At 62, and training religiously for 40 years using high volume higher rep range to heavy weight lower rep range and less sets I feel best and motivated with sessions of 45-60 minutes 10-12 rep range and with enough weight to work hard in that rep range w moderate sets i.e chest, back, legs in 10-12 sets and smaller groups 6-9 set range hitting each part on a 5 day schedule - essentially 4 on 1 off and sessions at 45 -60 minutes max. Thanks Jay for all you do!

I tend to remain imprisoned in the 70s and 80s. Although I appreciate the new eras, at 50, I will often 'refuge' in the nostalgia of my childhood and adolescence times. So, for your question about the best abs, my reflex is to go to the Frenchman Serge Nubret. I know, it's old but darn it, he can be seen as a pioneer of sorts. When it comes to training, as I get older, I realize that less is more. But there is a minimum limit not to be exceeded of course. If I go at least 3x week, I am able to maintain without losing too much. 4x week is ideal for me. Each muscle once a week. On the other hand, I cheat a little during each workout: when I'm ''finished'', I pump one or two muscles with two or three light sets, just to get a little blood flowing. Last of your points: your neighbors must now be used to seeing you walking in the street. ''Hey, look Marge, here's Jay talking his walk...'', ''Hey Nicole, did Jay film his walk yet?'', ''Hey Pete, the big blond dude is talkin' his walk again...'', ''Hey Norm, Jay is looking at our driveway again...'', that kind of thing. Some even have to watch the videos just to admire their houses... I imagine it's also reassuring to see a juggernaut ex-Mr Olympia keeping a watchful eye on the neighborhood... Another nice Jaywalk. These things are addictive.

I’ve spent 5 years as a serious training natural bodybuilder and I’m finally approaching what I feel is the ideal model for growth. As a novice, it was all about emulating Arnold and doing high volume training with tons of superfluous volume and cardio. I got an impressive look, but the strength plateaued. I then didn’t want to accept that Mike mentzer was right, but started to lean more his way toward high intensity, low volume training. I opted for a model similar to where Dorian Yates ended.. somewhere in between. Less is definitely more. I’m running a 4 day split with the muscles divided in a sensible way that allows me to bring high intensity to each large muscle group before fatigue sets in. 4 on one off with the off being light cardio is the answer. It allows for the ideal recovery time but also keeps the body secreting hormones continuously for growth which is essential to a success as a natural. With this model, I’m confident I’ll create a world class physique. I’ll never have the sheer size of people on gear, but I can achieve phenomenal quality and aesthetics. Edit: I wanted to go into sets and numbers a bit. 3-5 heavy compounds sets on the muscle group. Heavy compounds done using 4-8 rep sets to failure. Then 3-5 sets accessories sets to failure 8-12 reps. For instance, chest day, flat bench 315x4, then dips 340x6, then incline dumbbell 100x6. Then I’d Segway to accessories. French press, cable push downs, then pec flies 8-12. After that, chest is done. I can get away with 45-1:15 in the gym with this method. And look.. if it works naturally.. the system works. This took me from plateau at 315 to 370 bench. Still growing and learning!
@Bubs588 ай бұрын
Agreed as a natural I’ve experimented with different training styles but most recently have moved into a low volume, high intensity split only with 1 or 2 working sets per exercise taking them to failure and have seen my best results. I go with a 3 on 1 off, 2 on 1 off split to split my leg day into two sessions to focus on quads more day and hammies the other since legs have been my main area that lacks development, which was my own fault early on not training them the right way or near enough lol.
@Austin_tatious8 ай бұрын
@@Bubs58 that’s what I’m doing as well with the 2 sets which was inspired by Yates. The first set is moderate difficulty, then the second is gun to your head failure.

35-40 minutes in the gym. Normally do 3 sets of about 7 or 8 exercises, whole body, training one specific part, e.g. legs: squats, hamstrings: lying curls...biceps: one type of curl,...back: a row or pull down or chin up. Basically whatever I feel like doing or what is available if it's busy. Just maintenance basically

I workout for 2 plus hours 5 days a week on average. Every rep and weight range, athletic cardio and slow pace cardio. I also train abs 5 days a week. I try to do obliques one day and crunches the next. I do carb backloading (low during the week and high carbs duing the weekend) and that has helped me gain muscle and strength while cutting and I'm natural, it's just that effective.

Its probably good to cycle the volume and intensity. When trying to make progress it seems the more work the better. A minimalist approach seems to be helpful for longevity. There are also mini cycles and macro cycles(Ronnie Coleman was taking 3 months off after the Olympia competitions). I can remember changing up the volume every few weeks to make progress.

Jay also I watched a video from 4 years ago you and Dave out shopping at Walmart. You guys just killed it. You may ask why shopping for groceries and other stuff. Or why Jaywalking. But look at it this way. Rod Stewart added Maggie May to his album as a last minute add in they expected nothing. It became his first smash hit. Stewart says that if he hadn’t added it we might have never known who Rod Stewart was …
