I went from full length headers and 2 1/2 duals in my 67 cougar with a 306, I went to tri ya with full 2” exhaust, car ran much better. They take up less room and if carrol liked em there’s a reason for it. Love them!

I’ve had some of these on my 66 Mustang that has a 300 ish horsepower 289 and they have worked really well for a long time and sound beautiful.

There is a pressure wave back up the pipe because the exiting speed of the exhaust , creates a vacuum in the pipe , and also, there is 14.7 lbs. Per square inch of air pressure pushing back on it. Hope this gives someone an insight into what goes on that no one else is talking about. There is at least 2 formulas for finding the correct header pipe size, length, collector length etc.

You know im not sure if they are or not to tell you the truth 🤔 I do have the best helper 😁 Strike stuff is still ongoing but we are still fighting strong 💪

Can not beat a good set of tri y headers.

It's unfortunate that there are fewer people that make Tri-Y Headers for the LS. On my next build I would to use a twin turbo setup acting like a true dual exhaust. With 4 cylinders for one turbo and the other 4 cylinders for the other. Having each turbo exhaust going to its own muffler or resonator and exhaust tip without a cross over of any kind. That way, I wouldn't need to contend with the transmission or driveshaft to fit a cross over.

I need to make some like that for a pinto, but with 351w firing order.

Do you know if the Tri-Y headers would fit on a '90s truck with the 5.0 or is the bolt pattern different?

It freezes? Dang it! I got them from GSTP auto parts for $159.99 included all the fasteners, gaskets, and a couple of reducers 🙂

A lot old of Nailhead and later 215/Rover headers would have 2 long tubes going into a 2-1 and mating with the other 2 tubes into in final bigger collector, like a split manifold on a straight 6.

Cool vid. You should check out stepped headers and how they could work WITH tri Y's.

How does a guy figure out primary, secondary, and collector lengths for true tuned tri y headers based on firing order as well as diameters for each?

That is math way above my level 😅

@stuffofstuff3 yaaaaa I did my best lol But when it comes to calculating fluid dynamics through a pipe and volumes of exhust pulses.....I lose it after that 🤣

@@newguysgarage6802 I can definitely get that lol part of me is like "Man I oughta just make my own headers😤" and the other part of me is like "How tf am I going to figure this out🤨"😅

The REAL best exhaust would be a 180-degree tri-y, but instead of merging each side into their own collector, take the 4 resultant first merges and merge THEM into one big collector. If it were a flat-plane V8, it'd be like cutting the collector off of two 4-2-1 inline 4 headers and merging all four "2s" into one BIG collector of their own for the whole engine. In other words, an 8-4-1 even pulse header.
@newguysgarage680210 ай бұрын
Well if we are talking about the ULTIMATE exhaust system then you would want pipes that can change lengths based on RPM 😃 ......but.....well you would need to find a reliable way of doing that 😅😂 But it would be slick 😎👌

0:22 , no the biggest question i have is why are they called TRI-y when there is clear only TWO y's??
@newguysgarage68026 ай бұрын
@@mikeholguin84 because there are 3 Y's 2 pipes going from the head to a common pipe makes the 2 y's Then the 2 common pipes going into the collector make the 3rd Y lol

@@newguysgarage6802 ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!! Now I see it lol!!!!? Dang man, of course! The two y's make the third, that's pretty nifty haha.

Tri Y headers trump 4 into 1 headers...imo...oh and a cross pipe between the two exhaust collectors may help(??)...

Yes! Cross-over pipe or actually just running a large diameter single exhaust really picks up power over duals 😁

Because Tri-y’s were simple to manufacture and engine builders didn’t know any better. Then came Jere Stahl and now we know better. And….. you’re dead ass wrong about primary tube diameter! Each impulse is a sound wave. A sound wave will expand to the diameter of the primary tube. As big as you can go is best. Eliminate back pressure. Think of what you said about savaging at the collector. If the pulse can’t seal in a large diameter primary tube, it sure as hell can’t seal in the large collector tube. 🤣🤣. But it does! You can’t have it both ways. The only reason to go with a Tri-Y is if you can’t afford a proper equal length header or you don’t have room. Again. Not much of this matters with a pushrod V8. That 302 is not capable of reaching an RPM where impulse tuning is going matter.
