Yanis is right on what happened in Congo but needs context. Yanis' portrayal is spun to be anti-Western when that same situation doesn't have to be seen that way. 1) Yes, the CIA killed Lumumba. What happened was this: Belgium funded secessionist groups (Katanga & South Kasai) that already wanted to leave Congo and Belgium had mining deals with them if they gave them arms. Lumumba went to Eisenhower for arms, and the Beligum intelligence team told Eisenhower that Lumumba was a commie (he was a Pan-African socialist but not a commie). As a result, Eisenhower didn't give Lumumba arms. Instead, Lumumba then bought arms from the Soviets in order to quash secession from South Kasai and Katanga. The massacre Lumumba did in South Kasai was so bad internationally that two people - Joseph Kasa Vubu and Joseph Mobutu defected and asked the CIA and Belgium to them crush Lumumba. Since Lumumba bought arms from the Soviets, he was on America's shitlist. So while, Lumumba was killed by the CIA, we need to look at the cold war context and the different actors at play. 2) The reason Glencore controls a cobalt mine in Congo is because the former President of Congo, Kabila is a fucking corrupt idiot. If you understood that deal with Glencore, you would be blaming Kabila not Glencore.

Let's assume the west stops these practices and tries to get resources in western countries, to a higher price, or even get rid of the demand altogether, what exactly is Varoufakis thinking will happen to the mines in Kongo? They will stop mining and nothing good will come of it either or China will simply buyout the whole country. It's like asking what would happen to Norway if they stopped drilling oil and sell it on the world market. The guy went instantly into "muh colonialism and slavery", lady went into "privilege" and identity politics the moment she saw an opening. The moment Konstantin said something self-evidently true, like that the world of geopolitics is a competitive one, they acted offended as if he endorsed something evil, rather than simply describing reality. Those people are the perfect example of why the West is in decline: The ruthless criticism of everything that is, but only if it's the West. The refusal to accept basic facts of the world because they might be "mean". The holier than thou attitude, while at the same time bitching about everything.

28:49 - I think this is probably the strongest point in the whole debate. Recognizing ALL people are fallible and designing society around that reality as opposed to designing a society that requires all perfect human beings, is the only way forward that will result in any progress. Setting the bar to an unachievable height will only result in failure and frustration......which is what we are witnessing in the west.

I read "Adults In The Room" by Varoufakis fairly recently. It was a genuinely interesting read, would recommend... especially interesting is how, after demonstrating how indefatigably corrupt and malicious the power behind the EU really was, how aggressive it could be (easily reaching spy thriller levels of skulduggery), how tyrannical and how antithetical to democracy it openly aspired to be, Varoufakis was still pro-EU by the end of the book. It literally read like, "Here's the story of someone who set fire to my house and stole my wife, and why I'd recommend him as a friend." What was particularly eye-opening was when he pushed against Greece forming economic ties with Russia on the basis that Russia had human rights issues... while immediately cosying up to China, of which he had nothing negative to say. Having read the entire book, I feel it safe to say - he's a clear example of why people need to stay in their lane. He knows economics, can't dispute that. But his broader understanding of the world beyond the science and maths of economics is based entirely on the self-professed influence of his parents, and he seems to be completely oblivious to the fact that his failure to leave their shadow blinds him to reality on a wide array of subjects.

Thank you for taking the time to talk to these people, Konstantin. They are insane!!!!! I'm sure your participation will make at least some of the ones in the audience think about the issues.

Imagine if Douglas Murray, or Ben Shapiro, or Jordan Peterson was on the side of Konstantin during this debate. The crowd, the host, and the two other speakers are all against Konstantin. When Yanis speaks, the host lets him have all the time to do his talking, while if Konstantin is making his point, the host is always rushing him to finish. How come. Oh, I forgot, the host is from BBC. It's a shame that a comedian/podcaster has more sense than the two academics. By the end of the day, when Konstantin asks both of them what better world is better than what has been achieved by Western Dominance, they both can't answer.

Yiannis talks about helping disadvantaged kids so is okay with discriminating based on skin colour and sex instead of socio-economic status. Classic motte and bailey

I would love to know when they plan on "Possitively Discriminating" in University applications since 70+% of student are now female. Since that's their answer for everything...

Certain individuals will go to great lengths, crafting extraordinary accusations against bankers (jews), capitalism (jews), and even the forces of nature (jews), merely to avoid acknowledging the true source of blame ergo Islam.

I don't agree with Konstantin, but "go ahead, Yanis hasn't had enough talking time" was a great rebuttal! 😂

Actually, after getting to the 29 minute mark, I agree with a bunch of what Konstantin says 😂.
