With a small long-haul fleet and few, infrequently served destinations, AZAL can't expect to compete with Turkish, Emirates, Etihad or Qatar as a transfer airline. AZAL doesn't even fly to India, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, Hong Kong, the prime Asian markets. Oman Air, which is much larger than AZAL, is trying that in Muscat, but so far with only limited success. Ethiopian Airlines has been somewhat more successful, but it has to offer crash fares to compete with the Middle Eastern carriers.

AZAL pilots land sooo good! that is the one thing I noticed while flying with them and I noticed in your video as well. Most planes when they land they almost crash into the ground, with a loud thud and the whole plane jumps. Landing is alwayss delicate with AZAL. very good pilots, I think they are really good for people afraid of flying.

That airport got 5 starts from somecompany (i dont know which company) I am from Azerbaijan and live in İstanbul, turkey. Everytime I fly to Istanbul. I see that sign "5 Stars". That is absolutely good airport not a big airport because Azerbaijan local population is 10M but modern.

IFE wasnt broken it is just a bit difficult to find out how it works lol i live in uk but i am from Azerbaijan and in last 5 years flew about 6 times with Azal and everytime it takes me a bit of time to find out how to use it lol what about food always been amazing,big portion, tasty,and then they give u more after an hour or two lol never seen anything like that on any other airlines.

Heathrow Terminal 4 is cramped unfortunately because of the way it was built. It was designed and built in the 1980's for short-haul business flights. The idea was that the terminal was very long and narrow, so that you could be dropped off outside, check in, go through security, and board the aircraft all in the space of 30 minutes. The departure gates were made for smaller aircraft (like the 737 or BAe 146) and the whole thing was built on one storey. But as soon as it opened in 1986 British Airways demanded sole access to it (and more-or-less got it, due to silent payments being made to Thatcher's government). They immediately started operating short AND long-haul flights from it, basing 747s and even Concorde from there. T4 was never built to handle that sort of capacity. It was made for 100-pax aircraft. Now BA have T5 (mostly) and other airlines fill T4. They've widened the airside section a little, but it's still cramped. It's ridiculous really.

Excellent, a very refreshing trip report on an airline that many people don't fly. Yes T4 at LHR is terrible. I really enjoy the 788, its a great aircraft. The food looked great for economy, well presented and looked like something I would want to eat. Baku airport is amazing, but just like you, its creepy how there is really no one there. Did you stay long or just fly off somewhere else ? Great report again.
