Compared to Boston's MTA trolley system Melbourne stops seem every 100 feet. :) Makes it much more convenient for passengers but takes the rapid out of rapid transit. Still, a wonderful trip through the city. PS I love the color [colour] scheme of these trolleys. Quite pretty.
@tressteleg15 жыл бұрын
Some stop spacings are a bit close in the suburbs, but especially in some areas like the Toorak end of the 58, wealthy residents complain if their stop is removed. In the offpeak and with a frequency of around every 10 minutes here and there stops are bypassed because nobody wants to get on and off. Additionally drivers are obliged to exactly follow the timetable times, especially in regard to running more than one minute early so have to ‘drag the road’ to slow down. In street running, you can’t exactly stop where you like to wait for the clock. As for Boston, one evening maybe 7pm there was a long wait for a Trolley and when it came, it was two coupled with a person in the second one just to check tickets. It would have cost absolutely nothing extra to run the cars separately and halve the wait between services. So all systems have woolly thinking at times. 😊

how does the 7 second T light work at 3:46?
@tressteleg14 жыл бұрын
TheGoldTitan Quite simple really. The tram puts out a radio signal which is detected by a wire loop in the road like how traffic lights detect cars. When the lights end one phase but before the next phase starts, a white T light appears for 7 seconds for the tram. The driver moves off and even if the T light goes out before the tram is across the intersection, that does not matter. Normally during these 7 second lights, no other traffic is moving.
@TheGoldTitan4 жыл бұрын
@@tressteleg1 Thanks for the explanation. That sounds quite simple to implement, I wonder why it is not used on more intersections. Do you think it saves a lot of time?
@tressteleg14 жыл бұрын
TheGoldTitan Traffic light programmers tend to be arrogant kings who refuse to be told anything and in Melbourne to date nobody has forced them to give trams absolute priority.

The Dudley St. sidings seemed to have been turned into car parking. Do they get used for trams?
@tressteleg15 жыл бұрын
Yes I noticed that. Around 1990 while driving for South Melbourne I used to occasionally to do a City Short run in the afternoon peak between Dudley St siding and Domain Rd. At least once I had to park a B class there to ‘get it out of the way’ for 10 or so minutes. But if no timetabled service uses it now, it would just be a useful dumping spot for a dud tram to sit till taken away.
@leenovakovic51785 жыл бұрын
tressteleg1 Thank you! I’ve walked past there and wondered what their use was, interesting.

I was following this trip on google maps and a little confused at turn from Flinders Ln (at 6:07). The video says "turn into Flinders St" which confused me as both these roads are parallel (according to google maps). Is this actually William St? Tnx :)
@tressteleg15 жыл бұрын
I just watched the section of the video and the wording is all correct. Flinders Street is parallel to Flinders Lane. The tram goes under the railway, across Flinders Street with the other tram lines into the start of Market Street then does the left turn into Flinders Lane and then the right turn into William Street. Maybe you are getting a little confused by the green words which are the name of the approaching tram stop, and are often in another street different from the name of the tram stop.
@busdriver12615 жыл бұрын
@@tressteleg1 Thanks for that. As you may have guessed, I am not a native of Melbourne (I am in Perth FWIW). Last year I had to navigate public transport in Sydney for the company I work for. I was putting myself in the position of a newbie learning the routes which I had to do last year. I've always had a soft spot for Melbourne and thanks for sharing your exploits with us :)

Sorry about your Sydney ordeal. I bet you were glad to get back to Perth!
@tressteleg15 жыл бұрын
I must apologise. The wording on the video IS WRONG naming the right turn as into Flinders St whereas it certainly is into William St. it used to be possible to add a caption to existing videos but KZbin took that away a few years ago. I’ll blame the mistake on a ‘Seniors Moment’ 😊
@jingles954 жыл бұрын
It is indeed William St. Props to you tresselteg for admitting the error. Love these vids.

What's the difference between route 58 &route 58d
@tressteleg15 жыл бұрын
Notice that it is going to Essendon DEPOT. Any destination ending in d is going to a depot, not the usual end of the line. If the route number ends in a, it is also not going to the usual terminus but reversing somewhere sooner, usually.

It means the tram is only going halfway. For an example this tram is only if it goes to Orrong road then it turns around and go back to West Coburg or Essendon tram depot.
