They recorded the songs prior and had them playing in earwigs, but the microphones were live. The sound mixers undoubtedly used some of both, but it's not fair to say the singing in the movie is "live" and mean that what we're hearing is live. Yes, they sang live for the camera and the audiences in order to get the scenes to work while filming, but that's not the same as saying that what we're hearing was what was recorded live while they filmed.

The shots are almost exactly the same, the flashbacks in the middle of the song, down to even how both of their hair is styled. The vocals in both of those scenes are the best part of them all. It’s so crazy how much Gaga has in common with Whitney in this movie, down to the point where they both performed these songs in their first ever films.

I totally agree with your comment about “it sounds like she has an endless range”. I’ve always thought this. Obviously, she has limits and there are female vocalists who have hit much higher notes in their chest voice, but Gaga has never gone for a night in her upper register and not nailed it. She really strains her vocals and her technique is so good that she never shows signs of inability because she knows how to stay away from those notes that she know she can’t hit safely. There have been times where she hits such a big note and I thought “that’s the very top of her range, if she goes any higher, surely her voice will crack or give out” and then she goes for a higher note and nails it just as well. Gaga’s a revelation.

With that song, you can feel all the emotions, the passion, the love, the hurt, the pain, the anguish all at once, like there are only a few vocalists in this world that can move you, and touch you like that and the only vocalists who can do that so effortly are Lady Gaga, Mariah, Whitney, Aretha, Luther, George Michael, Michael Jackson to name a few. Many few vocalist and musicians can sing the one line..... and you're gone, you're done, like.. it's so beautiful in the ways in which they sing...they can shake you to the core, make you breakdown, and cry. I love this movie, I saw it with my mother and my aunt a few weeks ago, but watching this just...its so powerful, shes pouring her heart and soul into that performance, and I'm not that much of a fan of her music, but the music she sings in the film.... I'd like to see her do more of that kind of music. I love her artistry and how versatile she as a singer and I respect that about her.

I was so excited for this movie to come out so people could see her pure raw talent. She’s got it. Had it. And will continue to blow me away with every performance. I KISS THE GROUND SHE WALKS UPON.

Did not know how much technique was used in signing and you explained it so clearly. This song makes me cry every time. And I highly recommended that you see the movie if you haven’t already.
