That a man ever possessed this voice at the same time as having the amazing gift/chops on guitar remains one of the great genetic events of Canadian music history. Had Rik Emmett stuck it out with rock, he'd be a household name in the entire western hemisphere. But he followed his muse into jazz and classical, and that work was equally brilliant. Where are there any vocalists of equal range and expression in today's music? Not even close....

Currently a music prof at a University in Canada. Holds music classes to help teach not only guitar, but songwriting as well. Guy always had his head on straight and is still a humble guy. I beat you by a year and wouldn't change one single minute. I saw these guys live in '87. I was maybe 10 feet from Rik for the whole show. I remember two things prominently about that night: seeing this incredibly tall guitarist in a band called Black n Blue shred like there was no tomorrow and wondering why he wasn't in a bigger band (Tommy Thayer) and singing along with Rik Emmett when he pointed right at me and nodded. I was a kid who had a job that paid just enough to have a room in a house I shared with two buddies, the occasional house party, and every concert I wanted to see. I may have wasted a decade of my retirement on the front end, but I'll never regret it. Those were the days.

@jmaster38 @kenporich2006 My range is not anywhere near as high-pitched as it used to be, my friend. When I do 'Fight' now, I transpose the key down from Dm to Bm --- and I still have to struggle to hold some of those high notes! But whoever would have guessed, as a 30 year old, in 1983, that I'd still have to try and sing those Triumph songs as a 58 year old in 2011?!? - Rik

This song is in my DNA; it's how you know I'm a 70's boy from the Midwest. Styx, REO Speedwagon, Cheap Trick, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, Aerosmith's original on-drugs lineup; all before LA ever thought of Van Halen. We thought they were the pinnacle, but they were the beginning of the end, a path that ultimately led to...Winger. These guys are everything that was badass-one word, not two- about the 70s

75 actually. Was there ever another power trio with such talent and ability, harmonic vocals and melodies, and such powerful music with such a positive messages as them in the history of classic rock? Some would say Rush right away I;m sure, but although they had very comparable lead vocals, the harmonies Triumph possessed were not comparable, and Rush's message was as much more on the esoteric end of the spectrum just as much as their music was on the progressive end of the spectrum. Both were incredible power trios though for certain! The Police took it into a new fusion era whereas ZZ Top held onto more of the classic rock feel from the hard rock era of Jimi Hendrix and Cream with a bit more of the commercial side of the classic rock era, whereas those that followed after the Police brought it into more of a grunge approach like Nirvana and Green Day.

If you're listening to the big, multi-market stations (or even the multi-station corporations) you're doing it wrong. The best new stuff is generally not played on them until the very last. Of course, that has always been the case to some extent. Check out The Rockets - also from the 80s (kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6vEq5p9Yt5qq68). Big in Michigan but never got nationwide. Have friends in other countries suggest some music. Go down the rabbit hole of KZbin suggestions and eventually you'll find yourself with something fresh and energizing. Maybe Mongolian Folk Metal like The Hu (their languages word for Mongol), Bosa Nova like Nova (out of Brazil), or rock like Indigenous. It is out there.
