Mules are similar but a bit different to trim due to how the hoof grows. This video shows a little bit of the differences.

Tom Thomas, I wear the back brace for that reason. You do get used to it. Not being afraid of the horses is key. They sense the fear and react to it. They know more about you in the first five sec, than most guys can sense about them. You have respect for them but not fear.

My papa loved mules, especially big mules. His heath went bad and he had to sell the last one he had. sad day for him. He called a male mule a 'horse mule" and a female, a mare mule. I never knew what the real term was for either one. One of the better videos i have seen on horses and shoeing is about mules ;) Ironic isn't it!

I really enjoyed watching this video. I've always been interested in mules and how to treat/train them, and always wanted one, but they are hard to come by in the Berkshires of Mass. I hope that back brace is a little help.

Gina Nall, keeping ahead of the stuff in my truck is a constant job. Shoeing 6 to 10 a day and trimming others. Lots of used shoes. It was time to clean it out again. I know where everything is. If anyone else organized it I’d be lost.😳 but thanks for the offer.

Whats the diffrence from the clippers you used to take off the shoe from the ones you used to actually trim the hoof? 11:14

One is sharp and one is not, If you used sharp clippers to pull shoes they wouldn't be sharp long

The ones to pull shoes are deeper in the jaw. Also the blades are thicker to help pry off the shoe. All shoe pullers have a small knob or flat end on the tip of the handles or(reins). I do keep mine sharp to cut nails ends and clinches. The trimming nipper has thin blades that can easily cut into the hard thick hoof wall. The thin blade does not handle cutting nails like the pullers. A lot depends on the brand and quality. The steel has to be tempered properly. Cheap tools do not hold up for professional application.

I don’t know their breeding. The owner got them years ago from back east somewhere. Belgian mares is a pretty good guess with their color.

With an 18 year old mule, a lot of miles to who knows where, by what owner, it is what it is. I see it all the time, not my job to make sure everyone’s saddle fits their animal.

Ill fitting saddle s will eventually compromise the entire body including the hooves... if you notice it try to mention it to owner in away not to upset the hoof boat so to say ...

Mules can go 10 wks. They grow up instead of out. Circumstances didn’t help which contributed to these getting out of the loop.

I have been keeping ponies for 56 years, and my farriers have always been propperly treating the frog with a hoof-knife that means removing every rotten part of the horn. Crispy bacon, I was counting the rib separations. Each separation adds 3 years to 9. First one makes him 12, 2nd one makes him 15, third one 18. By his teeth and ribs I put him at 17 to 18 years old. Between 10 and thirty is a good guess, give or take 10 years lol.

Thank you! I appreciate your concern! The mic that we use has to be quite close to pick up my voice when I talk and unfortunately it picks up all the ambient noise which includes my breathing! Years of welding and such farm related dust. I assure you I am in good health :) I might resemble the mule part a whit. Helps to get me through a long day tho.

Shanz, I left plenty of foot. He was 8 months long. I’ve trimmed 20,000 horses. My perspective isn’t through a video camera. A single camera doesn’t give depth perception. They weren’t tender.
