People did test it and now we know according to Dan Watson who did a great test and R1 has two ISO levels one at 800 and the second one at 12800 while the R5mk2 has the first one at 800 and the second one at 4000 iso... no triple ISO

I only wish it oversampled 4k from 8k at 60 fps the R5 C does it and so does the Z8. If it can shoot 8K 60p that should be in there IMO.

It’s a weird one because we all know the camera is perfectly capable of doing it. I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets rolled out in a firmware update at some point (although still, I’m not sure why it’s not there in the first place)

I currently use the R5C for commercials and corporate videos, it is a beast of a camera but I would like to have a second body for the improved version 2 CLOG2 Full HDMI and so on. Canon should not miss this opportunity and launch it very soon, hopefully in less than 90 days. R5CII 5k$?

It’s toughie… I’m right now analyzing footage shot with my Reds and also with my Sony A9III to understand just how different these cameras are… so far, honestly… well the test are still ongoing, but the Sony despite the rumors of poor dynamic range, just might have an edge when pushing and pulling in post. I preordered the Canon R1… I need to shoot with it to understand its capabilities in the context of how it stands up to my other cameras. Triple base ISO would be amazing. It would likely make it a keeper. But I’ve yet to see convincing footage from the R1… or the R5Mk2 for that matter. Rumors is the Sony A7S4 will have the highest dynamic range of any Sony to date… I’m in a precarious spot. I own a lot of Sony glass… But I also own a lot of Canon glass. Outside of my Reds, I don’t really have any bodies to utilize them with. If the R1 disappoints, maybe I’m done with Canon. In the meantime, I’m evaluating whether or not I should stick with my Reds. They produce a lovely image… And I love the traffic lights for exposure. But I can’t deny I’m concerned about the future of Red. Have you shot with the A9III yet? If you haven’t, you really should. It’s the sleeper of the year.

My experience with all Sonys vs Canons I've owned has been that. The Sony codecs at each tier are just more robust. R3, C200, and C70 are closest, but A1 and A7S3 are still more pushable in post.

I’ve owned the R3 since launch. When I purchased the A9III I performed an exhaustive battery of test side by side with the Canon Eos R3. There was a lot of misinformation spread about the Sony. I bought it to confirm my bias for Canon… to prove my R3 was superior… I sold the R3 after wrapping up the testing. The A9III is the most advanced mirrorless currently available. I believe it has Sonys best sensor to date. You should shoot with… give it an honest try. Compare it head to head as I did against both Canon and Red. I think you’ll be surprised.

IMO, there's not much chance of something that big being nonchalantly dropped post-launch by some random UK Canon sales rep instead of being shouted from the rooftops on launch day by Canon themselves. For that reason, I doubt its true.

In stills mode, the R5 I has best DR at 100 and then at 400 ISO, this is well documented - this translates directly to 800 and 3200 in clog3, later marketed as 'dual ISO' with the R5 c, but the R5 should have this, too. I don't think they changed that with the R5 II?

@tom_K_d its more than just marketing though. R5C has options to be in either base and then push/pull highlight/shadow latitude off of that, or have the camera evaluate the scene and choose the base for you. OG R5 might clean up at some ISO value, but it doesn't quite behave like that.

@@loudandclearmedia Thanks for the insights, interesting - I just own the standard R5. Sensor characteristics should be the same, though. LEt's see what they come up with at the new R5II. A third base ISO (even if 'unofficial') would be nice for stills, too.

It’s been done with some older models of the EF-M line. They unlock the full potential of the cameras via a software jailbreak called Magic Lantern through an SD Card, unfortunately for what I’ve gathered it’s really complicated so it was only achieved in certain old models. They say it takes years to achieve. Sucks tbh

I would really like to know the answer to that questions, there was much certainty but likely 800/4000 on R5ii/clog2. I honestly think that my whole basis of buying this camera would be based on the noise, base ISO's and Dynamic range. Why can't they put a Circuit on all the ISO :). We have yet to see a proper CineD or Gerald undone sensor test, therefore I can't in good conscience pre-order this camera as it needs to be at least better then the R5C, and to that point, better then the fX3 to be considered. I honestly don't care about RAW video at this point. I just care about CLOG2. But if the c70 is any indication .....this camera should and has to be able to outdo the C70 too. Which means that this Camera could indeed get a "Stops SNR=2" score of 13.5 which would mean that its in the ARRI Alexa Mini LF territory, which means, I would need to buy it :), and on another note, Sony Made the ZV-E1 and ZV-e10ii too good and too cheap although with some serious overheating caveats. update, I just watched a KZbin video, its definitely only 800/4000, no third base, the footage got quite noisy around 12800, and definitely not useable at 25600. Likely much less noisy in CLOG3

@@carlosq00 It's the "Cripple Hammer" of information dropping. Talk about bury the lead. Shooting at 3200 on the R5c was pure beauty. Triple ISO on the C400 was the take my money moment. Geez.

The R1 can be seen like a mini C400 with stable 6K-RAW 60fps, but the R5MKII with 8K-RAW 60fps only filming 18 min without overheating is nowhere close to the C400 or the R1 for video (in a usable RAW format). Everyone who says "who needs 8K-RAW 60fps", will be more than happy with 6K-RAW-LT 60fps. So in my eyes, an R1 makes more sense for videos than the R5MKII, and the R1 is also much better in low light than the R5 MKII, beside that it is also much better in rolling shutter than the R5MKII. So I thought about switching from my preordered R5MKII to the R1, but the pricing in Switzerland is strange, while the R5MKII cost 4199.- swiss Frank, the R1 cost 6599.- what makes no sense when I compare it with US $ prices where the bodies are 4299.-$ and 6299.-$.

How would one be able to test this?

You measure the noise floor under the same conditions across the ISO range by signal analysis (such as a Fourier analysis). As you move up from a base ISO the signal gain will increase the noise until you hit the next base ISO. At each base ISO you'll get a cleaner noise level than the gain lifted ISO before it.

Film with closed camera cap on, boost 3-5 stops in post, just compare by eye what you get from the different ISO settings. This is a qualitative test, not a quantitative,, but it should be good enough to identify dual or triple base ISO.

If it were "triple base ISO", then that would be the buzzword of these cameras. It's not. More likely AI noise reduction processing set to engage at predetermined levels of unacceptable noise. Just as bringing in your footage into you NLE of choice and applying NR would effective provide per ISO setting level of "Base ISO"

It wouldn’t be ai based, because it doesn’t auto process areas of noise, it does it on the circuit when a certain iso level is reached. This is the same as what the a7siii started when 12800 all the sudden became cleaner. Again, was not touted as dual base iso but behaved like it.. but the schematics only show one gain circuit. True dual native iso is usually 2 circuits, one switches on when a certain iso is reached. Therefore it wouldn’t be utilizing the ai chip because it’s the same pattern they even had in the r5.. m.
