Good to see my old school KGV & EBS ( boarded there for 3 years in the 80's), I remember those offices in Bairiki because I used to hire VHS videos there from a Video shop on the ground floor. I have sat in the stadium many a times and am sad to see it gone.

Oh wow. I was at EBS 1980-82. You must be there in the late 80’s. Not only Independence celebrations held at the old stadium but inter-school sports, etc. Good memories!

Kona Mauri...So what happened to the Bank of Kiribati which was run in association with Westpac? Also TSKL (Telecom Services Kiribati limited)? Bairiki has changed since I was last there in 2000, wonder if the Bairiki Club is still going? The islet you mention was Bikeman Island, off where the Betio-Bairiki causeway is today. Hope you do a tour of Betio, it was over crowded and dirty, probably worse now? My friend Hang Kum-Kee ran the Paradise Club on Betio and George, Hang's brother had the Betio Hotel. Best part of Tarawa is North Tarawa, old style village life! Koraba
@temwaiku5 ай бұрын
Mauri naba. It’s still the same bank but the name is changed to ANZ. TSKL is now Vodafone and I believe there is another provider called Oceanlink. Lately, starlink is now available and proved to be the best for internet connection. Bairiki Club has long gone since early 90s or before (not quite sure, a long time ago). It’s now an empty space with market stalls. Correct, I meant Bikemaan which is now a sandbank or just a beach with no green life. The Paradise building is there but I think it’s used for other purposes. Not sure if the old Betio Motel is still operating but the same family have opened another motel towards Temakin which I think is called Betio Motel too. North Tarawa is doing a good job keeping the South Tarawa .. away by not building a causeway to link Buota and Abatao and the rest so it maintains its rural lifestyle. I did a little bit of Betio on one of my latest video. Thank you for your interest and suggestion, I will try and make more indepth videos of Betio and others next time I’m there. Tekeraoi

Is there any residential zone in Tarawa? You know, for famous people like kiribatian politicians or people from tv or entertainment industry? Good video, greetings from 🇲🇽
@temwaiku10 ай бұрын
Hello. The government provides houses for its senior politicians located near the embassies otherwise everyone lives like any other normal civilians around the island. Kiribati people lives a humble life and usually in an extended family providing for each other. There is no special treatment unless it’s to do with work. No status system! Kind regards

I read a book from 2003 that said you can't get coffee there. It looks like there are lots of stores in town. Can you buy coffee there now?
@temwaiku2 ай бұрын
@@cosmic-fortytwo Hello That was true. Just recently a travel agency office has a coffee shop in their office which is the only one in the island. It’s mostly the expats who go there for coffee. Cheers

A very nice and interesting video, thank you very much!! Unfortunately, I will never be able to travel to Kiribati, although it is my dream to get there one day. Such pictures are a nice insight into a dreamlike place that you would like to see:)

Thank you for a lovely comment. There is no direct flight to Kiribati making it expensive to visit. The foreigners are mainly expats working there but we do get the occasional travellers. Currently introducing cruise ships visit means there is hope for tourism! Cheers

@@temwaiku Thank you very much for this lovely answer:) I wouldn't be surprised if more tourists would come to this wonderful place - it's a dream come true to travel and admire Kiribati with its many facets. Of course, as in every place, there are also its problems - these can also arise from tourism. But it would also open up a lot of opportunities for people. and with as much joie de vivre as with you, this will certainly work, I'm absolutely sure:-) Greetings from Switzerland!!

I’m wondering if you get much World War 2 tourism? Do you have battlefield oriented tours and museums?
@temwaikuАй бұрын
@@chrismcgady4978 Hello. We don’t get much tourism as we are out of the way and the fares are very expensive. There is a guided tour of some of the World War 2 relics around South Tarawa. There is also a museum which I am sure holds some relics of the war. Cheers

Greetings. Only in small parts where it populated otherwise almost all people are still swimming and still eating fish from the lagoon. Kiribati is one of the few countries not exposed to contamination from factories and insecticides/pesticides from farms as we don’t have any! Also, the air is pure!

I hope the huge countries like USA, China, Indonesia, India, Brazil, Russia, France, etc are giving their social responsibilities to the small countries in oceania so that the small countries will stay forever. The big countries can build or develop the bridge, the causeways, building, etc
