Another way to save on the cost of both the plane rental and the CFI is to become a Civil Air Patrol (CAP) member. CAP is the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force and the owner of the world’s largest fleet of single engine piston aircraft. The planes are often newer and are always IFR-equipped and often glass cockpits. Some flying can be done without cost to you, paid for by the CAP as part of proficiency or actual missions. For training outside of the budget, plane rental is at cost, usually dry, but still well under $100/hour. CFI-Is who are also CAP members provide the training and are prohibited from charging for their services. Senior members must already have a PPC, but cadet members under 18 years of age can receive free training up to a student solo paid for by CAP.

Trent I've been watching your channel since the beginning and seeing how much you evolved with your videos is something special. You're so precise with your edits and dialogue. You can sell water to a well when it comes to aviation. The work you put in with responding to comments and your channel and also your entreprenuial spirit and class. Would love the opportunity to meet you one day. As always wish the channel and your endevours the best!! I'm 28 as a Skywest cadet finishing instrument at an accelerated school in Long Beach CA at Aces high aviation. CFI's average 80 to 100 hours per month flying and maybe one day I'll fly with you out of Boise with Skywest as you also made my family and I want to move to Boise. Thank you for aspiring pilots into furthering into this amazing career.

There is already a video or two like that on my channel. Just search for the word CFI. I also offer a comprehensive training program on how to become an independent CFI and you can get more information on that here flywithtrent.com/cfi-masterclass/

Another cost saving tip is that you can skip the 50 hrs of XC required if you go through a 141 program. I just started my instrument training and saving 50 hours of rental time was a huge reason I went 141.
@alirazayousif89767 күн бұрын
Are you planning to do Commercial part 61?
@HaileyB-h1q7 күн бұрын
How? Can u elaborate that?
@IlPinnacolo7 күн бұрын
141 is the slowest and most inefficient waste of time possible. 61 is superior in practically every way. I have done both.
@ryanwiik2837 күн бұрын
@HaileyB-h1q under 141 there is no requirement to have 50 hours of PIC cross country time. But this requirement does exist if you get your instrument rating via part 61. I had about 10 PIC XC hours when I got my private so instead of paying to rent a plane for 40ish hours more of XC, I was able to start instrument training right away with a 141 school. Saved me thousands of dollars and weeks of time.
@logan96847 күн бұрын
Sounds great on paper, but in reality, the majority of 141 programs typically take 3-4x as long to get your ratings due to all the stage checks between each rating and course minimums and usually cost double the amount of money due to how they market their program to students who don’t know any better. I've flight instructed at both a collegiant 141 school and 61 school. 141 is always significantly longer due to all the stage checks and course minimums in between each rating. The reduced minimums in the end don’t make up much because the guy who got all his ratings in a year will be flight instructing building hours significantly before the 141 guy reaches his commercial license. The only benefit I’ve seen from 141 students is that typically their ground knowledge is better than that of 61 students, and that’s primarily due to how long it takes them to obtain each rating they spend more time on each subject. Flying wise, I wouldn’t be able to tell you a difference. You did make a good choice getting your private before going into the 141 pit. I've never seen anyone get close to getting their private pilot license in the "reduced hours" the 141 programs market to their students. Typically, an average 141 student I've seen has spent more time with a flight instructor redoing lessons since they can't meet lesson requirements to move on until everything in that lesson has been satisfactorily accomplished, resulting in delays and more money wasted. I am primarily speaking on behalf of the collegiant flight schools (1000-hour ATP minimums). Maybe the non-collegiant 141 schools are different I can't speak on those, but from what I've seen, they seem similar.

If you have a PPL, but no IR, can you practice approaches, solo in VMC? What if you have a passenger on board?
@trent_dyrsmidКүн бұрын
As long as you are looking out the window and maintaining traffic separation, you can practice many approaches as you like. You just can’t log them as approaches.

I just signed up for my instrument rating the other day I’m already confused with Victor airways.
@trent_dyrsmid6 күн бұрын
Think of them like freeways in the sky. You have to get an on-ramp and then you go down the airway and you get an offramp. KZbin will be filled with explaining them in more detail.

15 hrs of the 40 has to be with a instructor? Can you please elaborate, I’ve got 48 hrs now under the hood with an instructor are you saying I can use a safety pilot for the remaining 35 hrs.
You don't have to have a 3rd class medical. In the US, BasicMed allows you to obtain an IRA rating...

Don’t forget about the most important tool in aviation, networking. Join your local EAA chapter and I guarantee you will make friends that will last a lifetime, and they own planes, so can you. They have regular meetings, community events (we’re having a chili Cookoff next Thursday!) and someone is always willing to fly with you for little to zero cost. Joining a flying club is also an excellent way to meet other pilots and have access to well equipped and maintained aircraft at a fraction of the cost of owning, unless you buy a cheap experimental like I did. Most flying clubs have multiple aircraft and monthly dues of 150.00 to 250.00 and sell time from 50.00 an hour for a basic 150, all the way up to multi-engine. They also almost always have CFI’s that can work on your ratings with you. Last but not least, look at experimental aircraft. If it has an N number (not a part 103 ultralight), you can log the time. You can find experimental aircraft for less than a used car. There are ways to even perform your own maintenance and annual condition inspection without the cost of an A&P IA.
