Even though this was made to be dismissive, I believe this is basically what happens. Think about everything they said - sprinkle in our messaging, we need something to blackmail you with(child rape - which is known to happen, we just don't know the full extent), don't cross us or we'll arkancide you, etc. There is some obvious exaggerations, but I 100% believe this generally does happen. This is what people mean when they say 'sell your soul for success.' You don't literally meet a demon and sell your soul, you meet people who are metaphorically demons and sell your soul to them by voluntarily committing a moral failure, which is irredeemable and seals your fate (or in a physical sense - blackmail).
