Hello mr gary. I'm a high school triple jumper and I am struggling with my arm action. My arm action is what is holding me back from getting a very big jump this season. I have just gone out to 45 ft and could really use some advice as to how I should approach using a new technique. I've been trying every technique that my coaches have been telling me, but they do not work and it stresses me out.I am a right-right-left triple jumper.

For men I advocate the double-arm technique. For women, I advocate the single-arm - unless they are strong enough physically and have the desire to use the double-arm technique. However, I would leave the double-arm technique to elite women only. This of course only pertains to the actual jumping movements - I do NOT advocate a double-arm technique from the board. I know some use it, but I still don't like it. The reasons are beyond the scope of this post.

Me to bring my arms back on the runway and throw them up my my chest., as you demonstrated in 1:22. They claim this is the most effective, yet it doesn't help me at all! Can you recommend a method I try using that is more natural for the body to carry out?

Thanks for the information. Which arm technique do you advocate, single or double?

I think it is a mistake to bring both arms back on the runway. I know a couple of high-level jumpers do so, but it is still wrong. Jon Edwards didn't do it...and his record hasn't been approached in almost 18 years. In order to comment on your technique I need to know more information and see some video. Email me and send a link to view footage your jumps. It is best if filmed from the side.
