What you fail to see is that Trey Lance was already a starting quarterback for the 49e'rs in his second season in the NFL. That is how much trust the 49er's owner, manager and coaches had to make him the starter. His first game was in a rain storm where the 49er defense seemed to give up the second half and let Chicago score too many points. Then he gets his foot broken in the first half of the second game to end his season.

What is missing by most of you analysts about Trey Lance is that he was already a starting quarterback for the 49er's in his second season as an NFL quarterback. If it hadn't been for that season ending injury in his second game, he wouldn't be a Dallas Cowboy. He would have been learning how to play good football as the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49r's with Brock Purdy as the backup.

Ya, lets hope in 2025, his 5th year in league, he can achieve like Brock Purdy in his second year. In 2023, Purdy coming off major arm surgery, finished 1st in 14 of 36 QB categories according to Yahoo Sports. Such as #1 in Passer Rating, Yards per Attempt, Completed Yards per Attempt, QBR, also top 5 in more categories such as 5th in Total Passing Yards while being 20th in pass attempts. Yep, easy to see SF made the wrong decision.

If Trey Lance didn't get a season ending injury in this second game as the starting 49er quarterback, we wouldn't even know who Brock Purdy is today. It was Jimmy G who replaced Trey after he got injured, not Brock. Then Jimmy G gets injured which led to Brock's story. Then the 49er's got Christian McCaffrey that made a big difference in how they could use Brock to hand the ball too or throw to him. Trey Lance would have had the same team to play with if he hadn't been injured. Because the 49er's were playing good football by the time Brock got his chance to play, even Jimmy G and Colin Kaepernick would have looked good with that team, the only quaterbacks other than Brock who had taken the 49er's to a Super Bowl since Steve Young in 1995. I'm sure Trey Lance would have also taken the 49er's to the Super Bowl like Brock did in February of 2024.

@@BradHolkesvig Wow. Ya, I was wrong that Purdy was 1st or top 5 every QB stat because of McCaffrey. Or the fact SF O-line was ranked in the 20's for pass protection gave him the #1 ranking in passes under pressure and non pressure. SF gave up 3 1sts and was happy to get a fourth from Dallas, since SO many teams wanted him. It is ranked as one of footballs worst trade/draft decisions for a reason. Lance has had to change his throwing motion just to compete. Also, he cannot process defenses and see past his 2nd read was the reason only one team wanted to trade for him.

He’s a project that didn’t work out even with an elite offense around him and one of the best offensive minds in football as his HC. He can’t make routine NFL throws with accuracy. I’m a Niner fan and we’ve heard these rumors every year about Trey looking great. In his rookie training camp Niner beat writers said Trey was the best looking rookie QB they had ever seen. Then we saw the clips of him working out with Mahomes and all of this talk about how Trey had changed his throwing motion, etc. Trey is garbage.
