Is the chickadee smaller than a house finch. I'm in the Dallas area and there's a tiny bird that feeds on my feeder that's about 1/2 the size of the finch. Has a black cap. It easily spooks but this year there's a pair and one of them sometimes hangs around the tree where the feeder is.
@BadgerlandBirding3 жыл бұрын
Yes! In Dallas, Texas they would likely be Carolina Chickadees!

@Graygeezer4 жыл бұрын
I’d really love to do that with my chickadees and other birds that come to my yard, but I’m really concerned about doing anything to make them more acclimated to human contact. Think seagulls and pigeons coming for your lunch. It’s just not safe for them because so many humans might harm them, accidentally or not.
@BadgerlandBirding4 жыл бұрын
We totally feel you about that. It can become an ethical gray area very quickly. We've included some articles about the ethics of feeding birds in the comments of the video. Our thoughts are that as long as the species is of least concern and it's not putting any person or bird in harms way then it can be done sparingly. We've seen parents come with their kids to feed the Chickadees at that location and they always look on with wonder and I'm sure they'll remember it for the rest of their lives. Hopefully, experiences like this inspire others to conserve our wildlife.
@Graygeezer4 жыл бұрын
All true and maybe I should have included that the birds in the video are already acclimated to humans. You’re not changing their behavior and not putting them in danger, but I think that’s obvious from the video. Everything you said is spot-on. No doubt it’s magical and it probably will win over hearts and minds. That’s important. I’m just conflicted about the wild ones in my neighborhood. Their habitat is changing rapidly and their food sources are drying up. I feel that in my suburban environment it’s better to let the wild stay wild.
