Gandalf/Tolkien is a bad example of what they're trying to say. Not wanting the explanations for things in Tolkien's world is missing the point entirely. Gandalf is a Maia, which means he's basically an angel sent by the Valar specifically to defeat Sauron. A lot of the real meat and substance of Middle Earth is in the details

I dunno. I somewhat preferred Gandalf to be mysterious. Him and the powers he has are far more interesting to me if he's just some mysterious human rather than some powerful overbeing. I mean if he WAS just a human, then the question is raised of how he got those powers and the knowledge that he has, but as a Maiar, it's just 'God gave it to me.' I guess in a sense, it makes his accomplishments less... impactful? I get that he's not the one meant to be doing the accomplishments, he's more of a supportive character to the other protagonists, but still. Personal preference, I suppose.

Traveling _through_ space faster than light is impossible, but space _itself_ can travel at any speed. This phenomenon occurs near the edge of the observable universe as well as at the event horizon of black holes. Based on that idea is the Alcubierre Drive, which warps spacetime around a starship so that space collapses in front of it and expands behind it. Thus, despite the fact that it has not moved at all relative to the space around it, it will be able to effectively travel many times faster than light from an outside perspective.

I believe pyrion is suggesting that as technology advances you really can't say certain things are impossible anymore. I think it's entirely possible that you could travel literally faster than light using some method which we have not discovered.

I remember that I was first put off by Triforce because it has Pyrion in it. I suppose I was a little upset that Simon wasn't there. But I forced myself to listen to the first couple of episodes and I slowly began to love him. His channel is something I visit frequently and I listen to this podcast religiously.

with the faster than light travel, the alcubierre drive is able to expand space and contract it, meaning technically you are not travelling faster than the speed of light, but the space behind you is expanding faster than the speed of light, which obeys the laws of physics, because the laws of physics say that a physical object cannot travel faster than the speed of light, but space is not an object, it is the concept of a derived space that an object can occupy, thus meaning that you can travel to an object faster than light, but only because there is less space between you and the object... let that fuck your brain around for a bit :)

yep. the concept is that you make a sort of moving tunnel through space around you, and fly through that. anything else that's near would be doing the same. But the photons would be going at actual c through your tunnel, so they'll fly past your ship out the end, where-as your ship would be moving at the speed of the tunnel, so it'll then catch up to the photons again... which I guess means you'd be building up a big wake of photons and other particles ahead of you? Of course the problem with actually making a drive like that is that the only theory that would even allow you to contract space requires you to have been there before, which defeats the idea of the drive (which would require you to contract it *in front* before you got there). Or to put it simpler, it's like trying to pull yourself up by your bootstraps.

I'm not sure how true this holds for other types of mystery bags, but the MLP ones from goddamn years ago had codes engraved in the packaging which told you which one was in the bag. There was an Android app and everything, my girlfriend at the time picked a pony, found the corresponding bag code, found a bag with the code on it, and got the one she wanted. It was rather jarring to think they had that information so easily accessible.

The reason nothing can go faster than light is cause Photons dont interact with the Higgs Boson. In simpler terms, it's as if they encounter absolute no resistance, traveling instantly, and nullifying time. If you were a photon, you would be born, and die, at the same instant, because you don't really experience time. Think of it as the cap for time itself.

The thing with living forever is that when living forever Earth would become overcrowded pretty much instantly and it would be unsustainable. Also people have a really hard time coping with change and when living forever there is going to be a lot of change and people would just break down. The other thing which is especially true with putting your brain on a harddrive and living in a video game is that it serves no purpose. Happiness of some people is not worth spending electricity, space and computer power on them unless they are somehow useful. All these theories are all well and good and are very likely to be achievable but I don't think they will be made accessible to everybody.

Wasnt their a dude a few years back. That had an unreal tournament match running with just AI for like 10years? And when he logged in to try it the AI was incredibly progressed. It isnt like a complex ai that makes it like a human wich would be helpfull for in like civ games but still interesting. And apearently a certain file got enormous in that UT game.

I recall the AI self-defense thing from... The Animatrix I think? It was basically a number of short animated films set in The Matrix, and one was about before the whole thing, when some housekeeping robot or somesuch was going to be replaced, and killed its owner because it didn't want to die. Vsauce has a video (I can't remember which has one) and mentions an AI program that self learnt how to play tetris, and when it got to the point of dying (loosing the game)it worked out it could just pause the game indefinitely, so it couldn't die

That is just wrongly applied logic. The AI is programmed to "not lose", not to "win". So it will pause the game not to lose, since that is it's win condition, not actually winning.

Little do they seem to know, Tolkien himself talked about the importance of retaining elements of mystery and unexplained things in writing. If they actually bothered to read his books, they'd probably realize just how sophisticated and beautiful they are. People don't accept that Lost was a fucking dream because Lost was not a fucking dream. Christian literally says everything that happened to them on the island happened. In the last season where they had that kind of alternate reality stuff, THAT was purgatory, and when they met up with each other they remembered what happened to them on the island, and were able to move on to whatever comes next
