Great video! Make total sense in most markets. I live in a northern region of the US with temps that dip into the 0 to 20 below range. One of the areas that triple-pane greatly out-performs double-pane is in the resistance to condensation. With the same environmental conditions in a home, triple-pane will do a much better job keeping the condensation off and has a higher interior glass temperature. Again, that can be a big benefit depending on the climate.

Let's not forget that the triple glazing reduces the outside noise dramatically, as well as the chance of vast condensation on the interior surface of the glass.

Great info on your vid! I'm getting ready to replace all of the windows in my Northern Mo ranch home. My house faces North, so I get overheated by the two windows facing east from my living room and bedroom, and the two facing west off my attached garage. So I think I will spend the extra bucks for these four windows to be triple pane. The North and South windows never see direct sun, except for the South ones in the Winter when I want the sun. Going triple pane on those four windows will save me the huge expense of buying aluminum awnings which can be over $2,000.00 each and block ones view. Also, I burn wood in the Winter for heat, so I am not really concerned with any heat loss I may have, as I oftentimes have to open a window anyway as it gets too hot at times. Do these energy tests apply in reverse if you live in a cold place where it’s all about keeping heat in? Also if you have it so the coating is keeping heat in rather than put does that mean you don’t see a darkening from the inside?

Triple glaze is by far a better choice than double glaze. For $100+ per window you make it back on thermals over 10-20 years.

I enjoy your videos Window Dog. Triple windows should last longer, more resistant glazing (assuming non-metal spacers), better properties (conduction and convection, as cited) and even security (i.e.breakage). The biggest thing to me though is Sound Mitigation and this seems entirely lost in the window industry. People who live near highways/high traffic sounds have more health issues - even people who say the noise doesn't bother them. All I do is Triple with Krypton Gas, Offset Technology and Insulated Frames. People are stunned at the sound difference. And our product sells at a lower price than 80% of the run-of-the-mill LowE Argon doubles. I'm in Canada but I'd like to put links to your videos on our website and hope you dig into some of these other elements in future. P.S. We have a QUAD Window too. Thanks. Jim

We have excellent Double Panes and Triple Panes Insulation Glass Units for our windows. Also, All of them are Fully Tempered Glass. With Low-E Coating and Argon Gas Filled. Around 50-100usd per sqm.

Hi just saw you video I am currently working on a timber frame home in Montana front side will have a vast amount of glass so I am going with triple pane glass. What I can't seem to get much info is just the insert portion of the glass, which is what I am interested in as well as the shape I can custom order, looking for triangle shape inserts as well as trapazoi shape on lower sections. Re the cost of double vs triple; one might consider triple on the side of the home that gets the most cold in winter, like the north side or any side where the wind blows the hardest winter air. A side that faces the most noise is a consideration too. So, two pane where it's not critical and 3 where it is.

I would rather let the heat energy in the home in the winter time. All that infrared coming in would be better than reflecting it back out. I would want the windows without the coating is that possible? If I want sunlight in the summer I just go outside so I'd just block it with blinds then.

Dennis Daley we get hot weather 10 days in the year, and cold weather 355 days in the year. I rather have the heat come in. We obviously don’t have an air con as a result. And in those ten days we open the windows and close the blinds and curtains. And mostly we don’t care as we are outside enjoying our ten days of our annual ten days of hot sun shine.

+Arlene hartwell you just need to look at the type of low-e coating on the glass. We offer windows in Florida with great coatings that stop the heat. Doesn't matter if it's a sunroom or any other room there are always great solutions.

Please look at the "U" value of the window. It's the insulation value & it will make a big difference in heat transfer (not direct sunlight). The low-e coating is for glass in direct sun - If you have a designed overhang to keep the windows in shadow (critical for southern states) the low-e coating will make little to no difference.

Before you make a decision on double vs triple glaze windows, you should consider what your insulation value is in you walls and ceiling. If your “R value” is poor, spending big money on triple glaze windows would something you may want to reconsider.

I just bought windows that had a free upgrade to triple pane windows. I noticed athe tint on the slider part of the window ehich i was told the window would have. But on the stationary side of the window it doesn't seem to tinted at all? Is that normal? I would like some input before talking to the business. Asap please.

from single pane to double pane windows makes all the difference.you will notice considerable difference from the get go.i understand that they don't make single pane windows anymore or I should say they are very hard to find.do you homework before buying anything.installation is key as well.very top quality windows can have poor installation and vise versa.

I NEED HELP! I know this is a fairly old vid so I might not get my answer, but i am puzzled.. Doesn't heat seek cold? Cold does not seek heat. Conditioned spaces in cold climates suffer from heat loss.. It's the heat exiting the building through the panes, the walls, cracks etc. Here is an experiment to try and a good way to really understand... If you have, say, a piece of foil backed insulation board. Even a 4 x 4 piece - on a cold, cold winters night walk up to your largest window ( a picture window is best) and quickly hold the insulation board against the window... you'll imediatly break the exiting stream of heat and feel it bounce back in your face. When you open a door on a frigid day; it's the heat rushing out allowing the cold to infiltrate.. MY QUESTION is why do we, this video, concentrate so much time on exterior heat gain rather than interior heat loss? Did I misunderstand something? Was it a vid for 1, 2, and 3 zone heating areas? I want my window to stop 90/97% heat loss here in the Adirondacks. In the end maybe I missed something. Do they work in reverse during the heating months? From my understanding of the low E coating the answer is no.. HELP!

There is an emphasis on keeping heat out versus keeping heat in because in most parts of the country (US) cooling a home uses significantly more energy than heating it. In most cases a dual pane is more than adequate in cooling dominated climates while triple pane has a big advantage over dual pane in keeping a house warm in winter. LowE coatings come in high solar heat gain, moderate solar heat gain, and low solar heat gain versions. A high solar heat gain coating is going to let in almost as much solar heat as will clear glass. The advantage of the coating is that it will keep the heat in once it's inside but clear glass will let the heat back out faster than it came in. Obviously you don't want to deal with that in summer, but it's great in winter.

whatever type of gas is inside the glass it will be lost over time there is no escaping it. The result is just a few lower numbers in its performance.

How about a video on the % of seal failures on windows using floated glass that typically uses aluminum spacers with a screw holding back the argon vs the stainless steel vacuum sealed glass that actually has a 20 yr 150% reimbursement from Cardinal to its purchaser. Lol...lifetime glass warranty is only because the window company is using it as a marketing ploy (actual glass manufacturers do not offer anything of the sort) just like vinyl window companies use triple as a bigger focus so it can differentiate away from weaker frames that fail in direct sunlight in 8-12 yrs.

Popa Mircea Just take a look at the ratings and you'll be able to tell. The U-Factor and the SHGC of the window will tell the whole story. You'll probably find it doesn't make much difference. You can find more info on the ratings here: thewindowdog.com/window-ratings-explained/

Many manufactures use the same glass manufactures & the same specs but the entire window assembly will be the difference between an A window and a pour investment. To get this, the manuf. will need the size and the type of operation (or fixed)

Now that people are building 2x6 houses with 2" or 4" of external insulation - why don't we make much thicker windows - I think the increased distance between the panes should increase the R value or decrease the U value. Or for that matter why not have 4 pane windows since even triple pane windows are about 1/4th or 1/5th the insulation value of the walls.

The optimum spacing between glass panes for energy performance is 7/16" to 9/16". Below or above that width range performance begins to decline.

You can always try to haggle with the manufacturer that quoted you for the 3 pane by saying that you want to go for the manufacturer that makes the 2 pane unless they bring down the cost of their 3 pane to meet the price of the 2 pane as much as possible.

Not a big fan of triple glaze. Adds a lot of extra weight to the sash, also adds strain to the sash support system. In many cases, argon gas becomes all gone gas after a few years. It leaks out. A window manufactured with a quality Double insulated glass unit is still the best bet. Believe me, not all insulated glass units are made the same. Some fail much faster than others, depending on the air space used and bonding agent involved.

All the issues you mention are serious concerns, however if you are purchasing the triple pane from a reputable manufacture, all those issues are covered under their warranty. Always check warranty's.

No this information did not help - the insulation in the walls of a Southern homes do not warrant the extra expense of triple pane windows. Perhaps if one lives in Minnesota, but triple pane windows in Georgia is a waste of money.

You are only taking into account UV / Radiant heat. You do not take into account convective energy that causes draft. Remember, it's only daylight / sunny 50% of the time and the sun only shines on a window an average of 50% of that time. So your radiant energy rant only affects the transmittance of energy 25% of the time. The other 75% of the time the triple pane window is far superior. Until you've owned a home with triple pane windows, you don't get it.
