... here is super rare footage i took of Toronto Canada's own TRIUMPH - live @ South Padre Island Texas during SPRING BREAK 1988 ... The quality of recording is not HD because it was 1988 and was recorded using a two piece hand held Magnavox on a VHS tape lol ... Now while this show might not be the US FESTIVAL (although there was at least 30,000 there beach side) at least I captured this rare moment in time which was soon before the band broke up.

... hey Doug that's awesome, glad it made your day, and hopefully brought back some cool memories 👍 wish I had filmed the entire show straight through but I had two crappy batteries that would always run out of juice real fast so I would have to stop for a bit so the battery would fire back up quickly so I could get back to filming LOL * QUESTIONS 1. were you the promoter for Budweiser or did Budweiser hire you as talent buyer? 2. and did you also promote the Richard Marx concert? FYI i also videotaped that show and it's on KZbin if you haven't seen it already. 3. do you happen to have any pictures of that day, whether it be of the show or backstage Etc? 4. did you promote any other spring break concerts in Padre Island? ... thanks and glad you found this video 😎

I met Rik Emmitt in the early ‘90’s, Triumph had broke up but Rik was doing a guitar clinic. I was right in front of him when he played many requests for Triumph stuff. I asked him to play “Midsummer’s Daydream 21:30 … and he did, what a great guy and incredible musician, keeping the Canadian flag flying high. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🤟🤟🤟

Thanks a million for videotaping this awesome TRIUMPH concert. Rik EMMETT is one of the most talented musicians in rock music. This is GOLD for any Rik EMMETT and TRIUMPH fan. The band played a handful of concerts in 1988 in support of the under appreciated 9th studio and final album with Master Rik, 'Surveillance' (1987). BUDWEISER Beer sponsored TRIUMPH's 'The Sport Of Kings Tour' and this concert is likely a result of that sponsorship with BUD.

At the time of this concert I lived on S Padre Island in a beach house barely 300 yards from where the stage was built, near the Jetties. I also, at the time, was writing the Live Entertainment Column for the Port Isable/ S Padre Island Press. A couple hours before the show I got to interview Rick Emmett, capturing the interview on cassette tape, which I still have. It was an Awesome Day!!!

I used to live 30 mins from S Padre Island down 48 in Brownsville, TX in 94-96, as I started my NWS career there after college. I actually retire after a 30 year career and 5 NWS offices here in about 10 months. How time has flown, eh? Two adult kids, one entering his Jr year at A&M. Amazing and am blessed. I did see their Allied Forces and Thunder Seven Tours in the early-mid 80s while in HS with my older brother up here in Dallas. Man, the 80s and early 90s. Wish I could turn back time, man.

A good friend called me the day of the show saying he had an extra ticket and asked if I would Ilike to come, I had no pre conceived notions. I walked out thinking it was one of the best shows I had ever seen, they were absolutely great. The "new" Bad Company opened with their new singer on the "Fame And Fortune" tour, they were good too. It was also the last concert I saw before I got my first Walkman, sure wish I had captured both those bands for the archives.

Wow!! Incredibly rare footage. I have been a huge Rik Emmett fan since 1981, and this is almost hard for me to watch. I believe he had long since put Triumph in his rear view mirror when this was recorded. Also, Triumph was way too big of a band to be playing spring break anywhere. I know that Texas was always very good to Triumph, so I think they showed up, went through the motions, got paid, and headed back home. Rik is just too much of an excellent musician for this. Thanks for posting the video anyway.

First off glad you liked the video .. second WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT MAN ... Spring Break was HUGE back then whether in Texas of Florida or Mexico ... If Triumph was way to big for Spring Break then why did they come down to a small venue down in South Texas (where im from) at the height of the career ? ... and this Spring break gig was in 1988 at there down fall and the gig was way bigger, talking over 50,000 ... So whether they play in an arena that holds 30,000 or play beach side that has over 50,000 whats the difference?... i sure he was happy to see all those people ... now Remember Triumph could have easily have said NO to the gig but Budweiser pays big bucks and once again this was 1988 when things were falling apart ... And besides other big name acts were playing Spring Break ... So whats worse, that they played Spring Break or caved in the Corporate Sponsorship?? ... I think your OVER thinking Riks talent in saying that he is too good for Spring Break ... Its not rocket science and Im sure he never once thought that he was too good ... If he is a REAL rocking musician you go where the shows are, you play your ass off and keep going ... Also when you say he went through the motions and headed back home I think your in so many ways putting Rik down ... he came, he conquered, and no one complained

JOE C. Thank you for the response. You make valid points. I may be overthinking Rik's talents, but it is just my opinion. The 1988 tour concluded amid growing disharmony over writing credits and artistic direction. In late 1988, Rik Emmett made a total break with Triumph, a costly move resulting from a long-standing agreement that if any one of the trio left, they would leave with only one ninth interest. That statistic speaks volumes about his feelings about what was going on within the band. He subsequently began a modest but distinguished solo career, with his first album, Absolutely, yielding four hits in Canada. Meanwhile, Triumph released 1989s Classics as their obligatory fifth album owed to MCA Records. I very much appreciate you taking the time to respond to my comments. If it comes across that I am putting Rik Emmett down, that is DEFINITELY not my intention. I have been a very loyal fan since I was 9 years old. Again, thanks for your response. I respect your opinion very much. It would be awesome if Rik saw this and responded...BTW, do you have any other rare Triumph stuff? Ive got a series of pictures that were take at an Atlanta show in early 1985 from the first row. The pics are incredible and I would scan them to you if you are interested....

Thanks for sharing something I never expected to see. I was pretty close and shot a couple rolls of 110 film (remember film?). Worked at the Holiday Inn there from '80 to '01, and got backstage passes from the beer companies that sponsored the concerts, but all that got you was free beer, burgers and a bad view from the rear.

They were trying to recreate the same sound from the albums (it was the 80's) and even when they played Rocklahoma and Sweden Rock, they had Dave Dunlop from Rik's band helping out with guitar/keyboard and backing vocals

Growing up i thought i was "shittin' in high cotton" because the guitarist's name was Rik Emmett. I'm a guitarist, but mine is Ric Emmett. I couldn't even use my own birth name in my own band because i didn't want people to think i was "that guy." Ya know. Lol

I saw them in concert in Corpus Christi, Texas in the 80's. It was the Triumph and UFO Tour,at the Memorial Coliseum. (the same coliseum I saw Ozzy Osbourne and Randy Rhoads in concert a month before Randy died in a plane crash, R.I.P.) The Memorial Coliseum was later demolished. I remember the shirt sleeves that stopped at the forearms?) for $7.00. The concert tickets were about the same price. I remember saying to myself, "Damn, these shirts are expensive." 😂
