Trina, as a fellow gastric bypass peer, I wanted to say how well you are doing and not to be disheartened. Any loss is a positive, regardless how small it is, and I think you have really taken on board what your Drs. and other medical professionals have advised you to do. One bit of advice I will give you is to try your best not to eat out as often as you are. You may think you're going for a lower fat/calorific option by choosing chicken instead of duck for example, but the issue here is what the food you're eating is cooked in. Even a teeny tiny amount of oil is laden with fat and calories and that is not what you're body needs right now, and could definitely trigger dumping or even the diarrhoea and pains you were experiencing. To eat out three times in a week and bring leftovers home at your stage post surgery could make you really, really poorly. I hope you get where I'm coming from and understand that I'm not trying to be unkind or hurtful, I'm just trying to give you some helpful advice from someone 1 year post op (who still struggles with eating out) Best wishes, Emma xxx p.s. Wow, losing 20 kg in 8 weeks is so good! You definitely shouldn't beat yourself up about that, that is really great progress! I've also been overweight most of my life and started my weight loss journey a little over a year ago, did not have surgery tho but changed the way I eat and became more calorie conscious. I've since lost about 35 kg (about 77lb, I think) and am hoping to be able to lose more without having to do surgery, but it is tempting at times so it's interesting following you through this. I've been a silent viewer for a while and really enjoy your personality and content. Wishing you all the best and thank you for documenting your journey and thoughts!

I think you should rewatch your first announcement video and get a refresh on 'why' you decided to go through with the surgery. Then turn those 'whys' into what success looks like for you. From memory, weight loss wasn't the primary motivator for you, it was a byproduct but it sounds like it's become your top success measure. Find the others and focus on those - write a list and make it visible to remind you of them! Congratulations on your journey so far, I'm finding these videos very insightful x

Congrats on the weight lost so far but congrats more on the self awareness. Being able to acknowledge and identify behaviors that can hold you back is huge. Using other things to gauge your progress is a great tool. High five to you!!!

I haven't been on youtube as often this last few months, but I can see a big change in you already. Your face is much thinner and you're looking brighter. Keep it up, you're doing amazing. I've been saving for the surgery for a while, you're an inspiration!

Hi Trina Louise I have been watching you for a couple of years now. But have been glued to you surgery weight loss. It isn't an easy fix, it's very hard work. You look great , don’t weight every day. Keep up the good job. I am 3 months post op and have lost 38 lbs but more importantly I feel so good, lots of energy . Being healthy is my number one goal , weight loss is a bonus.

I’m 3 weeks out and I tried 1 piece of a chicken kabob chopped up last night. I had 2 bites and was VIOLENTLY Sick all night and into today… I was becoming dehydrated from the vomiting… I learned that lesson the hard way! I had some blended chicken tortilla soup today and now I’m working on some chicken and rice soup (not eating the rice just the broth, softened carrots and chicken) the broth feels nice. I honestly think I’m going to be that person who doesn’t get to eat meat for 3 months or more which is very hard for me: I’m a huge keto fan. I eat loads of grilled chicken over green salad normally and curry (no rice) meatball casserole (no pasta) ect… so being such a heavy protein and raw veggie eater this is terribly disappointing. Btw I got surgery because of my metabolism and hormones nothing to do with my diet or food addiction.

I have struggled my whole life but at 70 years old I decided to just do portion control which sounds a bit like your eating plan. I lost 51 pounds over about a year. When I stalled I would not change my eating but I would extend my weigh in times and then the lose would show up. You are doing phenomenal keep it up and be patient. Sending peace and love 💕

I'm 10yrs out from lap band surgery (I think you made a better choice). It is such a head game. Just be kind to yourself! Well done on setting up the really good habits from the start, you've done great x

I agree I wish I had had a bypass instead of a band I have had a lot of problems it was 8 years ago I had it and I did lose a lot of weight in the beginning but I am now finding it harder to lose much and it's frustrating but Trina you are doing so well keep it up changing your way of thinking about food is key x

I am 12 months post op and have def had several stalls. I find it really helpful to look back at photos of myself before surgery, as this shows me how far I’ve come. Keep doing what your doing and the weight will be coming off, best of luck! Xx

I use how I feel and how my clothes fit as a better indictor of how I'm doing. Weighing messes with my head. You are doing great! Be kind and gentle with yourself. Congratulations on your new home and your healthy journey.

Hi Trina! I was bypassed August 25th and have also lost 21kg so far. I keep stalling and I hate the stalls but then suddenly it drops again. I now don't weigh myself more than once a week. I also find it challenging to eat enough protein but this is a long term journey and we will learn as we go. Well done on your progress! Xxx

If I were you I wouldn't bother having a bit of chocolate....you have come so far without it, and I honestly believe that you would find it easier to continue as you are, rather than eat some and then find yourself craving more. Sugary stuff is so addictive...I stopped sugar and carbs myself for about 3 months and the weight came off very easily, but after going back to them it made it harder and slower.

The reason for this life change isn't to never enjoy life or food!! I am 4 months out and down 60 lbs. I had a piece of sugar free chocolate, half a slice of pizza, nachos. Make it healthier just don't give up all you love

Just remind yourself why you have chosen the bypass. You did it for long term health rather than results on the scales. It will come with time you are doing amazingly and you're so brave to make those decisions. 😊

Advice from veteran gastric bypass person…postpone the “crap” for as long as possible. It’s like an alcoholic taking the first bite. Many of us don’t dump, to use as a regulator. Wishing you lots of luck.

Hey sweetpea, if I could give you any advice it would be to keep a track of your measurements. It took me 4 years to lose 11 stone. I didn't have surgery I did it through a slimming group, having struggled with my weight all my life. I finally found the tools to control my eating and totally changed my relationship with food. It was not an easy journey - weight loss never is. It goes on a lot easier than it comes off 😁 I can't remember the number of times I stalled but my fellow travellers supported and encouraged me. It is easy to get fixated on the scales - but they are important. Not only as a motivator but as a tool to keep you on track. I found that the times when I wasn't losing weight I was actually losing inches. It's a great way to reinforce how well you are doing as your body changes shape and you see your bust, waist, hip and arm circumferences decreasing. One thing I know you aren't going to lose is heart. You have come so far and 4½lbs a week is a fantastic achievement. It's also safer if weight comes off slowly and steadily. I'm so glad you are managing to get out and about and I think you should treat yourself to some chocolate. It's not good to deny yourself wee treats as that way you will end up feeling deprived. Keep going Trina, we are all here for you and rooting for you xxx❤️

Well done Trina, your doing amazing . This is isnt easy , and I guess after the first massive weight losses it will level out to be more slower as its more healthy for you . Just staying away from. the scales even for a week will help . I have had spinal surgery this year and have lost the year pretty much , after surgery I was doing so well and since then I have had so many set backs and new starts and disappointments as a result I have become very up and down and emotional and too focused on myself and my health and pain levels . This week I fell over just before making another new start of weight loss / physio goals activity etc. You have to have the strength to pick yourself ups and have smaller goals than the people round you living a full life as one day you will be like them again !

Hi Trina, you are doing great. I have not had surgery, but have lost some weight since Feb 2020. Still classed as obese, & BMI is still over what is considered healthy. I feel what helps is concentrate on NSV’s (non-scale victories), which you touched on i.e. not getting as out of breath, able to exercise etc. I also find not getting on the scales excessively helps, because if I stay the same or don’t lose I can find it disheartening. Talk to your doctor before changing your process. Getting away from the scale makes it easier to get away from daily goals. Don't let it wreck you emotionally; write down the number and move on. Weight tends to change daily, especially for women. You are doing fantastic, and look beautiful. Take care

I appreciate that you're sharing your journey with us. I'm so out of shape. I need to get strong. I'm caring for my mother. She's needing more help than my current health can allow. I think weighing yourself less often is best. The most important thing is to keep up progress mental and physical. If you beat yourself up, you're not focused on why you made the change. It wasn't about #s on the scale. I'd like to see what you eat in the day.

Just a thought re fibre...as you have such a tiny stomach now it may be better to take soluble fibre, as insoluble fibre is more bulky (good for stools but may cause bloating). I suffer with IBS so I have to avoid insoluble for the above reasons (it causes an ibs flare which is exactly like you experienced, very painful and somewhat explosive lol). You're looking really well, so keep up the good work!!❤️

I had my surgery in 2005. I moved about 7 years ago and found a journal I started after my surgery. I had every weight from surgery til several months post. I was weighing myself every day and writing in my book. I must have been insane!! It’s crazy. Forget weighing energy day. Once a week is more than enough. Focus on how you feel. Not so much on how much you weigh. Watch the size of your clothes go down. How you look. Listen to compliments. From family friends and most of all your boyfriend. You look wonderful. But it’s all normal.

Speaking from experience. Those demons are around for a while, longer for some, but they can become occasional wee annoyances as you toss them aside right quickly once you accept yourself, no matter what. Honestly. You are a lovely person. I thought that long before you decided to take this weight loss journey. God bless you, my dear.

I think you have done really well, Trina-Louise, 45lbs is an amazing weight loss😊I have been a yoyo dieter for most of my life and I've found weighing myself to be a good and bad thing as if I've lost weight, I get so happy I celebrate with food and if I haven't lost weight I commiserate with food!! I've found that measuring my body - waist, bust, hips, arms, legs - and noting that down is a good way to see if I'm getting smaller. Also, my clothes feeling looser/fitting into clothes that didn't fit before, is a great feeling and proof that I'm losing weight even if the number on the scale doesn't reflect this fact🙂 I also have to remind myself that it's a lifelong journey and my aim is to be healthy. I trip up, often, but I still keep going🙏🏾

Ty for your honesty on everything! I can totally relate to the weight loss stalls. I try not to weigh myself except when I'm at the Dr but once in awhile curiosity gets me. It sounds like you're doing great!!! Love your goals!!

Dear Trina Louise, for help with constipation please ask your health care provider if you can take lactulose (I hope I’ve spelled that correctly) it makes poos slippy. I’ve struggled and lactulose is very effective. x

i've learned my taste buds changed a bit after surgery. You have a good concept with protein first will work for you because it will keep you fullest longest. Any meat will be great, be careful with steak at this time, maybe still stick with the soft meat. all green veggies are low carb. All berry fruit is low carb. I love cheese. It will be interesting to see how you settle into what meals work for you.

Don’t forget that now you are starting to exercise again that can initially stall weight loss or cause small weight gain. I haven’t had any surgery but have done Slimming World in the past. I had a good weekly weight loss until I joined a gym and gained weight one week and had slowed weight loss after that. I was initially really disheartened until it was all explained to me properly and I could also feel the difference in the fitting of my clothes so realised that change was happening in more ways than just weight. Also you have made a huge life changing decision and it is a marathon not a sprint. As you said in your video, you are still learning what works best for you as your new normal so please try not to feel disheartened as you are doing amazingly. Have you tried Fybogel before? It’s meant to make stool softer so it helps everything keep moving through your digestive system and stop constipation. You can usually get it prescribed by your doctor as it is for a recognised medical reason.

Hi lovely ☺️ Firstly can I say, your looking so well, fresh and full of smiles. I haven’t had surgery yet, but I’m definitely leaning toward it. I’ve always said I’m allergic to scales, as usually when I see the numbers I’m so down hearted even though I’ve tried so hard. I do believe that the scales mess with your brain and any positivity slides away, I think your right, focus on how you feel inside, changes in how your clothes fit , the glow of your skin all the good things that are now happening to you. I really admire you sharing your journey and would love to hear more. Take care lots of love 💕

Hi lovely. Yesterday I told my doctor I wanted WLS so I’m on the very first rung of the ladder. My advise to you is not to use your scale and make a fortnightly appointment with your nurse, they will weigh you and also you can talk through any concerns. Just an idea. You are doing so so well. 7 months post gastric bypass. I think the best advice is not to let the scales be your measure of success. I’ve not lost anything for 4 weeks but have gone down a dress size in that time. So although the scales are disappointing and mentally it’s something difficult to deal with, a dress size is a lot of body change. Have to learn to ignore the voices that say your not successful just bcz the scales don’t show a massive change. And it’s a challenge everyday bcz I’m still locked to the scales and weigh everyday which isn’t particularly healthy. But measure your success by other things if you can x

My dear girl, you are really doing well. Please font beat yourself up. You are looking great. Just keep doing the best you can. I think you are correct, when one has lived with bring over weight for a long time, it's hard to get your brain around this weight business. I have a love hate relationship with my scale. At the moment I really don't like it. I have been doing so well and then oops and the kilos start creeping up. All the best and thank you for sharing your journey with us. You are really lovely 😍

Here's how I do some basics for myself and my partner. I make pretty much the meals I did before, just served/portioned differently. If its a pasta or rice based meal (eg, cabonara, chillli) I no longer mix the meat base/ sauce into the carbs. I serve the carb portion then add the meat. . Basically my portion is protein heavy, partners portion turns out like a regular old version. I make things like shepherds or fish pie, but put a much thinner layer of potatoe on about a third of the dish for my servings. Doing skewer based meats works well(loving satay chicken skewers with homemade egg fried rice)as easy to portion. I have found I'm over feeding my partner, as he often ends up with his usual portion plus part of mine, especially with things like steak, gammon, chops or baked potatoes. At one point my treat was half a cupcake, guess who ate the other half , plus their cupcake? 😂😂

Loving your journey so embrace it & enjoy where it’s taking you .. as for the scales , my advice would be ‘ throw them away ‘ . I too was obsessed. So what I do now, once a month I go to Boots and weigh myself there.. sometimes I even forget to do it , that’s how much it has helped me by not putting that pressure on my self .. I always keep the printed tickets which helps me be accountable for myself.. Remember…. Rome wasn’t built in a day !

Yep I have had my surgery two years ago, and have had many stalls and always found them hard. Lost 11 stone altogether, have stopped losing now tho for the last few months, although would love to lose a couple more stone

So proud of you of what you have achieved, well done for going swimming too. I know how you feel about getting disappointed by the scale reading, I usually take measurements because sometimes they can show loss where the scales might not. Don't know if that helps. Keep going, you are doing good ❤

I stalled… I didn’t really loose anymore weight after 6-12 months of surgery, purely due to bad food choices and medication I had taken at that time. I’m going to be having revision surgery over the next couple of months 🤞🏼

Averaging 1lb a week weightloss is pretty good going. Deffo don't weigh yourself all the time, once a week is fine. Keep going, you've only just started, it's a marathon not a sprint 💖💖

After I had the gastric bypass in June I get full I sneeze… I snotty sneeze it’s nasty… lol… you shouldn’t beat yourself up… a lot of people are attached to the scales… however some people have to get help to learn to deal with it. You shouldn’t weigh everyday your weight changes throughout the day from morning to night your absolutely beautiful and your weight changes daily depending on water retention as well

How often do you weigh yourself? Don’t do weekly it can be defeating. No to every day. Once a month is a better plan plus maybe you are espying miracles it is so much better to lose slower. About 2 pounds a month is recommended on any diet

wow ok 3 stone in 8 weeks is epic! that's about what I want to loose but not very focused right now. I am not on a diet or bypass or anything, just trying to eat 'normal' and track what I eat. I only weigh once a month and I lost 1lb this month which I consider a win if I don't go back up when I haven't even been trying!

I think you’re doing amazingly Trina. I agree, just weigh yourself once a month or if that seems too drastic for you try for once a week then build up to only once a month. If you’re nervous about eating chocolate maybe see how long you can go without it if you’re not craving it. I used to have chocolate nearly every day and would always make sure there was some in the house but one day I just stopped buying it and now I have some every now and then and I still love it but if I don’t have it at home I can’t eat it. See the doctor when I went to the hospital told me that I needed to lose the weight and since they gave me one year and then I didn't lose the weight and I put them away now they will not have me the surgery in both of my knees to say I need now they're going to give me the bypass but I wanted to tell you that I learned so much from your videos

It’s hard to put into words what I’m meaning but these are the issues with weight, it goes so much deeper than just food. One begins to be preoccupied with one thing and then swap it for another. Issues with food are difficult because we can’t avoid food, like say alcohol or drugs. Don’t be too hard on yourself, you are going through a huge life change, mentally and physically. Maybe it might help to speak with someone

Although I'm now 8 years post op I only ever weighed once a month from day 1 I also measured at the same time as I found on months I hadn't lost so much I had lost a lot of inches , the stalls really aren't a huge deal also the constipation will affect the loss/ gain so maybe just consider weighing less often but you have done amazing so far and are looking really healthy

I am coming up on 3yrs post op and at 10 weeks was exactly where you were with scales at the time I did ‘no weigh may’ because I also got addicted to the scales at one point multiple times a day after I’d been to the loo, etc it does eventually get easier but I do weight daily now still to hold myself accountable - feel free to dm if you want to chat with someone who’s been through the process!

If I recall correctly, you said that you aren't confident about taking your measurements. But, that would be my suggestion. Even if it's just your waist, start taking measurements. When we stop losing weight, we're often losing inches. Also, when you start working out, you are going to build muscle. You may actually gain a little bit of weight - but you're going to lose inches. Muscle burns fat. :)

I've lost 8 stone and I don't see it and I still wear clothes I wore before the loss and I won't get rid of the clothes because I think I'll put it on again, but listening to you I've put clothes in to a bag for the charity shop

I hope you're taking your measurements because a lot of times it doesn't show on the scale but it shows on the measuring tape how much you've lost and that helps you feel better and I know these things because I've lost 110 lb us Trina's have to stick together LOL good luck on your journey

Every program is different but.. My program's nutritionist suggested not having carbs (unless it's leafy greens) until you're maintaining after losing weight. The beginning part is a very important part of the journey. It gets slower later on. Also they recommended going to group therapy for weight loss surgery if available. I haven't had the surgery yet but I finished the program.

I had barriatric surgery. My attitude to eating out is to just order the meal that I want, eat what I can and just leave the rest.

Heyy give it time- your body just loses weight and stores fat then you’ll lose it again. Everyone’s body works differently! I’m having a sleeve next month I broke my back a few years ago and I can’t lose the weight that’s putting more pressure on my back so mines more for my back than my actual body image. I find Pinterest useful for diet tips.

Go watch A Girl and Her Phone on KZbin. She had bypass a couple weeks after you. She shares things that may help you in you journey. Note, she is also stalled in her weight loss. Also water exercise is her go to. She is in the US. Good luck.

I want to tell you that you're very pretty and that I'm so glad you did that for you because I'm about to have the same surgery that you have and the reason why is because I weighed 200 247 lb but also because I have authorized in both of my knees and 54 years old

For the constipation, lessen the fiber and increase the fat. Or you can use water and salt.

A friend who had the surgery said the gas got so much better when she stopped using straws to drink her water.

You are doing great. I think you should do measurements instead of weighing yourself. The scale is just one metric not the only one.

If you can let go of dairy slowly you’ll find the scale moves down naturally. It’s so high in fat that your eating way more than you actually eat/drink. It’s not a gimmick it’s the truth. You will lose weight.

I find these videos interesting. I'm very fat, have done loads of diets, and just before the first lockdown i started on a weight management course that could have led to bariatric surgery. It was NHS so there is a long process, with a psychological support aspect before the weight management and even more before bariatric surgery was possible. I chose not to go down that route after looking into the risks and advantages. After the initial psychological assessment and discussion with the psych, it occurred to me that what I needed was support with the messed-up thoughts I have about food and my body, but since I take a long time to trust medical professionals, I didn't express those thoughts or that need. I did the 'weight management course' but it triggered my anxiety and restriction/binging cycle when i was asked to weigh myself (every week) and to photograph my meals to send to the course leader every day. It felt far too much like the Slimming World and Weight Watchers group shaming meetings I went to for years. I ended up leaving the group after 18 months because of the damage to my mental health. I hadn't lost any weight, my weight fluctuated up and down, but after all that work nothing had changed in my weight and size. I was fitter though. because being on the course entitled me to 24 vouchers for the local leisure centre, which I used to go swimming when I could. Then I got a discounted leisure membership, so I joined the adapted gym there as well as swimming. My fitness improved massively, until I got an infection that buggered up my already messed up lungs, so now I'm back at the beginning with my fitness. It's just a consequence of my disabilities, although I'm upset about it. I understand the impulse to do something drastic like surgery when it feels like the world doesn't want you, or that your body makes life harder, and I understand why you took the surgery route. I hope it works out for you, and that the wind gets better. On the other hand, there's no way I'm going through weeks of eating hell and surgery, wind, diarrhoea and constipation, to not be able to eat a curry, rice and naan bread. I like cooking far too much!

Why going back to chocolate at all if you know you're addicted to it? I would stay away from sweets and processed food. That's the food that got you there.... Good luck!!

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but once you loose the weight, you will still need to keep away from the corn, butter, chocolate, and all the other bad foods that made you gain weight in the first place, unless you want it back on. Eat fermented foods, greens, lean meats, beans, complex carbs in normal portions.
