The different Rye Malts are created by the kilning process. Once germination begins, it's stopped by kilning (heating) the malt. The levels of color come from the amount of time and heat applied to the grains. You can see the levels by looking at a Lovibond chart for grains. Crystal, typically leaves more unfermentable sugars behind (in beer making, doesn't necessarily apply once distilled) and chocolate malt will be just about burnt leaving nice coffee and dark chocolate flavors behind... again, in beer making, don't know how much is true after distillation. So two fellow MBs (Miranda Cooley and Heather Rosenberry) visited Ohio and Pennsylvania, and when they came back, they surprised me with a bottle of Wigle Rye (the same that Rex hates in this video), and I have to say, it's *really* good. It's much sweeter than I expected and there's a super strong note of bubblegum (specifically Dubble Bubble Bubble Gum) at the end. I know this is an older video, but I wanted to give them a shout-out here for it.

I've lived in Pittsburgh for four years now and during the summer and fall there's always a small street fair on the street I live off of. Wigle always has a little tent set up with free samples of their rye... It's the only time I refuse free whiskey.

Two points: 1) When I started my whiskey journey I was expecting to like bourbons the most for the sweetness and cherry flavors, but I've found myself liking Ryes a lot more, and 2) I was in Pittsburgh this weekend but I didn't have time to get in to Wigle for a tasting, so I'm been really bummed about that. Next time, I'm stopping in for sure.

I tend to lean towards Canadian style rye. I love whistlepig, and the MGP 95/5 supplied to smooth ambler were amazing at cask strength

The only problem is that "rye" has become just another word for whiskey in Canada. They often use the word rye even when it's not a rye lol. (When I was first encountering whiskeys and trying to figure out what I liked, I found I liked Canadian whiskys and thought that my preferred whiskey was rye. But now I've realized rye is my least favorite actually lol)

Hmm, the age-old we dislike rye debate. I typically do not like rye but I do love High West. I suggest you try all of the expressions of High West. It is different then scotch expressions but they do a nice job with their standalone rye, then blending flavor-profiles of many whiskeys to judiciously use rye to build a superior taste.

Please try the Woodinville Whiskey Straight Rye. I don't believe you have a video on that offering from them. To me, it is another one of those unicorn ryes. I get a lot of vanilla and honey on the finish. It is sweet for a rye, but different enough in the category to appreciate what they have made. I think even Rex will enjoy it.. This was the first rye I tried, that I can remember, when my wife and I visited their distillery, and made me think that I was going to be in love with rye whiskies, until I started to try other brands. It ruined all other ryes for me when I found out it was much unlike the others. So when I can find it in stores, I now stock up, as it is hard to come across in my area. Please try it, I don't think you guys will be disappointed. Cheers!

someone needs to send you guys some stuff from hillrock. Its basically dave pickerell's high end/fancy aging distillery. Field to bottle, they malt their own whiskey. Solera age bourbon, double cask rye, and single malt. all amazing, and the bourbon and rye (if you can find it) also come in a couple different finishes. Sauternes finish does something magical to both.
