So, for context, Ren has Lyme disease, but by a tick as a teen and the medical professionals he first saw misdiagnosed him, told him it was all in his head, so it got worse, and as he saw all his friends have an eventful and fun twenties, he was bed-bound for years and it caused different levels of psychosis. He took that time to learn more about his guitar and songwriting. He's been a musician for a long while, in fact I think he was working with Sony before he was diagnosed, due to his being bed-bound, they dropped him. I might have a few things missing here, but this guy's got the walk to back his talk.

I can so relate. I got Lyme when I was travelling in Australia in 1997. I had no idea what the bullseye rash and flu was that I was experiencing . After being bedridden for two weeks I then carried on travelling and got worse year on year until 2012. I was nearly dead! It’s taking me years to heal with holistic medicine. It’s brutal on so many levels. Family and friends don’t believe you. The medical system totally dismisses you. The Australian government they even have Lyme there. I ended up going round and round and round in circles. I realising more and more that I need to share my story. There are so many people suffering with no help and living such crap lives because of how they’ve been failed.

He's a lyrical and performance genius (his solo piano playing is exquisite) who truly captivates his audience and draws them into his world, yet so authentic and humble. Mostly because, we all have inner demons that we face. Whether it's doubt, self esteem issues, addiction or mental illness. It's relatable to people in all walks of life. "Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar over the past month; it went viral and garnered more than 2 million views in a couple of weeks, but he has been creating great music for more than 10 years. His latest release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." I am 57 y/o, and I only recently learned about Ren and have gone down this rabbit hole ever since. Many of the subjects, experiences, and emotions expressed in his songs touch me on a very personal level because I can relate to and identify with many of his struggles. A little background on Ren that I gathered from the internet. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, he began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue. His illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours a day. Ren was initially diagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome. It would take seven years before he was finally correctly diagnosed with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and brain damage. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. He is currently in Canada for more treatments. He plays multiple instruments, has amazing vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. Check out the trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet." It is haunting and has an unforeseen conclusion; WATCH THEM IN THE STATED ORDER, as this is the flow of the storyline or just watch “The Tale of Jenny & Screech (Full),” which includes “Violet’s Tale at the end. It is another example of Ren’s genius and a master’s class in storytelling. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice while addressing mental health. I would watch the official live music videos. "Chalk Outlines" is one of my favorite songs right now. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation. His performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling”), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”) are all great. Ren's performances as a member of the band "The Big Push" (which unfortunately broke up) are awesome and well worth checking out, both the busking (street performances) and their live recordings. Ren's covers of "I Shot the Sheriff," "Oh My Woman," "Wade in the Water," "An Englishman in New York," and so many others are equally impressive and really give you a sample of his vocal ability. Ren just released his latest single, “Sick Boi.” In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next 3-6 months that he expects to be gone. "Sick Boi" is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren."

At 17 he was misdiagnosed with schizophrenia and given psychotropic drugs which exacerbated the problem. Int turned out he actually has Lyme disease. He was actually signed to Sony just prior and they dropped him when his condition was diagnosed and so he never made any recordings.

No problems with the pauses. I did exactly the same thing the first time I listened to it. I love complex lyrics that need to be broken down. I also love his acting ability, Ren is a Storyteller in the best way, he pulls you into the songs and you'll find that there are different storylines with their own characters. @@TrevandErin Agreed. I'm 50 now. I was a studio engineer through the 90s and a bit into the 2000s. I've recorded a lot bands. Some top 40, some are not. I've also worked on music for film and TV. Hey there, great reaction video. I am so happy you got emotional. I feel like anyone who has struggled with anything can relate to this. I read alot of your comments, but wanted to clarify. This video, and all of his videos, are one takes. there are different camera angles, but everyone one of his videos are one takes. He was bed ridden for years because of lime disease, which is why the point that he stands up is so breath-taking. It is him saying he can, and will, stand on his own two feet. And he continues to struggle with his disease today unfortunately. Thank you for paying tribute to Ren. He has made a huge impact on my life and countless others through his art.

Having been following Ren for a few years now, I am so glad more people get to discover his music - or might I say « his Art » as some of his work, as Hi ren, is so much than music imo. As some have already pointed out, the Trilogy of Jenny, Screech and Violet (to be watch in this order, there is a video regrouping all of them on his channel) is another great piece to discover, as are Money Game part 1 and 2 (and really, so much more of his work). Oh! I forgo to mention it, but he also just released « Sick Boi » a few days ago, which is kind of in the same line as « Hi Ren », even though in a pretty different style, where he portrays the struggles he had to go through while being misdiagnosed for years and things he wish he could have told his therapists and others at the time. In a fairly different way, it is another piece that speaks a lot and that I think you might enjoy. :)

@@TrevandErin I'll be there for it! :D As for « Sick Boi », an interesting fact I've learned recently is that he used to work with at label (I believe it was Sony) during that period, but they dropped him for reasons (I've read a few things through comments, but haven't verified them so I won't go there). This knowledge helped me to understand a part of the « Sick Boi » song as to « why » it is in there (the first time I listened to it without knowing about the label thing, I didn't really get what I thought was a change of subject in the song, but now that I do, I completely understand how it is actually deeply related to the rest of it), so before you watch it, I thought I'd share. :)

I've been watching reaction videos to this song for 10 days now and am working on a very long blog post which might turn into more than one, not only about the song, but the reactions its causing, and I want to say yours has moved into my list of favorites. I LOVED how you took so much time with the words, rewinding, pondering, speaking; I LAUGHED in the middle where you became conscious of how many times you had said, "bro" (very endearing, self-deprecating/self-aware humor!); and I was MOVED by how much the song moved you. Welcome to the Ren rabbit hole. He has a huge catalog of music just as good on Ren makes music. He use to busk a lot on the streets of Brighton. He is in the process of recovering from a long term illness that had been misdiagnosed for years. It turn out to be Lyme disease which brought on the many other difficulties he has been dealing with because it took to long to treat him. It basically sets in motion the inability for your body to fight off any infections and that is only the one thing it causes. Any way I hope you enjoy reviewing all his many videos he has on line. Let us all pray for sunshine and healthier days in the New Year.

Ren is self taught on the guitar. You’re nailing it on his situation. He was misdiagnosed by the doctors and was being treated with so many different drugs for years while his Lyme disease was crippling him physically and mentally.

I think it's right up there with Freddie Mercury at Live Aid, or the Pink Floyd reunion for Live 8, or Hendrix on the Lulu show, or the Adele Tiny Desk concert - it's as good as any of them.
