Triumph Tiger 1050 Sport Owner Review

Nice review! I have a 2011 1050se, was going to trade my old 2008 vstrom 1000 for a Tenere 1200, but saw a 1050 in the showroom and test road it as well, loved the looks and the performance. It was a definite upgrade from the vstrom and I bought it! Great bang for the buck, and comfort and performance at a good price, buy buy buy!

I am on my third 1050 (ok I crashed one and wrote it off) I cannot find ANY bike I would like to replace it with except perhaps for a 1050 sport. Just fantastic.

@@motomogul - Also I like how you explain the reality of the throttle on long trips. Another thing is reviewers being either too picky or having some sort of hidden agenda whereby they try to promote transport which is essentially rubbish (see Hubnut or I drive a classic car 'reviews'). Maybe in the future you could do some comparisons. I'm wondering about automatic / semi-automatic motorcycles - and if they are worth it. The adventure / multi-purpose motorbike market certainly is interesting at the moment....

I’m trying to organise a comparison but I am limited with the bikes that dealers have available for road test. I’ll always be totally honest on a review otherwise there’s there is no point in doing it. Although, I have to balance criticism as some people will love a bike or a brand come what may and I don’t want to offend anybody in the process.

@@motomogul - its horses for courses these days. Nobody really produces bad stuff. It's more down to taste, price and intended usage. There are mega-tourers, daily commuters and weekend leisure motorcyclists. I think for me, something that I can ride into town occasionally and zip around country lanes is good enough. If it can comfortably take in a long tour on occasion - super.

I've owned a 2018 Tiger Sport 1050 from new. I haven't found the need to replace it so far. Triumph's new Tiger range have 19 inch wheels which you don' really need if most of your riding is done on the road. I fixed the poor ergonomics with a replacement screen which stops the wind from hitting me full in the face. I have also replaced the standard battery & exhaust to reduce weight. Every year me & the wife take the bike from Portsmouth to Santander on the ferry. We've been all around Spain, Portugal & back across France. The upright riding position is comfortable when you're a bit older. If you take off all the paniers & engage "sports mode" this motorcycle transforms into a very fast sports bike.

I have a pearl white 2012 1050SE ABS. It has all the extras fitted and full Triumph luggage from new. Got it in 2016 with 3k on the clock, it now has 25k. it has toured Spain, Portugal & France two up with the breadknife for two week tours and up and down the mountains. Weekend blasts with some mates and road the 1000miler Iron butt on it, plus i train new riders as i'm an instructor. I have been riding for 40 years and i can say this bike does every well. Even now i hit the starter and a smile comes to my face. When it has to go which will be sad day the Sport will replace it.

Some people are scared to put miles on any bike...'it will reduce it value when I come to ride' said to me so many times. They are designed, made to be enjoyed. Yes a top top bike. I'm a mechanical engineer and I know a good engineering from bad. Yes all vehicles have there up and downs. The Tiger is a bit tall for me. (Short arse 5.7) but had custom seat made, sorted.

@@motomogul yes, but tuned a bit differently for a little less horsepower. And in the 6 years between the 2011 Speed Triple and the 2017 Tiger, there have been loads of little tweaks to the engine. Did a test ride on it last week: with the ride mode set to Sport, it leaves little to be desired. A little sad to see the Speed Triple go, but also really curious about the Tiger.

Traded a 1200RT for a 2019 Sport....Beamer just wouldn’t behave itself(BMW today ATM tomorrow)!!!... Did 4000kms+ touring Scotland last September on the Tiger, it laughed at the roads, chewed them up, best bike decision i’ve made so far...good luck with her, great bike☘️💚....oh, Puig touring screens a must!

Thanks for the upload, looking forwards to tomorrow's one, I'm still anxiously awaiting my Mod2 resit on 26/3 so I can get out on my own Tiger Sport. How do you find the Michelin tyres, I assumed they are Road 5's? I'm torn between those and the Pirrelli Angel GT 2's. When I bought the bike they supplied new Metezeler Sportek 3's which are outdated and poor in cold and wet according to reviews. The shop did offer to fit them but since they weren't giving me either of my preferred options, I had them supplied loose and will try to trade them for a new rear, if not a pair. My bike is almost identical to yours, although missing the crash bars, which will be a must have a.s.a.p. Mine is fitted with an S P engineering exhaust and sounds throaty when idle/ revving, can't wait to hear it going through the years/ revs. Hopefully I'll be posting videos of my own soon!!

Hi Michael, the Road 5s are amazing. I really like the Pirelli Angel GTs too. I was torn when it came to new tyre time and was swayed by a Richy Vida video raving about the road 5s. Never considered another tyre since and these are my second set.

@@motomogul Thanks for your recommendation, I currently still have the stock Pirrelli Angel ST's, which are not so good as the new GT 2's. My front tyre still has a few thousand miles in it but the rear is squaring off, 3,600 miles on the clock must have been mostly motorway. I might go for a new Angel GT 2 rear, as it may be better balanced to the front, having bought the bike, going through all the tests, bought gear and still needing gear for my wife, son and daughter, all of whom are looking forward to riding pillion. I'm going to have empty pockets for quite a while!! p.s. what sort of milage did you get out of the Road 5's?

Nice video. I absolutely agree on your points about this bike being stunning in looks, fantastic to ride and horribly overlooked by the motorcycling press and sadly Triumph themselves. They have everything you need and are probably the nicest way to tour the continent.

@@majordelays4909 Very happy with it, done just under 6k since ownership, only issue I've had was a leaking nearside front fork seal, which to me seemed a bit premature for a bike with only 5k on the clock when I bought it.

Peter Fallows The horn is a Denali Soundbomb from R&G. It’s not bad but not as loud as I’d like, just not as tinny as the standard horns. You can’t make out the scratches on the video as the quality of camera is not really good enough and then KZbin compress it further which makes it impossible. The outside of the screen was quite badly scratched but the underside was really badly scratched. Looked like the previous owner had cleaned it with wire wool.

I will be adding Givi luggage and removable side rack set up same as you! ( Triumph luggage also not for me!) And will fit radiator mesh and front fender extender. Not sure whether to fit SW motec crash bars that you have, or R&G ones? Any suggestions appreciated, thanks🙂

I have the Givi luggage (keyless) which is great. Radiator grille is a must. This was already fitted to mine when I bought it which is made by Evotech Performance. I didn’t bother with the fender extender but the SW Motech engine bars certainly protected the engine casing when I dropped the bike on my driveway. I also fitted the Oxford Touring heated grips which are brilliant and the Puig (taller) screen which works better than the original. Hope this helps? Sorry for delay in replying to you. 👍

@@motomogul Hi, you mention that you've fitted the Oxford touring grips, I presume wired back to battery? Did you encounter any problems fitting the throttle grip around the ride by wire/cruise set- up, reason I ask its a brand new bike, and didn't click the triumph heated grip option, as OEM tend to be naff🙂

Gray John I remember that the throttle grip was difficult to get on but it can be done without too much bother. They do then just attach to the battery. 👍

I think you’re referring to the ones at the side of the screen, above the headlights? They came with the bike and I presumed they were standard for this model. I would check with your local Triumph dealership if you have the same model bike (2017) and it doesn’t have them, to see if they can be retrofitted. Cheers. Let me know if you get it sorted 👍

I wonder how is the durability (what is the reputation) of these engines, i.e., is it worth buying a used bike with 50k on the clock ..? Is clear it would not resell well but the price is tempting.

The engines are solid. If there is a service history available and you can trust the seller I would buy it for the right price. 👍

I will never understand manufacturers, why they don't make that front mudguard longer? I know, it's for the looks. So are they telling me that all that dirt on the grill looks better than a longer mudguard? Besides the grill restricts the flow of air in slow traffic, if they make the mudguard long then grill is not needed.

What do you think from the mirrors. Are they stable and good vision? Is your camera amount taped on your pannier? The middle standard is an option. I'm waiting for my tiger sport 1050 to collect next week 💃👌🏍️

Hi Kim, you do get a bit of vibe through the mirrors at certain rev ranges but not too bad. Can be very vibey at motorway speed. The camera is stuck on with a GoPro mount. Enjoy your new bike! 👍👍👍

Great review Moto. I had a 2014 model and toured Europe on it. I am now thinking of buying another one although it would be great if they did some minor upgrades. This bike has not really been changed much from they brought out the sport. I just think that if they had led head lights maybe a bit like the tracer 700. If they were able to have the pannier system a bit cleaner and may the new t plane crank as they have in the 900 and if the weight was a bit lower

Darsey no 1 They’ve changed a bit, the ride-by-wire throttle makes for a less snatchy ride. The handling is sharper in the 2016 Tiger and those two things alone make it much improved (in my opinion). I think you can retro-fit LED bulbs, but I agree, standard fit would be better. I’ve got the Givi pannier system which I prefer to the Triumph system. I don’t know much about the T-Plane crank system but I believe it’s designed specifically for the new 900 range. The 1050 was too early for that. They are heavy but the 2016 also carries its weight Much better. Also, I hope it’s not true but, I’ve heard that the 1050 Sport will be phased out soon. Possibly to make more room for more of the retro and adventure models that manufacturers seem to think we are desperate for nowadays. With there only being the Triumph or the Kawasaki 1000, being this only two sports tourers of any note at this marque presently, I think they’re missing a gap in the market there. @@motomogul Due to Euro 5 1050 was stopped in 2019. Then they discover they can still sale somes in 2020. The grey one is back with acid yellow stripings. The mat black is replaced by a shiny black. Two great updates... As Bond, our 1050 only die twice

Just wondering can you stand up on this bike to give your bum a rest on long journeys ? For 5min or so, just curious, really like the bike would make a great tourer, we do a lot of big trips and standing up to rest your backside is important for me anyway

Hi Eddie, yes you can unless you are freakishly tall, then it may be an issue. I did find the seat ok but for long day after long day it does get painful. Maybe a Tourtecs gel seat or inflatable would be enough to change which but if your backside is in contact with the seat?

@@motomogul Haven’t actually got a bike at the moment, & I have a lot of time to kill getting over a total knee replacement operation, so doing my homework now viewing lots of KZbin videos & as you say this bike is good value for money they are around $20k ride away in Australia compared to a GS over $30k. I notice you’ve got Oxford heated grips they are the cheapest & best had them on my last bike generally had them on 40-50% as 75-100% would burn your hands but 100% was good to warm them up fast on a frosty morning cheers Ed
