A friend and I met Richard Tandy and his wife Sheila a few days after seeing ELO in London in 2016, they're were shopping in Waitrose in Kensington. Richard and his wife were so sweet and lovely and we enjoyed a nice 15 minute chat and they couldn't have been more obliging! I recall his wife telling me the highlight of the live show was seeing macho men singing along to Wild West Hero. Definitely one of the best keyboard players of the rock era.

Amazing story James, I'm envious! I had a far less impressive ELO encounter many years ago, when I was driving home from the Midlands and took a detour through the tiny Warwickshire village of Rowington as I'd heard Bev Bevan lived there. Imagine my amazement when I drove past him walking his dogs on a quiet country lane.

Another hero bites the dust. Completely agree with your sentiments on Out of the Blue. Not a single weak track.

He was a fabulous Keyboard player And guitar playerI , I’ve been to quite a lot of ELO concerts . Thankyou John for this tribute. Rest in peace Richard Tandy. 🙏

Richard had been Jeff’s right hand man for decades and the only ELO member who kept working with Jeff after 1986. That says enough about the respect and appreciation he had for Richard. His „magic fingers“ had done so many essential musical contributions. RIP.

Thank you John, for the touching review of his contribution to the Elo sound... As you say it is very hard to narrow them down to 12 song's... Keep up the good work...

Some great song choices John. Jeff was so fortunate in having a musical genius working along side him and such a great friend.

Thank You for your warm tribute to Richard. One of my childhood heroes. Trying to pick a favorite keyboard moment on a ELO record is a difficult call😂 RIP Richard 'magic fingers' Tandy.

Thanks for the tribute John. Rather than get too sad of Richards passing i'd like to think there is plenty to celebrate and appreciate the great contributions he gave to ELO's overall sound, history and legacy.

What no Telephone line in your top 12 Richard at the start of the song is my number 1 if i was to pick 12 amazing start for a song. Yes a truly sad day RIP Richard Tandy.

Thanks John, I enjoyed that. I was only playing my blue vinyl copy of Out Of The Blue a week or so ago. It’s a great album and Richard was indeed a key part of the sound od ELO.

i heard an ELO song on a late night program in the US presumably of "out of the blue" that i thought was the greatest thing i'd ever heard that wasn't by one of the all time greats when i was a kid. i still don't know what it was called but i knew that john would by making a video about this (with loud planes flying overhead) and his take wasn't disappointing. time to listen to "eldorado" all the way through.

Beautifully articulated tribute, very well done, sir! As someone who has played semi-professionally as a "bass player - cum guitar player - cum keyboard player - cum arranger and occasional writer (of tunes, not lyrics!)" (and who excelled in none of the above) I doubly appreciate his contribution to one of the most unappreciated groups of the (relatively) modern era, and I think I understand what Sir Jeff meant in his own tribute (and I am sure it was complimentary!) Thanks for posting this - it must have been quite hard to know how to pitch it, and for my money you got it spot on!

Nice tribute John, we only crossed over on a few tracks but your list was more comprehensive (I should have had Confusion and Waterfalls for sure). I agree he came into his own fully after Eldorado, but don't overlook his incredible piano pyrotechnics on 'From the Sun to the World' on ELO 2, probably his most technically impressive performance on all their records, and all the more amazing given that he hadn't been playing long at this point. Also, I reckon his clavinet on 'Showdown' was probably key to that record's success.

I'm sorry but I must take issue with Richard being #2 when it comes to the ELO sound. Kelly was responsible for the more commercial sound ELO progressed to in Out Of The Blue and Discovery. He was heavily involved in the vocal arrangements and every time you hear high voices in ELO songs that's Kelly. He and Jeff had some sort of falling out that ended up provoking the group ELO II. And if you listen to that group it becomes very apparent that Kelly was a very big part of the ELO sound. Jeff Lynn never gave Kelly the credit he deserved and he never had a thing to say when Kelly died. Other than a weak statement from a publicist. You can't take anything away from Richard, he was a monster on the keyboard. But he was more of a loyal spaniel than an influence on the sound of ELO. RIP, Richard.

Yes Kelly had an influence on the sound (vocally) and yes there was a falling out between Jeff and Kelly which was sad - but to say Richard was "more of a loyal spaniel than an influence on the sound of ELO" is rather unfair I think. It is well documented that Richard worked with Jeff and Louis on the arrangements during the classic period... and was clearly central to the synth dominated sound of Time. Bev backs this up in his tribute to Richard - he was a key element of the ELO sound. Either way, it is sad that Richard has now followed Kelly and the other departed members. They will all be missed.
