Today we taste and review Laphroaig 10, Laphroaig Quarter Cask, Laphroaig Select, Cairdeas Madeira, Cairdeas Cask Strength Quarter Cask and Laphroaig Triple Wood.
If you want to toast the channel:
1) Upload your video toast to KZbin.
2) Mark it as "unlisted" if you don't want the video to appear in public search results.
3) Put a link to the video in our comments with the hashtag "#toast".
Check out the Instagram account @whiskey_marketing_school
** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax-deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
11:27 - boof
austinwhiskyvault.com/whisky-d...
** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
**A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

SO happy to see you guys doing Laphroaig!! Just got my first bottle of the 10 recently and loved the process of working through the smoke to get to the more nuanced flavors. I also had a mooch experience at a restaurant that was mistakenly shipped the Triple Wood instead of the 10, so they were charging the price for the 10, but pouring the TW!! LOVED IT!!

Hi Dan and Rex, thanks for the great tasting video! We do whiskey and tea pairings and the Laphroaig 10 is one of our go-tos, however, our upcoming tasting is in Quebec and it is not yet available there. They do however have both the Select and the Quarter Cask, So I am looking at either of these as a 'substitute' for the 10 year. I have already done my pairing and tasting research with the 10 year and I am hoping the quarter cask will be an easy swap in :) What we do is select teas from our inventory and we have folks sip a given tea, then sip the paired whiskey, then return to the tea. The transformation is exquisite! Based on the tasting notes in your video, it sounds like either the Select or QC might actually do even better with our tea pairing. Your video was extremely helpful. While we do have smokey teas, we have found that Shu Pu'er tea pairs really nicely with Laphroaig! Happy sipping and I'll let you know how the pairings turn out. Cheers, Phil

I for some reason can't stand talisker... that said I bought it and 3 other scotches when I tried scotch whiskey for the first time first time. out of them Lagavulin was the only one I actually liked... a few weeks ago I got ardbeg corryver..., love it (it still slaps me around tho, but I still love the taste). I am thinking about getting a Laphroaig but dont know which one to get.

@@Bawrabawla I started with the 10 and I didn't regret it. The other ones add more complexity but I am happy that I started with what I consider the basis of that distilery. Some people will call the 10 simple and I totally get it, but I would call it clean. After 12 years of drinking whiskys still one of my favourites.

In Doublin, Ireland on June 18th, 1875 a fire broke out in a distillery causing some 5000 barrels of whiskey to burst sending thousands of gallons of whiskey flooding through the streets, on fire and picking up all bits of charred wood and ash along the way. The citizens were so preoccupied by the free whiskey that 100% of the 13 deaths were due to alcohol poisoning. That whiskey, being both literally on fire and having charcoal and ash swept along it probably still tasted less like fire than Laphroaig 10

Today was the day! I have been slowly building myself up to the 10. Redbreast 12 Cask Strength is my favorite whisk(e)y at the moment and i've been inching closer and closer through the flavor range hoping it would help me enjoy the 10 more. The first time I tried a peated scotch at a tasting I almost threw the glass back at the jerk who thought any human should drink such a thing. After getting used to Oban 14 which I now really love I decided it was time to take the jump. I was so pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. I won't go as far to say I'm a peathead now but it gives me a whole new flavor profile to expand into that I actually look forward to. Thanks for all the advice on how to build up to this monster!

The 2018 Fino cask Cardieas is my favourite to date and kicks the Madeira casks butt!! Lore for the price IMHO is just not worth the double cost of the 10, QC , or the select. Now on to Ardbeg!!!!

I've gotten quite a few different scotch single malts over the years, but I've never really treated the whiskeys as anything but cocktail/coke fodder. I recently traveled down the rabbit hole that is youtube whiskey, came across the Whiskey Vault/Tribe and was inspired by Rex and Daniel to properly enjoy my whiskey. I had bottles of Glen Fiddich and Glen Deveron on hand to sip neat, enjoyed it and because Laphroaig kept coming up in their videos, I decided to give it a try today. A Laphroaig 10 year. Maybe I should have watched a video on smoky whiskeys, maybe I should have done this while I was still smoking (I gave up cigarettes/cigars 6 years ago for vaping) but one sip of the Laphroaig and I was re-evaluating my life choices. I can understand how it would go with a cig or cigar but for non-smokers (my wife had the same reaction), it was really off-putting. Going to have to look for smokey whiskey cocktail recipes now...

Ryan H I think your initial instinct still holds up. I have been drinking Laphroaig for decades and can tell you that I’m not alone when I say that Select does not belong in the lineup. It is a much more muted and less nuanced whiskey, that really isn’t what most Laphroaig enthusiasts would expect from their beloved distillery. Seems like an entry whiskey for those who are not comfortable with an intense Islay experience.

Background whisky is not a description I've heard but it just is Laphroaig select. That whisky is my Life Is Strange videogame whisky.

This video was hugely surprising, it was helpful..(jokes) Seriously though, I'm getting low on my Laphraoig select and I was going to get the 10 next, now I don't think i will since they're pretty different, thanks!!

Not sure what the conversation rates are like but I’m in the UK and just picked up a bottle of the 10yr old for £26. Definitely worth it at that price.

I didn't realise I like medicine until I tried Laphroaig. It is pretty sobering to think dettol can taste so delicious when you paired it with peat smoke.

Dang! I literally almost bought a Laphroaig Select the day before this published. I just couldn't quite pull the trigger on an Islay yet. I don't know if I'm ready for that kind of slap. I may have to go back now, since it seems to be the friendly Islay. I haven't had much peated anything yet. I've had some Conemara, Buchanan's and Tomatin. Is there peat in Dalmore 12 and JW Black? I've had those too. I just bought a Magnus (instead of Laphroaig Select, they were very similar in price), but I have yet to get to try it.

Unrelated to this video, but a question for the MBs… just purchased a Heaven Hill BIB bourbon when visiting Kentucky, as they are doing away with this bottling apparently. My question is, it being a screwtop instead of cork, is shelf life of an unopened bottle still somewhat unlimited, or should this not be put into the “collector stash”? Any information regarding this is extremely appreciated! Thanks guys!

Daniel, i started on Monkey shoulder and loved it. Today i saw a bottle of Laphroaig select for £23 and bought it.... Everybody told me Islay would hit me around the face and spank me but I LOVE the smokey flavour, except the Iodine at the end is something i'm not a fan of, (perfectly drinky, the whole bottle went in one night)......... what Islay (or not) is smokey without the medicinal note? I feel like i know what i want now and just want a Peaty whiskey without the medicinal notes. Thanks man

Daniel, so I've had 3 bottles of Lore, and it's my all time favorite liquid. I have always looked for Ardbeg Dark Cove, but cannot find one. How do they compare? Which do you prefer? I'd assume Lore, but interested in the tasting notes of the Ardbeg.

New to the channel, so if you've done it, forgive me (I'll find it). I'd love to see a show focusing on Scottish-owned distilleries.

2 questions: 1. is it the Laphroaig in Peat Monster that gives it the cigarette ash in the finish? 2. I don't get that finish in the triple wood, are there any other expressions that minimize that?

I’m sipping on my Lagavulin 16 while watching this. Trying to decide if I should try the cheaper Laphroaig Select ... for when guests are visiting and I don’t want to share my Lagavulin 16. But, now I’m interested in a bottle of Laphroaig Lore 🥃🤔🥃 #FirstWorldProblems

I had to decide, which expression of Laphroaig I should try next. I already tried the 10 and the Quarter Cask. On my List are the Lore, the Brodir or the An Cuan Mor. And I really dont know what to choose. I desparatly need to find an specialist shop, where I can try before buy.

I love the 10yo.. its medicinal but also has that honey sweet note.. im thinking about getting the lore but its rather expensive. The QC was to... in your face for me.. I found it almost chemical.. i never added water tho.. The laphroaig brodir was an expression i only started to appreciate during the course of the bottle. Now im sad its empty =))

I was super hesitant on the Lore as well due to the jump in price ($100 in my area), I finally broke down and got a bottle and do not regret it at all. Im in the same boat as Daniel in that its by far my favorite Laphroaig (setting aside the rare bottles like the 25yr and 32yr that I cant afford to try).
