A simple how to for servicing Triang/Hornby X03/04 type motors.
These simple robust motors don’t need a lot but this simple service shows you how to keep them in tip top condition.
Never ever use anything abrasive on the commutator, this is made from delicate thin copper and if you scratch it up, it will wear out faster as well as wear your brushes.
Silky smooth is the key.
There is a fuller guide to re-magnetising on my channel.

Hi Mike. Not an option I had considered, but worth a try. I did think of conductive paint, but thought it just would not work. at all. I will get some and report back. Thanks for the heads up-------------------------Regards Steve.

Hi Mike. The avenue I am considering is exactly as you suggest. I have tried some brushes for power tools, even those with a copper coating, but to no avail, so now perhaps I shall try copper plating the carbon myself to get something that will solder. Regards Steve Hollands.

I’m here because I almost burned out the motor. Although I do give the motor an occasional service, I have just discovered the coating on the outer iron core bit to be flaking, I’d left the loco running, it had come to a halt and when I returned it was sat there buzzing away. The coating had come loose and jammed itself between the frame and armature. I have cleaned the rest of the coating off the iron cores and given them a very, very thin coat of Araldite, it has to be thin, otherwise it bonds the armature to the frame. Anyway, it’s ok now, up and running again. I can’t do a resistance check as yet, I don’t have my meter with me.

Hello Mike. Fascinating video and have learned much from this and others. Many years ago I recall being able to replace the small carbon pad located on the motor brushes, as they are just soft soldered, but sourcing the carbon cubes, or anything suitable is hard to do. I also have a large collection and the need to replace brushes beckons and at commercial rates is going to cost a bomb. Any thoughts on where one could source carbon cubes that would do, even if they are a bit oversize? Kind Regards Steve Hollands.

Hi and many thanks for the kind comments. I am over on Model Railways Unlimited now, your question is one I am considering myself, I think it will be a case of carefully selecting something from China and cutting them to size www.google.com/search?q=carbon+rod+for+motor+brushes&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwiDh_j1sZnrAhUD-4UKHX2dAMQQ2-cCegQIABAA&oq=carbon+rod+for+motor+brushes&gs_lcp=CgNpbWcQAzoECAAQQzoFCAAQsQM6AggAOgcIABCxAxBDOgYIABAFEB46BggAEAgQHjoECAAQGFDs3wJYirsDYK2_A2gAcAB4AIAB7wKIAfcNkgEGMjcuMy0xmAEAoAEBqgELZ3dzLXdpei1pbWfAAQE&sclient=img&ei=TdQ1X8OsKIP2lwT9uoKgDA&bih=907&biw=1680#imgrc=CQfIVs8qUq9d1M&imgdii=SbmH-47TJqFnMM

Can you actually remove the spindle and wiring loom on these motors. I have stripped the motor down but the spindle still seems trapped between the front and back. I have 2 motors that the wiring has gone so they are shorting but I have one good motor but the brush arm holder has broken so want to canibalise and make one good motor

Hi Mike, why does the red insulator shield the second of the brushes? I know that sounds a stupid question, but if you could explain the setup to me that would really help
@MikesMovies
@MikesMovies 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, The body of the motor and so therefore the top brush retainer/spring is connected to the chassis of the loco and forms the return path for the current, therefore one of the brushes needs to be insulated from the spring retainer and takes its supply from the wire that comes from the loco pickup plate.
@Mcsterl
@Mcsterl 3 жыл бұрын
@@MikesMovies Brilliant thank you. I'd got it into my head that the brushes formed two points of contact going "in", but that is on reflection nonsense, thank you for the info, head hurts less now haha.
