you are what makes it timeless! x

I love your take on trend vs. timeless and agree with most of them, however I have to disagree with the jeans one. I work as a salesassistant in a little boutique and the thing that I noticed and learned with jeans is: You can't really put a shape of jeans as a trend. (Or better said we shouldn't) It could look not so good on you but look amazing on someone else. A reason why I don't like the jeans debate between the millenials and gen Z. But other than that absolutly love your video!! ♥️♥️

Love this! Thanks so much for sharing, Ansana!
