I'm from Slovakia and i believe Baba Jaga comes from Polish area mainly, but the etymology literally is from the word Baba or Russian бабушка meaning grandmother. In the stories she is a witch living deep in forest in an hut that stands on chicken legs , she flies around in a mortar and hold a large pestle and she is not just pure evil , she might help or hinder the ones that come across her in the forest. In my country we call her Ježibaba. She is our Forest Mother.
@user-yh2du7kk2z2 жыл бұрын
In a little phone game that I play, that’s how it depicts her. A witch with a house that looks like a chicken. In the game they spelled it Baba Yaga. But sometimes they change the name of things a little bit.

@mikolajmarcinkowski54872 жыл бұрын
I had no idea that Baba Jaga was a Polish thing or stemmed from Polish folk lore but it kinda makes sense... "Baba" is commonly used slang when referring to an older woman in a negative way, sort of like calling someone a "Hag" in english and I was always under the impression that "Jaga" (pronounced Yaga) was the short hand for her name ( "Jagoda" ). It is an extremely popular name for women around my great grandparents age and it seems generic enough that every family has a Jagoda somewhere on the family tree. (where I'm from anyways) So my granny telling me that old hag Jaga is coming to eat me if I misbehave felt like a genuine threat that made my great aunt very frightening to the 5yo me!
@youtubemec2 жыл бұрын
"Baba" means a grand mother, it can also be used as a synonym for old woman. We also have Baba Yaga / Баба Яга in Bulgarian fairy tales. And no, she is not originating from Poland. Baba Yaga is a mythical figure from the Slavonic folklore (long ago before modern countries exist, when Slavs used to speak the same language), that's why she is present in so many countries in eastern Europe.

Never ever heard of Gieves & Hawkes, thanks for giving details on their background and Baba Yaga is universal for all the Slavic folklore, I think, she is not a modern horror monster indeed. Usually she prays on lost wanderers in woods, often children, and feeds on them. She also has lesser magic powers, can often conjure diseases or curse a cow to stop giving milk. Surely not a boogeyman in it's severity/degree of harm that can be done. She's more spooky than gruesome horror. 7:33 - yay whole can of cork paste ! Also thanks for identifying the ranger as the ranger. One of my favourite machines of yours. It's just so satisfying to see it scrape that excess sole so regularly and in one piece (the other one is that wheel which grinds the incision in new soles for where the stitching will go, 14:17 there it is
