The thing about the translation is absolutely true. I live in germany and the difference between hearing Trump himself and hearing a german translators voice calmly paraphrasing his word in coherent sentences is huge.

I mentioned this somewhere else, but the Daily Show have done a translation issue skit on their show with the actual translators. You should check it when you get the chance. It's called: The Translators - Interpreting Donald Trump: The Daily Show on youtube. It's a great example.
@thelioness89917 жыл бұрын
Well you could for example listen to any of his speeches with german translation over it and compare the tone of voice. Like this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5_QXmdtrqt2Y8k. To make it more clear what I mean here some points: 1. When Trump repeats himself "We are gonna win, win, win, win!" the translator usually just translates: "We are gonna win." 2. When he uses wrong adverbs like "bigly" or otherwise wrong grammar the translator translates it into grammatically correct german. 3. When he doesn't use coherent sentences and veers widely off what he was originally saying the translator does his or her best to transform that into somewhat coherent sentences. I could probably find and example of this and I may add one later. 4. The way Trump enunciates and pronounces some words or just his general manner of speaking is just its own kind of weird so having that replaced by a matter of fact voice german translator already makes him seem less crazy. Sorry I didn't cite any specific example. I hope you can still kind of understand what I mean. :)

Suffragette true. I recall a story from a while ago about a "dilemma" translators were having with him as to how they should translate him.

The discussion at the end about how Trump translates into other languages REALLY hits home. I have read foreign newspapers where Trump's "BUILD THE WALL!" and "LOCK HER UP!" craziness got translated into: "construct a security barrier" and into "have her face legal proceedings". Trump is totally SANE when politely translated.

I think Trevor has a really excellent point here. Usually these translations aren't word for word because that would sometimes make even the most properly spoken sentences incoherent. But since Trump's statements are originally incoherent, they get translated in a way that makes it look like he's not a complete rambler that can't even finish a thought.
@SalahEddineH7 жыл бұрын
This is truer than you think. I'm Moroccan, so both my parents, who speak no English, only listen to news in Arabic and French. I seriously had to sit them down and show them videos of his speeches in English, and translate word for word to them, to make them realize how incoherent (and batshit crazy) he sounds.
@Alresu7 жыл бұрын
Here in germany it's the same. I hear one of his speeches in english and a few hours or days i see the same speech with a german speaker who 'translates' it and suddenly he sounds like every other politician. Even weirder, if they just use subtiltes, and i have to think: "Guys, we hear him. Even without understanding english you can hear, that this is not how he talks."

@martinaee7 жыл бұрын
The point he made about how Trump sounds he's speaking Arabic in English to people in the Arabic speaking world was hilarious, but also terrifying. I guess it's like that for any nation, but specifically with Trump a lot of people in other democratic nations may not get how insane and dumb he is. Where do you live and how do most people there view him?
@berkerdinc43177 жыл бұрын
martinaee I live in turkey and here people who identify primarily as muslims usually don't like him and people who identify primarily as turks usually like him but since most people rely on translations of his speeches they think he is just another politician, they don't really get it when i tell them this guy talks like a six year old narcicist...
@Tamaki7427 жыл бұрын
That's what translators are having so much problems with. Like they have the job of making the words understandable, but they also have to try to keep in the nuance and the style of speech. That's the hardest thing to do with Trump, because keeping the latter parts means it's going to be incoherent in other languages.

They're so cute together. Also, am I crazy, or does Seth look kinda smitten? I mean, not in a gay way, just in a he seems really impressed by Trevor and genuinely enjoys his company kinda way. I think they feed off of each other much better than Stephen Colbert would, cuz they're softer and more subtle in some of their jokes. Although I respect Stephen, he's always come off as slightly more arrogant to me, and I never actually laugh out loud as much. He's better w Jon Stewart cuz they both have that one-man show vibe and stage presence. Whereas Seth and Trevor are more playful and easy-going, and hence better talk show hosts. (Just my opinion, ofc!)

I can relate with the freedom of speech part. In my country it would be impossible to see anyone making fun of our prime minister on mainstream media unless you wanna go to jail. And the opposition will have no exposure whatsoever let alone open debate like in the US. The internet saves us since you cant have total control over it but even our social media postings would risk us a jail time sometimes. It is hard to have a leadership change here. But with all the freedom American have, they still cannot decide what is the best for them 😑
