On average carbon rings last a few thousand miles - I've used probably a dozen of them over the years on various bikes. That's definitely less mileage than traditional rings, but by no means delicate. A 1x setup also has the advantage that it's never undergoing a shifting mechanism, so that can help too.

@@Niewiem0 Well, different folks have different experiences I suppose. It all depends on your shifting setup, your shifting hygiene, your power output, the cleanliness of your chain and the road you ride, etc.

You can see that even on that smooth tar seal it's jittery and harsh. It's an interesting concept build but I don't believe it rides great, not even for a minute.

@@cahal that's not what I meant when I said that, but you're welcome to "translate" however you like :-) What I mean is that handling a 7lb bike feels very different from handling a heavier one, independent of other changes. The lower weight feels different. I've been fortunate to ride a wide variety of very high-end bikes and components in my time, and I can say that the bike rides beautifully.

The only perishable thing I think is on the bike is the chainring but maybe a bit of grip tape on the bars to be able to control the bike when sweating

Interesting- always good to see innovation. If you were to race this i think the actual lack of weight and the lack of electronic gearing is actually a hinderance in my experience. especially on hill climbs. when the bike is so light you feel the road more, couple that with slower speeds uphill and higher power its better to be in the 5.5-5.9kg mark ive found

Good eye! That road we were on was not great, and unfortunately I rode over some glass and suffered a flat, which you can see developing in some of the shots.

I can't find the jagwire XEX-SL shift housing for sale anymore, but it doesn't last as long as other shift cables, it was lighter though for sure.

@@philadams9254 that's because it was NOT rideable. I still have my original photos if anyone cares to see that build. But it was for show. Some folks liked to pretend that it was rideable, but important things like the freewheel didn't work whatsoever. Shifting and braking were not exactly "usable" either.

@@nick_salazar Yeah, it would be good to see anything you might have. Would it have held up for a short hill climb event where you could warm up on rollers (or a spare bike!), then walk back down the hill or descend slowly? That's the typical routine for a lot of the UK hill climb scene who can build ridiculously light bikes where things barely work!

@@philadams9254 no as mentioned it was NOT rideable. For example the rear freewheel didn't function. Shifting and braking weren't really workable. The crank was a one-off that would not have passed standards testing (i.e., it would likely break if ridden normally). It was not something you could really ride in any conditions. And even the frame was described as having a "max rider weight" of 140lbs.

I mean, a simple google search would tell you that the Supersix Evo wasn't around in 2009. Your Supersix Evo is the first gen, so it's a 2012-2015 bike with the curved fork. I have one sitting in front of me now.

Haha yep, you aren't the first. We were on a pretty brutal road with pretty thin tires and got a puncture in the middle of our shoot.

I would have to put on a different seat as I would sacrifice a few hundred grams to get comfortable ...since I weigh more than 200 lbs I would need a more sturdier wheel set and I would also have to go on a crash diet to get rid of my spare tyre,,.....I think this is a great build btw and I am talkin tongue in cheek

Props for the build but cheated with the cowhorn bars, unusable 1x gearing and friction shifter. When it comes to real world lightweight Ales Arnez 3945g build with 2x, full sti shift levers and road bars is the king.

I rode a 14lbs race bike, it was like having rockets on my feet...it was very cool....I was passing cars going up a hill.....flying up to train tracks was scary though!

Idk why road cyclists always lie about how uncomfortable they are on bikes like this. Wouldn’t want to ride it anywhere else but for a hill climb competition. And the gearing is too tall for that. So its useless for me.

Plenty of people are extremely happy with those saddles. There's really no reason why someone couldn't be comfortable on this. The gearing can also easily be changed.

The gearing can surely be changed but it would add weight to the cassette, derailleur, and chain - about half a pound - this would put the bike in about 500th place in the lightness war thus making this video completely useless. The seat is obviously completely uncomfortable. Its a tiny sheet of solid carbon fiber, essentially hard plastic with extremely small contact points. Stop lying. It does not make you look cool or appear to have super powers or super pain tolerance. Its actually a really, really a bad look for the bicycle industry. The perfectly horizontal tilt of the bars look amazing but it is completely impractical. Your weight would force your hands forward causing you to excerpt contestant, unnecessary energy just holding yourself up. And there’s no padding or any there either. Like I said, perfect for a 2 minute hill climb. That’s about it.

@@EricPeelMusic If you look at the pressure points of a saddle, they are quite a lot smaller than the saddle itself. But yeah obviously it has to fit perfectly to be comfortable. I have noticed on 200km rides that some minimal padding on your carbon saddle is also a good idea :D

I mean, any cyclist who really rides these saddles regularly is secretly wearing a $500 pair of padded shorts from Switzerland anyway. It’s kind of like saying because you’re holding your handlebars with more contact surface than the bike is, the handlebars are part of you, not the bike. So the weight of the handlebars does not count as the bike. Its just a stupid and expensive hobby, this weight weenie stuff. Don’t get me wrong I save weight where it makes sense to. If a component is more expensive because it uses longer lasting materials or tech that happens to be much lighter - I buy it right away. For example the Garburuk cassettes. All tool steel, milled with the exception of the T7075 granny cog - which is replaceable for a reasonable price. These cassettes can save 150g, it’s rotating mass, and lasts much longer than most other cassettes, and it’s 1/3 cheaper than Sram cassettes. Another one is the X01 chain vs GX. Its about double the cost of GX but lasts 5x longer and about 20g lighter. If the next chain were only 5g lighter than that, costed another 1/3 but lasted another twice as long, I’m buying it. But when stuff costs thousands and makes you hurt just, it just doesn’t make sense and it’s not cool or fun anymore. Its just a flex at this point.

I'd say your rear tyre has deflated a bit. That could've shaved off another 100 grams off the total count. If you did set it back to normal values, it would'v egotten around 3.8 kg ?!?! (Jk, it was a fake hate comment :D)

As soon as I saw the carbon chainring the "ridable" part of the equation got thrown out of the window. Those chainrings last nothing. You'll be replacing them every other ride...

​@@CiupremoYes. I have a 53/39 on my commuter bike that's done about 250 hours this year and was installed last summer. Still looks good. For a smaller climbing one, you might wear it out quicker

I mean it looks cool but would I want to own and maintain this? No. Carbon everything. It's got way too little flex. I'd rather have weight than something that will cost so much to replace to maintain that weight.

If you’re going to put a rim brake bike to save weight, you might as well not put any brakes at all lol. Can save even more weight that way, and you’re not losing any performance between having a rim brake or not having any brakes at all

Good rim brakes are not that bad. And that comes from somebody who adopted disc brakes on a road bike very early. They have their place, be it budget builds or superlight.

This is the dumbest bike ever. What is it even for? Weight doesn't matter for TT bikes and if it's meant for road why the TT bars? This is exactly the kind of unrideable bike you talk about at 0:20. I've also never seen somebody look more wobbly and uncomfortable on a bike than at 4:00
